He's playing bigger venues now than he was in 2018 and he literally subbed before. How is this a real argument?
He just subbed two years ago and he had substantially less people add him to their schedule on the app than acts billed several spots or even lines below him, so he wasn't particularly popular with the crowd that year for some reason.

I think there’s an argument that Sturgill was in the process of peaking this year. He refused to do any press for his album, the album itself was intentionally different, and he is just constantly kicking his label team in the dick every chance he can. Hard to maintain that level of success and be that acerbic, especially in country music.
Sturgill sold out the Gwinnett Arena. STS9 can (or could, IDK now) sell out 3 nights at the Tabernacle too, and they're nowhere near sub-headliner level. It's not the same thing.
is this in response to my comment? STS9 will have people go all three nights or multiple. I was just saying that Tyler moving 7,500 tickets in Atlanta is clearly evidence that he helped Sturgill fill a 13kish arena. I’m on the side of Sturgill being a good pick btw.

That said makes sense as a sub right now
Yeah, I agree that maybe his trajectory is more like the National long term. But a previous sub with a well sold 2020 arena tour would be ridiculous to bump down. It's the same reason why I think your Rosalia placement is totally reasonable. Maybe she's actually a headliner or #2 by the time we have festivals again, but right now there's just nothing to back it up.

He'd be lucky to close a tent and you know it. Nobody cares about Sturgis.

My point isn't that he should be bumped down, my point it that he's not a very good pick, in my opinion, given what I saw about how enthusiastic attendees were when he played in 2018. I do think the Stones are a better HL for him to support than the three 2018 HLs.

I saw Sturgill at a bar less than five years ago. His trajectory since has skyrocketed. I agree that this might be his peak, but it's far too early to start talking about a drop in value. If anything his middle finger to the labels just gave him more clout as an outlaw and that appeals to many country music fans. Album sales and Bonnaroo app numbers don't tell the whole story.

His next 2 albums are supposed to be bluegrass. Sturgill does what he wants. That's one of the reasons so many people love him.
