You have been given the opportunity to curate the initial lineup for a festival in competition with twenty-four eleven others. It's the spooky season and we are feeling nostalgic so any artist that is deceased as of the first pick of the draft is eligible. In addition, any act that has been inactive* since before 01/01/10 is eligible. The act or artist needs to have played at least two live public shows of six or more songs to be eligible. The top twenty twenty-one artists on each lineup will be locked into non-compete clauses preventing them from being on any of these other festival lineups. When the top twenty is complete, you can add up to an additional seventy-five undrafted free agents (UDFA) to your lineup. Winners will be decided by poll in elimination rounds of twenty-five twelve, fifteen, eight, four and two. (Ties move on.) Voting rounds amended via Prop 3.Number of exclusive acts amended via Prop 6/Rule 21.
*An act is considered inactive if they have played no live shows and/or released no new music after 12/31/09. In addition they cannot have newly recorded music pending release and nor upcoming shows scheduled.
See Rules 20 & 21 for additional eligibility changes.
1) Once an artist or member of an act is drafted they are unavailable to anyone else however side-projects and solo artists from that act would still be eligible until separately drafted as long as their typical set contains no more than six songs by a previously drafted performer.
2) A maximum of two superjams are allowed (but not required) without taking up a draft/free agent slot. Any additional superjams will require the use of a slot.
3) Disputes handled via poll. Upon confirming receipt of dispute request, a poll will be put up and run for twelve hours. Polls can run seven days a week but no poll will start before 9AM or after 9PM Eastern. Drafting will continue while the poll is running. If a poll is a tie, the thing being disputed stands.
4) Once we have twenty-five twelve participants, draft order will be randomly generated for the first round and will continue as a snake draft. (I.e., the person with the last pick in the first round would have the first pick in the second round.)
5) In Rounds One through Ten, picks between 9AM and 9PM Eastern will have a maximum of six hours. Any turn that starts between 9PM and 3AM Eastern will expire in twelve hours. Any turn that starts between 3AM and 6AM will expire in nine hours. Any turn that starts between 6AM and 9AM will expire in seven hours.
Beginning in Round Eleven, picks between 9AM and 9PM Eastern will have a maximum of three hours. Any turn that starts between 9PM and 6AM Eastern will expire in six hours. Any turn that starts between 6AM and 9AM will expire at Noon.
6) If a participant's time expires, their turn is skipped and the participant can then select from any remaining acts at the time that they register their pick. If a participant is still on the clock from a previous turn because their time expired without making a selection, then when their next turn comes around the wait for their turn is waived. A participant can make up a maximum of two picks - if they fall behind by more than two picks the additional picks are forfeit.
7) When you post your selection, identify who the pick is. (Do not assume that everybody else can recognize your pick from pic or gif - formatting issues sometimes make them unreadable.) In addition, tag the next person after you and the person going after them to keep things moving.
8) Trades are allowed. All participants must verify the terms of the trade. (Note: Trades are subject to dispute. In the event that a trade is believed to be unrealistically lopsided, a participant can call for a poll on the validity of said trade.)
9) Up to seventy-five undrafted free agents can be selected in the ninety-six hours after the last draft selection. Following that, participants will then have their UDFA presented individually, allowing time to highlight acts and for other participants to verify that no previously drafted acts were included as another's UDFA.
10) Any rule changes prior to the start of the draft will be decided by me and updated in the OP.
11) Any rule changes after the start of the draft will require fifteen eight participant votes in favor prior to adoption. Amended via Prop 2
12) A rule change cannot be instituted to change the process of changing rules or disputes. (E.g., no vote to assign a "ref.")
13) If an artist performs both solo and with a set band, then when one is drafted all iterations are off the table. For example, if an artist like Prince is drafted then Prince and the Revolution is off the table. However if an artist like Neil Young is drafted then Neil Young & Crazy Horse would off the table but not Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
14) If an act has multiple lineup configurations, the one drafted should be identified when drafted. Other configurations would then be off the table. For example, if you were selecting Van Halen then you verified that you were choosing the iteration with Gary Cherone, the David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar VH's would be off the table.
15) In the event that a participant is unable or unwilling to complete the draft, a Supplemental Round will be established. All of that participant's selected artists would be available for selection in this round. The order would be random and would be established after completion of round twenty or whichever round follows the departure of the drafter, whichever is later. Only one supplemental round will occur regardless of the number of acts available. If fewer than twenty-five supplemental acts become available or if a drafter does not want to select a supplemental act then they may select any other available act.
16) If a drafter appears to be acting to the detriment of the draft, participants are able to request that drafter's removal. Removal will require twenty ten votes in favor. Only participants may vote and the votes are public. That participant's drafted artists would be moved to a supplemental round. Amended via Prop Four.
17) If a drafter may not be able to make their pick, they may select a proxy or proxies to select on their behalf. Proxies must be stated in thread.
18) If an artist dies after the first selection is made but before the last selection is made, he or she is eligible to all participants as a free agent. If they are affiliated with a band, however, that does not make that band eligible since the deceased member may conceivably be replaced. (Exception: if the act is billed as XXX and the YYY's, if XXX dies it is reasonable to assume that that XXX and the YYY's will no longer tour or record new music under that moniker.) If the artist dies after the final selection of the draft but before free agency then they are not eligible.
19) In the event that a team takes an act who has been accused of any sort of assault, harassment, violence, etc. (or if this happens mid-draft) and the drafting team did not know this, they may drop that act, however can only replace them in UDFAs.
20) An act that has released music or toured in the 2010s is eligible if an essential member of the band has died. Essential must mean a member so vital to the group that it is seen as extremely unlikely that the group will ever perform or release new music (without the deceased member) again or if the band has stated that they won’t perform again without the deceased member. Any disputes will be handled via poll or the agreement to drop the act from whoever picked the act. Examples of essential members: Neil Peart, MCA, the Allman Brothers. Added via Prop 5.
21) Add an extra two rounds (rounds 21 & 22) has been added to allow selection of an act or artist who had never played live before. Artists or acts are deemed eligible for this round if they have released at least one studio album under their name and have never played a live show before. This round will have a different draft order determined by random.org. Added via Prop 6.Amended to add an additional round with these same rules via Prop 7.

Im in. Think 75 FAs is a little high but this will be very fun
It was originally 25/75 but Fred talked me into 20/75. That opened up an extra 125 free agents. Also, you don't have to use all of your spots. I think it'll be fine. Think of how many dead composers there are for people to draft!

25 people seems like too many. I agree with whoever said fewer drafters makes more sense.
Also, question on eligibility - what about acts that lost original members, yet reformed and kept playing? Like, obviously the Who still play shows, but would the Who (with Keith Moon and John Entwhistle) be eligible? Same with Queen w/ Freddie Mercury, etc.

If they carry on under the same name, even if it's a bastardization of the original act, they are considered a continuity of the original act. So The Who would be out. Queen now performs as Queen + Adam Lambert so the original Queen would be eligible.
As far as the number of participants, interest seems low so I might cap it at 20 but I think that we're underestimating the number of dead people and inactive acts that there are in music history. Maybe I'm wrong and we'll have to update on the fly.

the way I'm reading rule 18, it seems like The Who would be out for sure, but isn't Queen usually booked as "Queen and Adam Lambert"? Or have they had any shows as just Queen in the last ten years?
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
