I guess I should replace "ruled out" with "made extremely unlikely by current tour dates", does that satisfy?
They’re very different, given that the second is more an interpretation. Especially now that we know Lucy is on the lineup. I’m guessing we may see Bright Eyes/Conor pop up in some capacity as well. It’s probably not a huge coincidence that he planned a New England tour to start Newport week now two years in a row.
well his tour starts in buffalo, but yeah
also his 2020 New England tour dates were in June, not July, but my understanding is that bright eyes was booked for Newport last year
and i kind of feel like when they have these supergroups play, they don't usually book the members for individual sets - like maybe i'm wrong, but in 2019 the Highwomen didn't play individually, right?

I think you’re right there and I agree with that. It’s probably asking a lot of an artist to play multiple sets, especially on the same day, for two different bands (when they have a contributing role in each). I’d imagine it would be just as hard for an artist like Conor to prep for a one off like MOF while also prepping for a tour - in this case his first Bright Eyes tour in over a year.

If you combine weekend and weekday lineups into a single festival lineup, this is shaping up to be one of the best Newport Folk Fest lineups.
Half of last year’s stellar lineup is already announced to be returning. And then you add in acts like Middle Brother, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker, two of which put out two of the best albums this year and the other celebrating a 10 year anniversary. Throw on an artist like Billy Strings, whose popularity is soaring right now.
We’ll probably end up a little weaker in the top tiers than in a normal year (although, these could also be the acts that are holding onto their announcements. If rumors or possibles like Bright Eyes, Stapleton, and Highwomen come true, that may not be the case.) This year’s lineup may also end up a little solo artist heavy as well, but Newport has been trending in that direction for years.

starting to feel like they took last year's 4-stage/3-day lineup, split it into a 2-stage/6-day lineup with a handful of substitutions, honestly
like, they had already allocated the money to those acts, so it's the easiest way to bring them back in some form

Hope you’re right because I could use some
Big thief Sylvan esso Delta spirit Sharon Van Etten Brittany howard Ian noe
Yes to this. I’ll even take Sylvan Esso as a headliner; dancing the end of the day away as the sun begins to set. I’m hoping they’re on the lineup (weekday) and just haven’t announced because they have two dates in Boston on their announced tour.

That makes sense, I’m going to just treat this theory as fact now because I want it to be true
Dawes made a comment about catching (I think) Randy Newman. Seems Taylor might be around for most of event. I’m thinking this may be a weekend act.
Initially I was just going to go on the weekend but this be is my first time and who knows if I’ll make it again so I just decided to say fuck it and not miss a minute and do the whole week. It’s been fun to be able to be pumped for any act announced or speculated

This "Festival Circuit" podcast that'll have multiple episodes about Newport Folk Festival this year is seriously excellent. I saw it on NFF and Jay's instagram stories and just listened to the first episode. The guests interviewed that I can remember: Jay Sweet, George Wein, Jim James, John McCauley, Brittany Howard, Jess & Holly (Lucius), Judy Collins, Phil and Brad Cook, and some staff member(s?)...
One thing that stood out: they mentioned the Deer Tick aftershows and McCauley sort of worded their status as having been forced to take the year off last year. Considering last year was supposed to be the last year - that type of wording gives the impression that they will start back up again. The host said there would be more to come regarding aftershows on a future episode. I'm about to start the second episode now but seriously, what a great listen. I recommend it!
EDIT: Oh yeah, Chris Funk and Colin Meloy were interviewed as well. Both episodes featured an ad for Black Pumas debut album (wonder if there's any meaning behind that)... and the previous season about New Orleans had 5 episodes so I'm hoping there's at least a few more to go.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

I’ll tell ya what. Hearing them talk about MegaFaun and MoF, is not helping with toning down my expectations. Haha!
J: I know a tradition after the Folk Fest was always your after parties at the Blues Cafe, but you said you were discontinuing that. Is that still the case?
John: Our plan was to do the final ones last summer, but of course, the Fest didn’t happen, and this summer, everything came together in the last minute for Folk Fest. We weren’t really sure it was happening, or if we’d be playing. We were getting so many mixed signals that we decided to hold off on doing the after parties this year, and wait until next year when everything is 100 percent back to normal so we can really go out with a bang. Unfortunately, things on our end came together too late to do the after parties this year.

Megafaun would fit in reallll nice on the weekday fest. I feel like I remember them teasing a reunion a little while back
