Jay’s Folk On playlist features Bleachers and Phosphorescent so I assume we can count them in.
Jack Antonoff being at the fort will fuel more Taylor Swift rumors 😂
Jason Isbell and Jack Antonoff’s Bleachers cover each other on a new split seven-inch single for charity out Wednesday, July 7th via RCA Records.
The single will feature Isbell covering Bleachers’ “45,” which will appear on the latter band’s upcoming album, Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night. And Bleachers will cover Isbell’s “Dreamsicle,” a track off his 2020 album, Reunion.

I’m sure Bleachers will be on the weekend with my luck (and to overlap with Jason), but would love for Bleachers to play one of the weekday sets. I’ve been a fan of Jack’s projects back to Steel Train (who are actually really folky and would be a good fit).
Was Amanda Shires ever on the official list of artists? Because she took down her IG post about playing and she’s not listed.
I don’t believe she was ever on the folk site.
My guess is she’ll be playing as part of The Highwomen. So they didn’t quite know how to handle that as an announcement. Something similar probably for Emma Swift who has been announced (and I believe shared by Newport on social) but is not on the website. Maybe she’s part of a Bob Dylan collaboration covers set? Or playing a set with her partner?
On a separate note, Jay Sweet also has a Natalie Bergman track on his Folk On playlist. It’s the song that was remixed by Beck, so it features Beck as well, but it’s not a Beck song. So maybe Natalie as well?

Then we should say the same about Bedouine too then

You’re right. And I was incorrect. That’s not the Beck remix of one of her songs. That’s a cover they both did together. She’d still be a welcome addition to Newport though! Just realized she is Third Man Records artist and there’s usually a good relationship between Third Man and Newport.

As much as I enjoy Bleachers, at first I thought it was a bit of a stretch. Although, maybe no more than Portugal the Man. But when I relistened to their two newest singles off their upcoming album that comes out the Friday after Newport Folk On- that new sound is perfect for Newport Folk. I am so excited by this possibility. Please please ::fingerscrossed::
My current (maybe final?) prediction for “headliners” for Newport Folk On.
Friday - Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats Saturday - Chris Stapleton (Solo) Sunday - The Highwomen Monday - Bright Eyes Tuesday - Beck Wednesday - Deer Tick
Obviously, days are a bit of a guess. Bright Eyes on Monday might be pushing it with a Buffalo date on Tuesday. And I can’t imagine that we won’t get a collaboration set to end a day this year, so we could factor at least one of those for each Folk On.

Yeah, was going to say that at least one or two of these "headliner" sets will likely be a collaboration or at least an "and friends" type of set.
Like...for Deer Tick...I could see the plan being (last year) to have them headline but ALSO have all their NFF friends and family come out throughout. Sort of like a Last Waltz set but for Deer Tick at NFF.
They've really leaned into those themed collaboration sets for a few years now so I expect more of that. But who knows? With things being so different this year maybe it's just acts and other special sets.

I’m gonna be very surprised (and disappointed) if we don’t get a John prine tribute

Even if there's not a full tribute set I almost guarantee we'll see many artists playing a cover of his tunes. Sort of like when many played tribute to the Frightened Rabbit artists who passed a few years ago.

Is Rateliff big enough? This would be perfect otherwise, though I don’t think Bright Eyes plays Monday.

I think he’s/they’re big enough for this year, especially as a counter booking to Deer Tick as a headliner. Outside of Newport, they’re bigger than Deer Tick. Within Newport, they seem to be well liked in the community. And I’d imagine it’d be a set where a bunch of friends join in.
Right now there appear to be 11 acts already booked and announced for Friday. Two of the acts are on the Nathaniel Rateliff tour. There are enough blues rock acts to fill an entire stage. But none announced so far seem big enough to headline.

I’m sure I’m in the minority on this, but if I was going on Saturday, I would want Randy to be the headliner. In my mind, Randy and John Prine are on a similar level, Sail Away and Good Old Boys could sit side by side with Prines debut as front to back classics. It would be great to see Randy get the 2017 Prine treatment with special guests, though I’m not sure if he is as open to collabs as John was.

Randy is one of those guys that people can get all excited about how he played Newport. But let’s be honest, I don’t think many of us are buying tickets to a Randy show. That’s why likely not headliner.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he was a headliner. But I also don’t think that he is the headliner. To be fair and in reply to the last comment, there are a lot of Newport headliners I probably wouldn’t have paid to see until they blew me away at Newport: John Prine, Mavis Staples, etc.
I know I guessed Chris Stapleton for Saturday, but now that I think about it, Stapleton, Isbell, and Randy Newman is pretty damn loaded for a single day. That said, maybe needed for the weekenders who have been complaining that weekday is better to eat their words.

Totally agree with this. I wouldn’t have gone to a Prine or Mavis concert, but I loved getting to see them at Newport. I would put Bonnie Raitt in a similar category too and I gotta think she comes back to Newport sometime soon. She’s been known to sing the hell out of some Randy and Prine.
