I've never once stepped in to the beer garden or the beer pier. It feels like that's gonna change this year.
I’ve never been but man that’s such a bummer that you can’t be in the crowd In a show with a beer
Yeah the "beer garden" thing is really annoying. I've never been to Folk, but honestly roped off beer areas is part of the reason. Always hated festivals like that. Let adults be adults and just kick them out if they're being stupid. What the hell am i supposed to do with my hands at a show if i'm not holding a beer?

There’s a ton of stuff drunk people can do to be annoying AF that’s a far cry from being worthy of kicking them out.
Hooting and hollering by them while Prine and Rateliff did Sam Stone a few years ago is a prime example.

People who are trying to get blackout at the show are still going to for the most part, they're just going to drink a ton in the beer garden all at once and then walk around. I guess maybe you prevent a small portion of it, but I don't buy that it would make a difference. Also, plenty of people just want to enjoy a couple beers casually and would like to do so while in the crowd. Wanting to walk the grounds with a beer doesn't mean you want to get absolutely wasted.
From what i can tell, beer gardens are mainly used to prevent underage drinking (bringing beers into the crowd and selling them to kids, etc) and I imagine that in this case the city or state mandates it because it's a state park and not private land.

I mean how does NFF not consider this kick out worthy. Lock em up. That’s a damn shame
Not that we doubted this, but Nathaniel Rateliff was added to Jay’s Folk On playlist.
I wonder if Brandi Carlisle might make it this year.
Pretty confident that they said they were going to be at the fort during one of their campfire live streams. Don’t think they have any dates though but I’m sure it will be some window that allows for a highwomen set

Weekend countryfest and weekday indiefest is just about the stupidest thing I could conceive happening and it seems to absolutely be happening.
i mean i could be wrong but it seems like the country-ish stuff that plays at NFF tends to draw the biggest crowds these days
I haven't noticed that much of a difference in crowd size from one artist to another over the years. The only ones that really stand out are Patti Smith's tiny crowd and Hozier's enormous crowd.

This. They’ve pivoted to more soul-ish and country-ish music in recent years and cut back on the indie folk that dominated the start of the 2010s. And I think it’s helped the festival thrive as tastes change. Brandi, Margo, and Jason are now synonymous with the festival (more so now than Jim James and Colin Meloy). Soul is back in popular demand (see Silk Sonic and Leon Bridges) and Newport was highlighting it first. Jason Isbell is now headlining small music festivals across the country.

normally i care about maybe 4-6 acts total that appear at any given NFF
so i'm confused watching everyone get mad about the same acts they're normally so excited for
I think every day has a spatter of the acts we’d expect when we bought tickets blindly to a Newport revival type event. Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlile, Caamp, Margo Price, Hiss, Nathaniel Rateliff, etc. I really don’t think it’s going to be the case that one day ends up better than others in terms of the acts booked. But of course preferences will end up dictating if someone would have preferred to go on a different day.
And as a weekday attendee, I’m super jealous weekend getaway Caamp, Lucy, Randy Newman, Jason Isbell, Andrew Bird, and Margo Price. Not to mention a handful of other bookings. There was always going to be FOMO.

yeah as of right now, there's about the same number of acts I'd be excited for on the weekend as there are acts I'd be excited for during the week.

Somehow that doesn't surprise me based on the way you typically talk on here. Normally I care about 10-20 acts each year.
My fiance and I were bringing two friends in 2020 for their first festival. Like us, they prefer indie-folk (Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Deer Tick, Big Thief, Pinegrove, etc). Last year's lineup had a ton a of great artists we wanted to see (Deer Tick, RKS, SVE, Big Thief, Waxahatchee, The National, Sylvan Esso, Phoebe Bridgers, potentially Bright Eyes, etc). The festival was canceled and Jay insisted that all artists were invited back for 2021.
My fiance and I persuaded this other couple to double-down and roll the tickets to next year as the big names we wanted to see would likely be returning. This is a pretty big ask for people who have never attended the festival. Then the festival basically pulled a bait and switch and added 3 more days seemingly moving all of the indie artists to the days we are not attending.
There are currently eleven artists that have been announced that I would go out of my way to see (Deer Tick, Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby, Beck, Sharon Van Etten, Middle Brother, Bonny Light Horseman, Fruit Bats, Hiss Golden Messenger, Langhorne Slim, and now Ben Gibbard). Nine out of the eleven are M-W and the other two haven't announced yet which days they're playing. I like Tre Burt, Caamp, and Randy Newman but if we're being honest, I wouldn't go out of my way to see any of them.
I get that it's the luck of the draw. I get that they're trying to provide opportunities for collaboration. It just feels like a bait and switch and I feel terrible for the other couple who were expecting to see artists that they know and like. We've already paid for our airbnb so rolling over/selling on lyte at this point would just be a waste of time and money for one couple who has a wedding this year and another who just purchased a house.
