Yeah, I feel really lucky I went with the weekday. Randy, Bird and Lucy are the only ones so far I’m sad to miss. Where I’m looking forward to pretty much the whole weekday lineup. I’ll be curious where Morby/Wax fall, they would fit in really well with the weekday crew, but they have opened for Isbell too so who knows.

i get the feeling that anyone who hasn't announced a date yet, and has the field open, will be playing both events

normally i care about maybe 4-6 acts total that appear at any given NFF
so i'm confused watching everyone get mad about the same acts they're normally so excited for
Somehow that doesn't surprise me based on the way you typically talk on here. Normally I care about 10-20 acts each year.
My fiance and I were bringing two friends in 2020 for their first festival. Like us, they prefer indie-folk (Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Deer Tick, Big Thief, Pinegrove, etc). Last year's lineup had a ton a of great artists we wanted to see (Deer Tick, RKS, SVE, Big Thief, Waxahatchee, The National, Sylvan Esso, Phoebe Bridgers, potentially Bright Eyes, etc). The festival was canceled and Jay insisted that all artists were invited back for 2021.
My fiance and I persuaded this other couple to double-down and roll the tickets to next year as the big names we wanted to see would likely be returning. This is a pretty big ask for people who have never attended the festival. Then the festival basically pulled a bait and switch and added 3 more days seemingly moving all of the indie artists to the days we are not attending.
There are currently eleven artists that have been announced that I would go out of my way to see (Deer Tick, Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby, Beck, Sharon Van Etten, Middle Brother, Bonny Light Horseman, Fruit Bats, Hiss Golden Messenger, Langhorne Slim, and now Ben Gibbard). Nine out of the eleven are M-W and the other two haven't announced yet which days they're playing. I like Tre Burt, Caamp, and Randy Newman but if we're being honest, I wouldn't go out of my way to see any of them.
I get that it's the luck of the draw. I get that they're trying to provide opportunities for collaboration. It just feels like a bait and switch and I feel terrible for the other couple who were expecting to see artists that they know and like. We've already paid for our airbnb so rolling over/selling on lyte at this point would just be a waste of time and money for one couple who has a wedding this year and another who just purchased a house.
Honestly I think the Weekday announcements are orchestrated to move Lyte tickets. I really think weekend is sand bagging and I also think there is a ton in store that won’t be announced before hand. It’s your business, but if you end up not going I expect you’ll be bummed on missing out on what actually goes down on the weekend
Because that makes 12 acts “currently scheduled” for Friday. Now to be fair, Celisse, Early James, Ida Mae, Jonathan Russell, and Joy Oladokun are unofficial for Friday, but they’ve listed it at some point. Which means they could just be listing the first day of the festival.

I’m gonna guess they push it a little. Jay seem to imply that there was a lot of interest to play this year. I’m wondering they make it a little tighter on the schedule to squeeze more in. Maybe we get 14 a day
Has anyone on here ever had an unenjoyable day at NFF? Trying to understand the roots of doubt. This is going to be an epic, for the history books year of amazing, once in a lifetime performances. I can't imagine a scenario that would let anyone down who loves live music and especially one who cares enough to frequent a message board all about the event. I am probably one of the "sunshine and roses people that are a little much" mentioned earlier but I think everyone should drop the angst. Come back later and complain if in fact you were let down. For now, let's just get amped for the incredible days ahead?

It does seem like it’ll be a lot less full bands than usual, so there could be quicker turnarounds between sets.

That was my thought. I think we’ll see a lot of solo acoustic sets this year.

Instead of comparing weekend to weekday, my only disappointment is the amount of solo sets. I completely understand why and this is not meant as a complaint (I expected this to be the case when I bought tickets), but seeing festivals like Lollapalooza only a week later with normal performances, makes me envious. For instance, even Hiss is billed as solo, but his backing band are Newport staples as well. While I may choose Hiss > Caamp, I’d take Caamp (unplugged) > Hiss (solo) because I trust that Caamp could deliver energy and stand out whereas MC Taylor might be the fifth singer songwriter I see in a row on his day.

I get that, I for one am a sucker for solo sets and am taking at as a unique opportunity to catch a lot of solo sets. For instance I think Isbell is at his best stripped down, rather than with the 400 unit. I also think the chance to see him solo is few and far between. Also I think Sharon Van Etten solo is going to be really special

I wonder if there's going to be any sort of a schedule by the day of the fest. I'd like to at least know some set times instead of running back and forth every time I hear who is coming out on the other stage
Sam Adams as the official beer of Newport this year? Boo. Would have been really cool if they could have teamed up with some of the microbreweries that I can only imagine were hurt over the pandemic.

Didn’t even realize Hiss was a solo set, thanks for the heads up! I got tickets to see the full band in the fall, so that’s actually a plus for me.

Yeah solo Isbell is more attractive to me than 400 unit. SVE is gonna be great. I’m also pumped for lots of solo sets. But full band Fruit Bats will be a treat.
Elijah Wolf @elijahwolfmusi a dream come true to announce I’ve been invited to this years @newportfolkfest for a solo pop up set (& some other fun surprises) 😭💛 thank you @ajsfour & co for welcoming me into the newport family, an incredible honor!
Fully expect a Phil Leah & Friends show during the weekend with him opening the Brooklyn Bowl Nashville during the week. Playing with Dawes, Nicki Bluhm and his son. Hopefully Sunday with Billy being there.

I'd be kind of surprised if they have him headline two years in a row.
Looks like usual Quad tent being built where Fort stage usually is and a long tent being built down middle of Quad area.
No chance that the one being built outside the fort ends up being the food tent?
I’m a little bummed we went from an announcement re: no tented stages to now two tented stages. I get that tents can help with intimacy, especially when most of the acts will be performing solo sets. But they destroy sight lines, light contrast makes it harder to see (and take photos) unless you’re under the tent, and will likely push people into more confined spaces just to be able to get a better view of the stage.
It might be one thing if we’re talking 4,000 capacity, but 6,000 capacity is still a lot of people when it’s 10,000 in a normal year.

That tent is basically where the map says the lawn stage is.
