No chance that the one being built outside the fort ends up being the food tent?
I’m a little bummed we went from an announcement re: no tented stages to now two tented stages. I get that tents can help with intimacy, especially when most of the acts will be performing solo sets. But they destroy sight lines, light contrast makes it harder to see (and take photos) unless you’re under the tent, and will likely push people into more confined spaces just to be able to get a better view of the stage.
It might be one thing if we’re talking 4,000 capacity, but 6,000 capacity is still a lot of people when it’s 10,000 in a normal year.
That tent is basically where the map says the lawn stage is.
Actually I think that stage in quad is the food tent for musicians and workers that usually goes up behind the Quad. But definitely quad like stage where Fort stage usually is. Wonder if they reversed the stages. Quad in fort and fort stage in quad. That'd be cool with smaller crowd. Also. The Friday is now available on a 10 day forecast for Newport. Right now seeing Sun 76F and a little cloud.

Waxahatchee's website says Friday! She plays that night at MassMOCA so I don't fully trust it yet but I guess an early set and then leaving for MassMOCA is possible?
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

more likely whoever runs her website is just using 7/23 as a placeholder since it's the start of the whole thing - Mass MoCA is like 3.5 hours away from Newport, so for her to make a 7:00 p.m. show there, she'd need to leave Newport by 2:00 p.m., and she's a big enough deal where she'd get a better timeslot than like 12:30 or whatever
take it for what it's worth, but i heard the Avetts were headlining Sunday
If they're straight up headlining that's a letdown. I like them a lot but they headlined in 2013 and 2017... saw them both times. If they did an Avett Brothers set that led into a collaborative Prine tribute set with Avett's as the backing band, I would be all for it.

to be fair what I heard was that the Avetts "would be there", i just assumed they'd headline because they're not playing in the mid afternoon or anything. could be something as simple as a guest appearance.

It seems strange to call a headlining caliber act that has previously headlined Newport a letdown. The fact that Newport was able to get acts like Beck and Avett Brothers to play to a reduced capacity crowd of 6,000 people is impressive. Were we expecting acts that have no attachment to Newport to take a pay cut to play Newport for their first time this year? Even in a regular year we expect a few repeat headlining performances/bookings.
That said, I completely get if they’re not your cup of tea or if you’ve recently seen them and would prefer someone else. But letdown seems pretty strong for a festival punching way above its weight right now.

I literally said I like them a lot so I don't know where the not my cup of tea thing came from. Sunday will be the last day of the festival for a large portion of the audience. The Sunday headlining set over the last few years has become a cathartic, collaborative experience (the John Prine set, A Change Is Gonna Come, I've Got a Song, etc). If the Avett's were headlining any day other than Sunday or Wednesday it would make more sense to me... although if they were preheadliner in 2017 I don't know what they've done to earn headliner status in 2021.
This is why I said, if it's an Avett set followed by a Prine tribute set, I would be all for it. Sunday and Wednesday should end with collaborative sets. It's the spirit of the festival.

^^^ this. I could 100% see an Avett set followed by a Prine tribute.

My apologies. I missed your original sentiment. After the amount of weekend complaints, I read it as if it was another one, in that even an Avett Brothers headlining set would be a letdown for weekenders. I do understand the interest in wanting a unique collaboration set to end the festival, although it’s my impression that one wasn’t scheduled for last year and that the National were expected to close things out.
Nope - those must be assumptions. They were never announced.
I’m definitely hoping for Jim and Delta. They make sense but I’m trying to not count my chickens before they hatch.
Yep, I dropped in a few artist assumptions for very likely guests not yet announced. But it doesn't go too far out there - nobody was included that either hasn't leaked a tip or isn't Folk Family that we know wouldn't miss this year for the world and the chance to step up for Jay. Don't think of it as counting chickens more as Deer Tick says - Hope is Big.
Did I miss out on the delta spirit, Jim James, shovels and rope, and Sierra Ferrell announcements?
Sierra Ferrell confirmed for 7/28. Her email referred to it as a pop-up set
Apparently Robyn Hitchcock confirmed that he’ll be backing Emma Swift on guitar and they’ll be playing “smaller acoustic stages”. So apparently these pop up sets are getting pretty well organized. I’m guessing the busking tent for both? But I guess the Lawn Stage might be a “smaller acoustic stage” this year?

Based on the map that was temporarily released, the busking stage and lawn stage are in same area. My guess is that the latter will be for larger "full band" setups and the former will be for more scaled down performances, including emerging artists (e.g. Emma Swift, Elijah Wolf) -- sort of a mix between the museum and harbor stages in terms of function......and that they will be alternating these two stages throughout the day (i.e. busking performances during lawn stage set changes)......from a logistics and efficiency standpoint, that would make the most sense....if this is the case, it would effectively mean nonstop music in that area throughout the day....

I agree with this thought. Makes the most sense.
But, there are so many “solo” performances booked for this year, that one of the two main stages could also be used for solo/acoustic performances. I don’t see a single day yet with more than 5 acts booked that are necessarily full band/plugged in sets.

True that the lineup is solo artist heavy.....and many can be expected to be lower key acoustic happenings (e.g. Isbell, Morby/Waxahatchee, Dimmer Twins).....but there are plenty that beckon for a more full band treatment ((e.g. Yola, Beck, Billy Strings, Marcus King).....I don't necessarily see a shortage of plugged in sets, even for those billed as solo acts who might not be coming with a band -- I could envision there being some kind of "house band" arrangement (via Phil & Brad Cook?) as part of the picture.......

Agree. Although Phil and Brad aren’t even listed to be there with Hiss. Fingers crossed.

For a minute I thought we might get Tycho since he’s playing Brooklyn on 7/23 and just released a new single with Ben Gibbard, but I missed that he’s playing Red Rocks 7/24 so alas.

I love some Tycho. I’d be down to see Newport book more folktronica (at least one artist each year). I know they’ve booked Beth Orton and came close last year with Sylvan Esso. Maybe some Tunng and/or Lump. I’d really dig a Bibio set as well. And I’m sure there’s a bunch I’m forgetting or haven’t discovered yet.
Edit: I guess Maggie Rogers could fall into this category as well.
