Jason Isbell and Nathaniel Rateliff each get about 2,000,000 spotify listens per month.
Middle Brother gets about 100,000.
Middle Brother is Newport Folk royalty!! Plus very rare to see them play together. Not saying they are def going to headline but they are much closer to those other bands in regard to love from NFF fans than Spotify stats would imply.

I wonder if the busking stage artists will be announced like the Family Tent usually is with app notifications? Not tryna miss Sierra Ferrell on Wednesday
right, but DCFC isn't playing - Ben Gibbard is. he subbed for Regina Spektor on the Quad in 2017.
and the Allison Russell set is one of the traditional collab closing sets - so it's not exactly the same
2021 is a different year. Other than Beck, it seems like we are maxing out at what could be the 3rd biggest act in a normal year.
Didn’t you argue a few pages back that Rateliff wasn’t big enough to headline?
I didn't argue that he wasn't, just asked if he was. Looked him up after that and was stunned to see he gets as many streams as Isbell does, who always just seemed a lot bigger/more popular to me.
Rateliff/Isbell are small-ish headliners for NFF - I'd argue on a typical year they'd be subheadlining. But they're not taking a guy who didn't even close the second stage 4 years ago and making him the headliner. (Also Gibbard and Middle Brother can't both headline since they play the same day.)
Anyway I'm gonna guess Brandi for Monday, Beck Tuesday, and then some sort of collab thing for Wednesday. Middle Brother plays quad, Ben Gibbard either closes the quad or plays mid-to-late afternoon on the lawn.

My fingers are crossed your prediction comes true. I am a little surprised nothing bigger than what we already pretty much knew was announced for the weekend, so I’m trying not to get my hopes up.
I’ll add real quick that Isbell solo only gets 600,000 monthly streams on Spotify -> more comparable to Ben Gibbard solo (if we’re not giving them credit for other projects).
I’m guessing Brandi ends up being a pretty big part of Allison Russell’s set on Sunday evening.
But yes, it would be a little strange if both Middle Brother and Deer Tick headlined. So there’s gotta be something else there, even if they’re both loved by the community.
Still hoping that Bleachers sneaks onto the weekday lineup. I’d love for Sylvan Esso and/or Phoebe Bridgers to be there as well, but I’m no longer hopeful after seeing the weekend schedule (same with Japanese Breakfast as she treks to play with Bright Eyes). Brandi and/or Jeff Tweedy would make sense in some capacity.

Having seen the Night Sweats 3 or 4 times and Rateliff solo once back in 2012... I've gotta say I prefer his solo performance. However, I didn't get much out of his recent solo album so hopefully he would play some of his old solo stuff during the second set because that stuff is outstanding.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Agree with this, but weekday collab set seems to make more sense for Monday when you can leverage artists from other days (and the weekend event) who may still be in town.

Seeing this listed out now - the weekday lineup doesn't look that much better than the weekend.
If they swapped one of the Margo sets for one of the Eric Johnson sets and swapped one of the Rateliff sets for one of the McCauley sets both lineups would have been a lot more diverse... oh well.

I think Thile, LSD, Gibbard are all lawn, and I think Billy, Middle Brother, and Julien Baker are quad.

I think Monday is right on the money, unless Billy and Fruit Bats swap places. Though that would be the same time slot Billy has on Sunday. I also think the Monday headliner hasn't been announced.
I was thinking Langhorne would close the Quad against Beck, but maybe it's somebody unannounced.
Monday and Tuesday look awesome to me. Wednesday is a little weaker, but I'm definitely looking forward to Julien and Deer Tick.

Does seem on target......although I would expect Deer Tick (& Friends) to close out Folk On 2021 w/ finale of Goodnight Irene.

By no means do I intend to be negative as I know the weekend crew has voiced feeling let down, but man, not one, but 2 headlining NR shows is offensive

I’m gonna guess the Sunday set is possibly the prine tribute but still, lead by rateliff is not my personal cup of tea. I’m sure the weekend will be incredible, just with jay saying they had more people ask to play than spots available, I did not think Rateliff was gonna headline twice

they really arent.
Disagree. I literally bought a weekday pass solely based on them.

So, what I’m most confused about is a couple things.
1. Newport said that they were inviting back all of 2020 lineup for 2021. So does that mean a bunch said nah? Because so far there are a lot of missing from 2020.
2. I thought they also said that they have a abundance of people asking to play this year. However, they booked 2 Margo sets, 2 Nathaniel sets and 2 Strings sets so far.

I’m actually thinking that Isbell set turns into a Prine set. I think that’s more likely. If it even happens.

That’s a fair point I’m just trying to wrap my around why 2 Rateliff sets makes sense lol

If Billy Strings’ Monday set is a guest heavy bluegrass collab set, maybe that could be headliner worthy. I know he has gotten really popular in the past year or so.
Disagree. I literally bought a weekday pass solely based on them.
Correlation does not equal causation.
What I mean by that is that the kind of people who spend their free time posting on a message board about NFF may or may not be incredibly hyped about a Middle Brother reunion, but that doesn’t automatically translate to them having enough mainstream popularity to headline.

1. That’s exactly what it means.
2. He was either lying or the people asking to play sucked or they asked to play but couldn’t make a specific date/time

My wife and I usually take the water shuttle but we will be parking at the fort this year. Does anyone have any tips for me? I'm hoping the reduced capacity eases some of the congestion leaving.

With the lower capacity should be super easy. However, I don’t think the lots are ever that difficult to get out of.

Possible that the Highwomen were booked for Sunday but Maren and/or Amanda couldn’t make it? So Newport did the easiest thing and recycled a popular act.
I assume acts probably came and went behind the scenes over the last few months. Probably partially why Newport didn’t want to announce anything. Some of these double sets could be filler for a canceled act (Although, it would make more sense to give someone like Langehorne a second set at the other event than an act already booked for that event.)
Any guesses on the Allison Russell set? Mavis will almost definitely be involved, any other guesses?
Also, side note: If anyone has/knows of a hotel or airbnb that they aren't using anymore, please let me know- thanks!
I’d bet on Brandi being part of it. I believe Allison was part of the original What’s Going On set (so will probably reprise her role at Newport), so maybe Devon will pop out as well.
Newport keeps promising surprises. I’m just surprised because there is less room on the schedule than I would have thought for surprises. I’m even surprised there isn’t one set that’s TBA and that it doesn’t appear that a single weekend act was bound from announcing early due to some touring or exclusivity constraints.
