Emma Swift is pretty pissed about getting bumped from the busking stage for MB and rightly so.
We walked past her, Robyn, and a guy that seemed to be their manager outside of the busking tent while MB was setting up and you could hear how upset she was. Everything we witnessed is in line with what she’s claiming.
Oof not good. Hope the fest can find a way to make up for it but that sounds shitty for sure.

They moved her to main stage. But yes, I agree. I’m glad she spoke up. I hope someone figures it out and gives an appropriate apology.

If they don’t then that might be a wild start to Tuesday if she’s feeling motivated to speak up while on the main stage!
The worst part about it is that there is plenty of space for acts to play. Middle Brother could have played somewhere else in the fort. I remember when Caamp had a busking set in the Quad.
Thoughts on what we caught today: Tre Burt - Good but not energetic enough to start the day off so we wandered after a few songs Dimmer Twins - Sounded fantastic and loved the set list they put together. The entire stage crew blatantly disregarding it and scrolling in their phones the entire set certainly put a blemish on the scene Gentle Times w/ Erin Rae - THIS IS NEWPORT FOLK FEST! I may be biased because I just absolutely love her voice, but this was a fantastic set with a huge array of collaborations in it Morby- Sounded pretty good but we were wandering and eating so we didn’t get to pay great attention to it Gilfillians “What’s Going On” - Fucking rocked it. Awesome collabs. Only complaint was that it was too loud at times to make out what he was saying. Caamp- Caught a couple songs but was too crowded so went for a decent spot to billy Billy Strings - The guy is just incredible. Will almost certainly be catching his set again tomorrow Yola - She fucking brought it! Hot damn that was energy at 110% Once & Future Sounds - The songs were great. I can’t ever get into spoken word poetry though. Also Allison’s theatrics were a bit much for me. That being said, the songs and performances themselves were phenomenal.
Today felt like a “real” Folk Fest day! Tons of collabs, the ban on drums & full bands disappeared and to the shock of no one, the energy through the fort was palpable .
Now go accept his offer and be a part of Newport history, Emma Swift
Sometimes just reflect on how much Newport and Jay Sweet has done for ALL artists. Young and old, men and women, all races They have gotten so much right. It’s OK to have a slip up.
yeah this situation is clearly not ideal and i feel terrible for her.
but i will say its a bit gross to see the internet mob, nearly all of which weren't there, have never been to newport, know its history etc etc, jumping in to shit on a team that just pulled off something impressive and impactful. i literally saw people on twitter randomly snitch tagging local news sources with "YOU MUST COVER THIS ATROCITY," just seems weird and itd be nice if was something that could be resolved btwn the parties involved, not random internet fanboys rushing to get involved in the latest controversy.

Agree 100% In a previous life, this could have been dealt with by human beings talking to each other. Or maybe Emma Swift Could have done a minute of research on what kind of people Taylor, John, and Matt are. Wonderful humans who have always stood up for, helped, and welcomed women artists into their small world.
By her saying “three men”, it immediately summoned the Twitter mafia.
I really hope she accepts their offer to play WITH them.
To truly believe they just shunned her is to ignore everything that Jay has done at Newport to create the environment we all love.

pretty accurate description of what happened though?
1.it should not of happened. 2. Jay should of apologized immediately instead of "deep breaths, teams tired, etc.) 3. In the end Emma makes out great IMO. guesting on the middle brother set AND bumped to the main stage.

She only comes out great if she takes the offer to play today. It was an unfortunate mistake. Of course this stinks for her and her band. Jay did apologize. So did Taylor. It’s the “make them pay” crowd that bothers me.
Your life is a resume. Social media never takes 2 seconds to reflect on the people they are targeting.
We just had Matt Vazquez come to play my wife’s 50th birthday. He is one of the kindest people I’ve met. Along with his band. To assume Middle Brother just booted some new artist off her first ever Newport appearance is so misguided and short sighted.

I agree, mistakes happen and NFF/Middle Brother made amends so that should be the end of that. Unfortunately the whole thing makes the fest looks incompetent.

Since you paid Matt Vazquez come to play a private gig, I assume you're pretty well off, and probably that's why you're sounding a little arrogant here.
A few of my thoughts as somebody who probably can never afford to invite an artist for a personal birthday party:
1. Emma is not asking anybody to pay. The internet is.
2. Jay's apology was insensitive and had typos. That's not how you apologize. Taylor's apology was way great.
3. Emma did not ask you what she should do, so please stop offering unsolicited advice like "she only comes out great if she takes the offer to play today". She doesn't owe anybody anything.
I didn't even know of Emma Swift before this year's NFF, but in my book, she has all the rights to be upset in this situation. I wish Jay's apology was more thoughtful. I lost some respect for him after this.

Calling out the typos - now you’re just looking to be upset by anything
So, acknowledging a mistake was made , what would the proper action be from Jay?

You really shouldn’t assume anything about people you don’t know. Newport Folk is an expensive trip that we couldn’t afford this year because we had this party instead. Several people/friends help make it happen. A once in a lifetime type of thing.
and Jay apologized. Several times.
Im not being arrogant at all. Im being sympathetic to all parties involved.
Emma called on the internet. She called Taylor, John, Matt, and Jay Sweet mysogonists by saying “Three men erased her set” which turns out wasn’t actually the case. It’s why the internet isn’t the place to hash out your grievances. Because if you get it wrong, there is no eraser.

Jay didn’t handle it well. He’ll suck it up (hopefully) and take his lumps. I don’t think he needs people on the internet to stick up for him tho. He’s a big boy on a big salary.

Sorry about my wrong assumption! I just personally hate the idea of "put on your big boy pants" when the person is justified to be upset.
After I read your comment, I do agree that Emma's tweet is more targeted than it could have been.
I still think Jay should have be more considerate in his apology, though. The whole "I need to let me my team sleep" with the typo just reads lazy. Jay gets paid $380k a year and I always thought highly of him as a thoughtful leader. I get that mistakes happen, but his apologize was his one shot on the internet to make it right, and it read rushed. Would you accept an apology that reads "I am am sorry"?
Again, sorry about making the assumption about your situation. That's insensitive of me and I hope you all had a good time.

I wasn't. If you arrive at a hotel and they tell you they oversold, with a note that says "We am sorry, but we will have a upgraded room ready for you tomorrow", would you take it and not say anything at all?
Proper actions would be: 1. Apologize, no typos. Do it from a computer if phone screen is too small. 2. Take responsibility head-on, not "it's the young team who did this and I wasn't aware". Jay makes $380k a year and have been in the industry for decades; those young people make much less. 3. Drop that "she is rebooked at a better stage now, so we are all set" attitude.

Definitely disappointed in his initial response to the whole situation. His 'being tired' excuse was so weak when he is sitting front row for the middle brother busking set. Maybe all the "In Jay we trust" stuff was getting to his head a bit. He is definitely taking his lumps and I am sure he will learn from it.
