Cyrus also shared a cover of her godmother Dolly Parton‘s ‘Light Of A Clear Blue Morning’ for the show’s cold open, which saw the show’s cast and guests celebrating Mother’s Day, which falls today (May 9).
happy for jay and team that despite it all theyll end up getting 10k folkers in (albeit over two, much different events). didnt think itd be possible.
that being said, despite my fomo i think my wife and i will pass this year. kid on the way and not quite ready for a post pandemic festival world. so i strongly advocate for any and all streaming options, video, audio, pay, whatever.

Congrats to you and your wife! I'm hoping to go, but also really hope there is streaming for anybody who can't make it.
As much as I like having 3 stages, and I see A LOT of acts on the smallest of the three stages, I have confidence that there will always be an act I want to see on 1 of the 2 stages. And less running from stage to stage!
I wonder what this does for the smallest of the acts though. I can’t imagine that Newport won’t invite them to play - Newport is all about elevating these acts. Too many of them and you cut into the name recognition acts that define a weekend and make people feel like $230 was money well spent. I wonder if they’ll invite these acts to play shorter sets in between larger act sets? (When I say name recognition, I’m not suggesting the typical headliners. But I am thinking about the Dawes, Tweedys, Deer Ticks, Lone Bellows, Lord Hurons, of the world.)
I’m interested to see if a 5K capacity actually feels like less people. With one and a half fewer stages to break up the crowds, it may not feel that much more distant.
I wonder how they also manage the pathway between the Quad and the Fort stages. That thing is not made for social distancing. I’d kind of hope they open up the space in some way that they can offer a second path into the fort.

I think they should be able to balance it pretty well. If anything I think it gives more smaller names opportunities to play the bigger stages. We just have to accept that each weekend's lineup isn't going to be as fleshed out as the fest we're used to. Your money this year is going to keep the festival and these artists alive
Here's a little mock two-day lineup/schedule I whipped up as an example.
Fort: Erin Rae > "What's Going On" > Yola > Delta Spirit > Brittany Howard > Monsters of Folk Quad: Sunny War > Steve Gunn & William Tyler > Ian Noe > Waxahatchee > Caamp > Lord Huron
Fort: The War and Treaty > Joy Oladokun > Hiss Golden Messenger > Sharon Van Etten > Big Thief > Lucinda Williams Quad: Early James > The Secret Sisters > Lee Fields & The Expressions > Billy Strings > The Lone Bellow > Sylvan Esso

Really hoping Steve Gunn and William Tyler play this year, that was such a great booking last year. Really the whole 2020 lineup was stacked. Though I don't feel very confident that Randy Newman will be here this year, which would be a bummer.

Sampa the Great is another one I would love to come back but I think is probably unlikely. If not this year, I hope they hold on to her for the full fest in '22. I'm just generally excited to see more hip-hop inclusion at Newport

Agreed, Little Simz and Jamila Woods would also be very welcome
Also, Leon Bridges announced his new album is out in July. Looking forward to hearing his new stuff.
Just hope it’s better than his last. Did not like that album at all.
I liked some of it, but I'm curious what the direction will be on the new one. I thought his EP with Khruangbin was really cool. I saw that the video for his new single was directed by Anderson Paak, so I wonder if that's any indication of a new sound.
I have a feeling tickets will be easy to get this year. Our group of 15-20 (been going every year since 2010) is not going this summer.
For us it’s just not the same without the aftershows. Doubt the DeerTick crew is gonna be there this summer. Hopefully be back in 22
We are likely gonna pool our “Newport money” into bringing an artist to Charleston instead. ‘Find 50 people to throw in $200 and you can have a nice little party

Yeah if you go by the interest from just the FB announcement about the tickets going on sale, it does seem like less interest this year.
Time will tell, but yeah wouldn’t be surprised if the purchase process is less hectic this year.

I hope this doesn’t sell out immediately if just because it means Newport might need to actually market it a little bit more and a few more acts will get spoiled before the festival.
That said, I still think that this is going to sell out fast. If it was at 7,000 capacity for each event, maybe not. But at 5,000 capacity for each event, given that it usually sells out in less than a minute with a Lyte line that spans well over 1,000. I can’t imagine tickets not moving for something that will welcome us all back to music in a relatively safe, open, and outdoor environment. There might be the case where the weekend sells out immediately and the weekday takes a little longer, like Coachella, but hard to say. In some ways, the two events give even more flexibility for the people who sometimes curse their cousin for having a wedding on the same weekend.
Also, why do we think Deer Tick won’t be there? They seem like an excellent choice as headliner for an event like this. Wouldn’t need big $$ to play. Have a relationship with the city and the festival. Could easily throw down a Deer Tick + Friends set. Etc.

I think he was specifically referring to the aftershows at the cafe.
Ah, got it. I really hope someone is trying to think outside of the box for a distanced outdoor after show. I know it’s just not the same as a sweaty night at the club, but could be really special.
Also... this has me thinking that it would be really cool if Dawes + Friends headlined one of the events and Deer Tick + Friends headlined the other. Not sure which one I’d rather end up at.

I commented on Newport's most recent IG post asking if they'd be there and William Tyler responded "very likely "
