This is not a Danny Wimmer butt rock fest. I know they booked Slipknot last year, but that was as a last minute replacement to a replacement headliner. Korn and Avenged Sevenfold aren't going to be there.
Imma let you finish, but 2018 had Weezer and Incubus in the top 4... This is still slim pickings pandemic time and maybe butt rock will swoop in to save the day again! Also, is Rise Against considered butt rock yet?
My Chemical Romance * Misfits * Scorpions Deftones * Olivia Rodrigo * Death Cab for Cutie
I'd scream if I got to see MCR, Deftones, and Olivia Rodrigo for $150

It's far more likely that the missing headliner is an indie darling than another arena sized act like Green Day.
This fest has booked the National, Modest Mouse, Beck, and Flaming Lips (not indie I know but still) as headliners.
I could see Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Death Cab for Cutie, the Strokes, or Interpol as the final headliner to balance out MCR and the Misfits.
There's also a small chance the final headliner is a rap act after RTJ headlined last year - Tyler would be weird but I could definitely see him having a good time with it.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
With The Format cancelling their reunion tour dates that had been rolled over to March from 2020 and alluding to doing it in bigger spaces once things are safer, I could see them being a sub-level act here.
NEW HEADLINER THEORY: I read somewhere that Jack White might be an option for Lolla. This is due to his Chicago stop being short when compared to multiple nights in similarly sized cities, alluding to plans to return later on in the tour. At first I dismissed this theory based on the fact that he is playing an arena, but when at 3/4 capacity as it appears on Ticketmaster, its not THAT much bigger than where he is playing multiple nights in Nashville and LA.
Buy why RF over Lolla? For this tour, he is playing with a fairly stripped down 4 piece. I personally think this more rock-oriented setup would go over better at RF. ON TOP OF THAT, he has already played Riot Fest once with the Raconteurs. RF always seems to leave a great impression on bands which is why so many return.
Personally, I would be stoked for My Chemical Romance * Misfits * Jack White
Wolf Alice might be a possibility. They skip Chicago on their new dates and are booked for WWWY so they could start at Riot and go around the u.s. to finish in Vegas. They cannot play at Lolla since theyll be finishing up a tour that weekend opening for Harry Styles.
MCR-Misfits-Jack seems like a much bigger 3 then they've been rolling out lately but as far as speculation goes I can definitely see the thought process. It would also track with them not announcing him (and rest of lineup) until after the UIC show. It feels unlikely yet it does pass the sniff test.
His tour routing (and past history) puts him right in Lolla's crosshairs, but he just doesn't feel like a top 4 headliner at this point and he seems kind of Billy Corgan-y that he'd rather headline a small fest than take a consolation prize at a bigger one.
Any chance we might see Thrice playing their best album from start to finish at Riot Fest?
Doubt it. Dustin's voice cant handle that anymore. Neither can their wrists for all those riffs. They were going to perform Vheissu at Riot in 2020 and then covid derailed those plans. They have a headline slot booked at 2000Trees in the uk for a Vheissu set and its prob the last time theyll do it. Theyve really grown out of playing anything pre Artist now and I really dont mind that at all. Along with Horizons/West coming sometime this year there is almost zero incentive to do anything for ios. When Alchemy Index turned 10 they did 1 song from each e.p. during the co headline tour they had with Circa and that was it.
NIN just announced a Cleveland one off on 9/26. Probably doesn’t mean anything but who knows. Maybe also worth noting Ministry and Nitzer Ebb are opening.

9/24. And NIN is still at Primavera on Riot weekend. It might put them into play for some butt rock fest or even ACL but thats it.

True, forgot about Primavera LA. I think it’s more likely that it puts Ministry in play for this.

NIN could play Friday in LA and Sunday at Riot on their way back to the Midwest. I’m still of the opinion that Misfits - NIN - MCR is too big for a Riot top line, but logistically it makes sense.

Going to guess with this new Las Vegas date on 9/15 that’s a lot less likely now.

I wouldn’t think that would make them any less likely than before that was announced.
Vegas 9/15 -> LA 9/16 -> travel -> Chicago 9/18 -> back to Cleveland to rest up for the big hometown show 9/24. This routing plus the fact that it would be a makeup show at Riot has me actually starting to believe they’ll be there. Of course, this theory will go up in flames when they’re announced for Sunday night at Primavera.

No reason to play a back to back here when they dont have to. And its not as if theyre jetting everywhere for these shows routing wise.

At this point I've basically convinced myself NIN is our third headliner.
Exhibit A: Obviously, they were announced as a 2021 headliner and had to drop out. No idea how these negotiations work, but this could mean they'd sign on for 2022 at a slight discount.
Exhibit B: The routing makes perfect sense, assuming they're Friday at Primavera LA. That's their last show west of Chicago, and every show after Riot is east of Chicago.
Exhibit C: They're playing LTL the same weekend as the Cleveland date, meaning there's at least one other 2022 festival date that wasn't officially announced as part of this tour AND they're willing to play shows in different states a day or two apart (they're also playing in Tennessee the day after their Shaky set).
Exhibit D: NIN - MCR - Misfits would be one of the most focused and unique trio of headliners for any fest this size in recent years, it would be a huge whiff for them to miss out on NIN given the above evidence.
Exhibit E: I want it to happen
Edit - Exhibit F: This tweet. Obviously it's just another sarcastic joke tweet from an account known for sarcastic joke tweets, but they still took the time to acknowledge the tweet they're replying to. Lock it up, NIN is our Sunday headliner.
