Really only wanted to get this thread started because there’s no Chicago date on Mitski’s winter tour and she seems as good a candidate to headline this festival as anyone else.

Is she really headline status?
I’ve seen at least a million Twitter and tumblr memes about “Nobody”. She definitely will.

I think we’re just getting the 2020 trio back and then its a matter of filling out the rest.RTJ is all but confirmed.
This is everyone who didnt perform last month. Sharon is the only sub on the list. Mitski easily gets second on any day if they have her booked.
Run The Jewels Yeah Yeah Yeah’s The National
Jehnny Beth Deafheaven Tim Hecker Fennesz Spelling Femdot Kaina Sharon Van Etten Twin Peaks Tierra Whack Badbadnotgood Dave Boy scouts Ezra collective Margaux Rapsody The Hecks Dustin Laurenz’s Snaketime
RTJ are opening for Rage on their Chicago dates in July next year so they won’t be back. I doubt YYYs come back either, maybe the National if they’ve got a new album out.

Ummmmm, the tour dates are an exact mirror of 2020 for RTJ. They were going to play United Center regardless of their headlining status 4 days later. On top of that, RTJ is not with Rage in Montreal on July 16. There is a gap for RTJ from July 16 - 19 from when their next scheduled show will happen. They can just fly back for the 17th and get back onto the Rage tour 2 days later.

When the Rage tour was originally scheduled in 2020 the only date RTJ wasn’t opening for them was in Chicago.

Went back and finally found a tour poster which had it. I honestly never noticed that exception on it way back when. I still don’t think it’s going to matter with those shows being beyond sold out. Dont know what downside there is is to have them back at the fest. There is still a gap on that weekend which they can make work so unless El P says theyre not coming back, its a possibility until the poster says otherwise in 5 months.
To use comps from this year's lineup, Mitski feels closer to Angel Olsen or Big Thief than Phoebe or St. Vincent to me
Very possible I'm underestimating the size of her online fanbase though... would love to see her regardless of where she's billed!
She's playing 6k capacity venues in NYC and DC, which makes her big enough for Pitchfork headliner status.
we shall see how they sell. the DC venue specifically often books acts that are just bigger than 1k but comfortably smaller than 6k has a bunch of room. like Jungle played there last night and it was far from sold out, and Jungle wouldnt headline a festival of Pitchfork's size
I think you’re underestimating mitski. She has more monthly listeners than Phoebe and St Vincent even though st Vincent just released an album and Phoebe has gotten a huge push recently. Mitski even had a few big Tiktok songs.
More to the point, Mitski is playing the Palace Theatre in St. Paul, which is a huge venue. I assume she'd either perform the Aragon (lol) or at the very least the Chicago Theatre, which are both venues recent headliners of this festival have played at!
Maybe Mitski's people saw what Japanese Breakfast is currently doing on tour and thought there is no damn way it should be done that way. Playing 1,000 cap venues 5 times to meet demand is not ideal, just do one night in a 6,000 cap room and off ya go to the next city.
Speaking of which, I think JB would easily get a sub slot on the bill for next year.

0 reason to think he'd be touring or interested, but since they've now had both Lauryn Hill and Badu it only seems fair they book D'Angelo for us at some point

this would be great, but now that they've had back to back to back legacy R&B headliners I also kind of hope they mix it up next time.

Unreasonably expecting this now. A day ticket would be less than tickets for a headline D'Angelo show last time I had a chance to see him.

Phoebe was gonna do 2 nights at Palace (moved to an outdoor venue) and St. Vincent played at The Armory which has an 8k capacity. But I'm pretty sure Big Thief played Palace.

St. Vincent played the Armory? Lmao
Yeah don't think it sold very well. MSP doesn't really have a good venue between Palace and Armory capacity wise so it makes for some empty Armory shows

I bet JB will just wait until her next album cycle and then be a headliner.
Nah. They purposely avoided the bigger festivals this year so they could be booked for next year. She’ll be popping up in the summer/fall 2022 fests for sure.
garageland already pointed this out in the Upcoming Shows thread but Tirzah announced a tour with no Midwest dates; she seems like a slam dunk for a repeat.
