The new location is the biggest win of this year's installment, without question. There was space to roam, there were trees to provide shade, there were places to sit and chill...unlike Randall's, it never felt like there were choke points where things just got super-clogged, although that may also have been due to the undersell, so I'm not sure if it'd be different at capacity. Someone on reddit said Corona > Randall's > Governor's Island > Citi Field parking lot, and I'd say that's accurate.
There were only three things I noted as potential negatives: 1) It was super-dusty. I don't know how much they can do about that, and blowing dirt out of your nose later is a festival tradition, and all, but it was definitely a thing. 2) My wife and I were trying to figure out if it was just our mind playing tricks on us, but the field at the GovBall stage seemed pretty small in comparison to the main field at Randall's. 3) I've seen some people complaining about the walk between gates and train, which was about 15-20 minutes depending on your pace. Personally, I didn't mind that all that much, because I used to walk over the bridge back and forth to/from Astoria, and that was like 50 minutes all-in, so this didn't feel like much. Plus, the 7 super express is great - from the time we started walking off the field to our door in Astoria, it was about 75 minutes or so. That's pretty solid on a Sunday night.
So, yeah, it's a great move and I hope they get the chance to build on it. But they really have to figure out how to draw people. I don't know what booking strategy they can follow other than "spend more money." I thought the top-line names this year would be a decent draw. Instead, Friday was chill and Saturday was empty enough that they let Friday single-day pass holders come back for free. I really don't know what it is. They've certainly pivoted away from booking for the old folks, but maybe it's more a matter of depth on each day than who's at the top? I dunno.
I do really think they should look at going 18+-unless-accompanied again, and I don't just say that because I'm an old grump. Like, it's anecdotal, but my wife's niece is 20, and she said she and her friends don't want to go "because of all the high school kids." That's pretty much GovBall's brand right now, and I think it's hurting their draw with everyone else - and you need the 21-plus folks to buy all your booze. I genuinely think a lot of folks in the 18-34 demo would come back if they knew they wouldn't have to deal with drunk 13 year olds, and it's not like they'd have to go as mature as they did with their booking in 2020; just aim at what that 18-30 group is listening to.
Anyway. TL;DR - new location is great, lack of sales a bummer, hope they get to build on this foundation somehow moving forward.
I just saw on reddit that Friday ticket holders can show up tomorrow for FREE, unprecedented for GovBall low ticket sales and I have to guess today sold the most single day tickets.
Yeah, that can’t be great.
Yes I am old and I loved this festival from 2013 through 2018 but hopefully this awful Saturday tickets will do some convincing to at least attempt to vary the lineup with acts of different genres or for different age groups instead of catering to the high school and under crowd

u know this lineup was varied genres compared to 2022 right. Lizzo and Kendrick also neither for high schoolers.

All excellent points. The Fri passes allowing people to get in for free on Sat is a BIG indication of the lack of interest even amongst the drunk kids for their booking trends. I agree that they should focus on the 18-30 crowd so they can drive concession sales which would still probably be pop/hip-hop heavy but maybe with a sprinkling of popular/nostalgia indie. The fact that they haven't embraced any of the emo nostalgia is shocking (Paramore would have been a slam dunk headliner at this festival).

Yah, I went back and forth on going for a lot of reasons. We would've loved the line-up every day and been happy with buying early bird weekend passes. But I knew nothing ruins a concert more than dumbass kids being too drunk to function. Because of what I do for my day job, I get extra annoyed at people who can't hold their shit together at concerts, but with kids it's a whole other level of buzzkill.
It blows cuz I'd love to enjoy a fest in my own backyard and not fly to one and spend $ on hotels. I'd love to go last minute to a fest and enjoy it.
Appealing to kids that just want to get drunk and party is probably their best option unfortunately. I think they are in a tough place booking wise. It's pretty much impossible to book a multi genre lineup here that both has broad/mainstream appeal while also feeling special. Basically all the big names on the lineup have played multiple high profile shows in the city in the last year and many will come back soon.
The new location is the biggest win of this year's installment, without question. 1) It was super-dusty... 2) ...the field at the GovBall stage seemed pretty small in comparison to the main field at Randall's... 3) ...the walk between gates and train, which was about 15-20 minutes...
Nice write-up, jorge- glad the new location works better.
1) Let's hope the dust was just a temporary by-product of the recent drought in our area. 2) Field size is a concern, for a blockbuster headliner. Randalls main field, while deep, narrowed as you got closer to the stage. Crowd would push forward and in from the sides, creating the most packed and potentially dangerous situation I ever experienced at a festival (even 75-100 feet back). 3) Anyone who has experienced Randall's 1 hour, single-file exit march up the stairs and over the bridge to the subway won't complain about 15-20 minutes. All relative, I guess...
I hope the lineups return to the multi-genre format we got in the mid 2010's. 2020 lineup was great, and we'd planned on going, but it was not to be...
The Gov Ball team is currently answered some questions on Reddit (link below). Sounds like they're well aware of the teen partying rep that Gov Ball has but also don't want to gate-keep (which I can admire as I had many of my formidable live music experiences under the age 18).
I've never been to Gov Ball before but if they want to keep the event all ages beer jails might be the best option. It's not ideal but it would keep underage kids from being able to buy booze.

Just got back home from the weekend, no major complaints really, venue was way better than the Citi Field parking lot. Went for Kendrick, Pusha T, and Black Midi. Saw some of Lil Nas X, Pinkpanthress, Giveon and Coast Contra. Would def go back depending on lineup. Def think they need to do 18+ or with a chaperone or change the lineup to artists that don't appeal to just high schoolers. Worst thing I saw was a fight almost break out by the lockers after Kendrick from someone who clearly drank too much (probably underage).
I don't think it's an issue with high schoolers someone being able to buy alcohol from concession stands. From everything I've witnessed, kids are getting drunk BEFORE the fest and then chugging liquor that someone snuck in during which is usually a recipe for disaster.

I just got an email to answer a survey from them - checked that I was over 35 and immediately got an oops, nevermind, we don't want you message, so I don't think they're interested in any olds for this.
11/28 Raveonettes (Copenhagen, Denmark) 12/4 Interpol 12/14 LCD Soundsystem 12/31 Billy Joel 1/25 The Killers (Las Vegas) 2/12 Jack White 2/25 Father John Misty 3/6 Inhaler 4/10 Franz Ferdinand 4/17 Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds 5/15 Amyl & the Sniffers 5/18 Fontaines D.C. 9/1 Oasis

So, IDLES just announced a 2024 tour with no NYC date and a gap 5/23-6/10. Could they end up here?
Really curious about what the booking philosophy will be this year.
Their fanbase seems pretty diverse age wise so I could see them appealing to the younger gov ball crowd but it would probably annoy all of the greenpoint/wburg/bushwick dads that are always rocking the IDLES tees.

As an Astoria-based dad, I'm more than happy to stand in the back with my arms crossed, gently bouncing along on my Merrell hiking shoe-clad feet while the youths mosh up front.
This is a festival that booked Air back in 2017 so Idles wouldn't be too absurd of a reach. Paramore would also be a slam dunk headliner much to the chagrin of most of this board.

Paramore's in France and the UK during the two potential GovBall weekends (5/31-6/2 or, more likely, 6/7-6/9), so that's a slam dunk that won't be happening (FWIW, I'd have been into it).

Dates are June 7-9. I'd imagine lineup next week. I'm looking forward to another year of, "Wow, this festival really isn't booked for me, any more." Whee!
phil507, any interest in changing the thread title?

I completely forgot that I started this thread. I'll do that.

The only hope for the over 30 crowd for this fest is if they cancel Sound on Sound and choose to go back to having an eclectic lineup here
Some crossovers from Boston Calling that might make sense: Cannons, Lovejoy, Leon Bridges
Lovejoy just played last year, so they're unlikely.
I think there's more. Renee Rapp (as teased in the tweet), Megan thee Stallion, Chappell Roan, maybe Luke Hemmings.
Be nice if GovBall finally snagged Khruangbin, but I dunno. It really depends if they slate any of the lineup at all toward the olds.
If Renee, Megan and Chappell are playing on the same day (doubt it but I can dream) all of my friends would go and it would be a great time, even if we were mistaken for everyone's Old Lesbian Aunts

I listened to Renee Rapp's album, Snow Angel. It has a couple of legit bangers on it - "Talk Too Much" is great. "I Hate Boston" has a great chorus, but I could swear the melody/progression of it is lifted from something else (maybe not intentionally - I've written more than a couple songs that I later realized I totally stole parts of without meaning to); I just can't put my finger on it.
Lyrically, she covers the entire spectrum of human experience: Being sad after a breakup, being bitter after a breakup, being happy after a breakup, being angry after a breakup, being defiant after a breakup...I think one of the reasons I liked "Talk Too Much" so much is that it's one of only two songs on the record that's not about a breakup. And it's all couched in that special solipsism we all have about breakups when we're that young - my ex sucks, the person they're with after me sucks, they are totally in the wrong and I am the innocent, wounded victim in all this. Over and over. By "Tummy Hurts" when she's calling her ex and his new partner monsters and actively wishing heartbreak on their unborn future child, I was, like, damn, girl, I know being dumped is the worst, but maybe dial it back on the emotional violence, because people are messy and complicated.
Anyhoo. Watched a couple of live videos, too, and she's a strong performer, but it's going to be one of those sets where the fans are scream-singing every lyric, so, you know, pluses and minuses.
