I don't know anything about lolla booking, but to imply Alesso isn't one of the biggest names in EDM is absurd. He's been headliner level for at least 7 years
I am not up to speed on the relative size of Alesso, but there is going to have to be someone who draws the short straw to play on the North Stage as counter programming to Dua Lipa.
I'm assuming it will have to be a sacrificial lamb because I'm not seeing how Dua doesn't pull 90% of the crowd on her night.

well he has played Perrys the last two times playing Lolla in 2019 and 2014
After seeing some of these other line-ups, this feels like a top line that's going to be some version of:
Billie / Dua Lipa / J Cole / Doja
I guess it's possible/likely that you'd have a Lolla rock staple like Jack White or Arctics in that 4 or 5 range, but does anyone really have higher expectations for the top line at this point? Pearl Jam seems kind of pointless to book in 2022 for this crowd.

Lolla has been following the trend of moving towards the rap/edm/pop scene. Even with the changes that have been happening they have always booked at least 1 top 4 rock act. I expect that to continue this year as well.

Lolla has more crossover with Osheaga than any other main festival (Roo, Chella, etc), not that its surprising given they are the same weekend. Last few years they have announced late feb/early march before Lollapalooza.

EDM is fading at the big fest headliner level, and there are a mind boggling number of EDM festivals in Chicago that can compete for those acts that are a notable but not show stopping draw. I think the EDM element at Lolla is going to be replaced more and more with rap and pop acts (Billie, Dua Lipa, A$AP Rocky, etc) that appeal to that same general demo but also have a broader audience. That doesn't mean Perry's is going anywhere, or that there won't be an electronic headliner in the mix some years, I just think it's going to be less common moving forward.
And yeah, I expect that Lolla will always have at least some degree of rock at the top of the bill. At least one act in the top 4 and some solid counter programming mixed into the 5-8 slots. Now whether it's the rock acts you want to see or not is another matter all together...

In terms of expectations, I think that would be a very solid top-4 if Lolla truly decides to pivot to all pop/rap South HLers. I don't think it'll happen as I feel like C3 will still throw in a token rock act on the top line, but those four names would be superior to other pop/rap-focused fests this year.
In terms of realistic rock names, I agree with the aforementioned Jake White/AM/Green Day grouping. Stevie Nicks is also in play...and a wildcard I'll throw out there: GnR (open dates + played some fests last year + C3 booked them for ACL & Voodoo in 2019)

Past history says that there's probably one rock name out there, but it also seems like some of the other majorish fests have taken a harder than expected turn in the other direction. I'm just saying that I wouldn't at all be shocked to see the top "rock" (and that's super charitable) name be MGK.
Especially since that pandemic offyear seemed to create a backlog of super Lolla-y names that are due to headline. Billie/Dua for sure. J. Cole seemed set for last year and is everywhere this year. Doja could probably headline south. MGK seems likely to be at least north. I have never listened to Rufus Du Sol in my life and don't even know what genre it is but I know they're big and right in Lolla's wheelhouse and could probably close north.
My compass here is that Lolla also seems hellbent on making sure I don't return even for a day, and it's seemingly very easy for me to envision scenarios where that is the case again. Would rather be wrong. I tip my cap to the Journey billing last year but I've seen Journey a couple of times and that wasn't getting it done.

All fair points. So for discussion's sake: in your scenario where its all pop/rap HLers on South, who would be the *realistic* rock/rock-adjacent acts that you would be happy closing North? Lolla would probably throw fans like us a bone and book someone kinda random like Beck or something, but not sure if you'd find that sufficient.

Pearl Jam would get me there. Beck would get me there but they've had a million chances to book him and never do. I don't need to see Green Day again. Jack White and Arctics seem likely/plausible but I've seen them enough that it's probably a pass. I'll always support QOTSA but I think Josh has been canceled.
To be clear - I don't think Lolla should be really obligated to book what I want personally. I have always felt very strong that Lolla is and should always be for the youngs. I went as a teenager and then continued to have a good run throughout most of the 2010s until they hit 4 days and it started to get watered down a bit and outside of my wheelhouse. I am pretty honest with myself that I just don't really have the time to keep tabs on all of the newer indie pop bands that come out.
Every year I seem to have less and less time to commit to listening to music, and when I do have the time, I'm more likely to spend a week or two going down a rabbit hole listening to obscure drone metal or ambient IBM or experimental jazz fusion than I would be a Joji album or the latest Lil Baby record. I'm not the target audience and I shouldn't be.
That's more information than you asked for - thanks for reading.

Josh Homme has been cancelled? I know he's going through a divorce with some rather unflattering things coming out a bit him coupled with the photographer kicking incident but didn't realize there was full-on cancellation.

Not entirely sure, but doesn't seem likely to get booked anytime soon with active domestic violence allegations still being litigated. I don't know what the rules of engagement are these days on being canceled, but Josh seems to be walking a tightrope right now.
TBK are pretty washed so I don't think it was likely they'd get booked for Lolla, but doing the shed circuit seems to be the next step in their progression to becoming a legacy act.
They feel ripe for that Innings spring training festival at somepoint soon and then after that they become a featured headliner on those other California/Florida beach fests alongside 311 and Incubus and G Love.
Lollapalooza usually announces Late March. In 2019, it was March 20. In 2018, it was March 21. In 2021, it was in May but that's because the festival happening wasn't a sure thing until May.
