With the 3rd season coming soon I started a re-watch from the beginning. Up to episode 3 now. Love all the moments where Hader is clearly out of his element but also loving the feeling of community and friends and a "normal" life early on in the show. The way Fuches has manipulated him and how his PTSD has messed with his outlook it more apparent on re-watches, obviously.
Anyway, this section from episode 3 killed me...specifically the "Little What leads to Big WHAT for Full effect". NoHo Hank is a legend.
BARRY: I'm set up to kill Paco like you asked me to. What do you mean, what am I doing?
NOHO HANK: Oh, right. Duh. Umm, here's the thing. I need you to wait, Barry, just a little bit longer for my signal.
BARRY: Wait? For what? Wait...What... What signal? Why?
NOHO HANK: Because we sent bullet to the Bolivians.
BARRY: You sent a bullet to the Bolivians? What, like in the mail?
NOHO HANK: DHL. It's actually really cool. So, Paco is our informant within the Bolivians. We tell him, "Trust us. Tell us everything you know." He tell us, because he is stupid, and now we have to kill him before he tell other people he tell us.
BARRY: Okay, what does that have to do with mailing a bullet?
NOHO HANK: See, this way, we send message to the Bolivians, get inside their heads. They open mail. Bullet. "What?" Phone rings. "Hello?" Paco's dead? [SHOCKED] WHAT!?". Little "what" leads to big "what" for full effect.
BARRY: I don't fucking care! What the fuck are you doing here?
If we get more classic Hank in the new season I hope he gets awards for it. His line delivery and his facial reactions are constantly a highlight. He thinks he's so slick here in a wig.
The end of last night's episode got me. I get why some people just wait for every episode of a show to come out and binge it all.
I honestly enjoy having to wait a week with these very "tightly" written episodes.
Oh there's no part of me that wants to do it. I just get a little more the urge to jump ahead and see what happens next. It's like watching the big reveal with Hank in Breaking Bad. You can just hit next episode now, but we had to sit with that for a year plus when it was on TV. That wait was excruciating but well worth it.

Let alone in BCS when you move from the end of S03 into "Smoke" in S04. That was a BRUTAL year wait

What am I missing that you all see with this show? What do you love about it? I have things I love about it, but overall feel more and more confused every episode I watch.

my inherent bias is that i think Bill Hader is the most talented person to ever be on saturday night live. i think he's a phenomenal talent and it doesn't hurt that he seems like a swell guy.
The characters are all super well drawn. Every actor on the show is a home run hitter and the writing is so funny but also emotionally intense.
most episodes give me a solid 3-4 big laughs, that's hard for even a good sitcom to pull off. then right on the other side of that laugh is a scene that is so intense that i literally say "fuuuuuuuuck". that slingshot between super smart jokes and emotionally intense or action packed scenes is so exhilarating. whereas some great TV puts you through the ringer and can make you feel exhausted, after an episode of Barry I feel like I could run a 10k. and the story is so engaging, strong "one more episode" vibes (which unfortunately i've never been able to do because i watch Barry week to week).
"ronny/lily" is one of the best episodes of TV in the past decade. and the last two episodes of this season are so spectacular i want to say the same, but i'm still honeymooning so i don't want to make that assertion yet.

Goddammit. What happened to the reliable 10-episode season for every show on HBO? This is twice now recently where I didn’t realize it was the season finale until it was over. (The Righteous Gemstones was the other.)
I didn't love the tone shift of the season like everyone else seems to, but there definitely are commendable things about the direction they took the show. I'm glad Sally's character became less of the "dumb actor" archetype and more of her own person. I always thought it was annoying how dumb they wrote her character. The Noho Hank actor was fantastic this season and that last episode had some pretty powerful acting from him. Excited to see where they go next season
