I didn't love the tone shift of the season like everyone else seems to, but there definitely are commendable things about the direction they took the show. I'm glad Sally's character became less of the "dumb actor" archetype and more of her own person. I always thought it was annoying how dumb they wrote her character. The Noho Hank actor was fantastic this season and that last episode had some pretty powerful acting from him. Excited to see where they go next season
the tone part is pretty much my feeling about this season. Interesting about Sally, I don't know that I personally found her dumb, just vapid and incredibly selfish - which of course didn't change this year.

Yeah. The only thing that changed this season was she was put in a position with power and quickly became very toxic.

I didn't find the tone shift to be that jarring, really. It's always been a show about Barry's guilt and his inability to escape his past. People kept saying "whoa, so dark" and I'm just like.. It's a show about a cold-blooded assassin. It's always been pretty dark.
Saw somewhere yesterday that someone asked Hader about the Sally character being so petty and he was like "yeah she's mostly based on me so idk".
“But it is a thing that personally really bothers me. I think there’s actually a clip someplace of a woman who says how much she hates Sally, and so I say, “Oh, well Sally is based on me.” — which isn’t necessarily 100 percent true, but I said it just to make her feel bad. No, [I’m kidding.] But it is somewhat true. Especially this season, I relate to what Sally’s going through a lot, as far as her show and things like that. But, yeah, killer versus ambitious actress. To me, it’s pretty clear who you should be worried about.”

Sad to see it go but glad they're not stretching it out. Hoping that when it's all over HBO sign Harder and Berg for another series of whatever they want similar to the Danny McBride relationship. Just let them make something every few years
What a wild ending. GDT and Fred Armisen were so good.
I’m a little lost though on why people, besides Barry, don’t want Lon to release his Vanity Fair piece. Can anyone chime in what’s going on there ?
I had totally forgotten about GDT getting cast, so it came as a surprise to me. I sat there for a second convincing myself that I only thought it was him because his character was El Toro.
Re: Vanity Fair, Jim Moss said something in the first two episodes to Gene about how he didn't want his daughter's death to be turned into a circus. A Vanity Fair piece would very much be that. Gene's agent is freaking out probably more because he presented his story with Barry as a three hour one man show than that he talked to Vanity Fair at all. Simple reason there would be that it makes Gene look like a crazy person right after he finally shed the stigma of being talented but a horrible, horrible person to work with.
