I can't decide where to put DC. All of the stuff about the seat of american government have obvious benefits and also problems that outweigh those benefits. It's a good food city. The people are generally insufferable.
The thing with DC people is the ones who are lifers or who have been here for more than 5 or so years are generally pretty great. It’s the people in their mid 20s killing time before they fuck off to business school who suck. And living in a place where everyone more or less just follows basic Covid precautions has been amazing the last two years. The cost is also rough but no worse than the other major cities. Other great thing living here has going for it is IMP pulling in great concert talent instead of just being another stop on the Live Nation circuit.
I feel like nashville has kind of become a caricature of itself.
Parts of it. Those that live here know where the caricature ends, and the character begins.
all my college roommates were from nashville and die hard stans. even they grumble quite a bit about living there now and the influx of tourists and transplants from out west/up north.
not that they'll leave or anything, just interesting to see their perspectives shift a bit. I really like nashville, spent a lot of time hanging out in west end and boating around percy priest. memphis is definitely a bit grittier, but I'd rather live in memphis, though that's probabaly just a birth-place bias.

Yes, those are the people I meant, the mid 20s ones. I lived in Harrisburg for 12 years and it was a little better because it's way smaller but also then worse because you have the same people but in state government.

for people who care about live music as much as people on this board do, having 930 Club, The Anthem, and Merriweather Post in one metro area is probably the best small/mid/large venue combo for any city in the country
I've been to exactly half of these cities, so I'll start by voting for ones I haven't yet visited. Of those ten, I have the least interest in going to Baltimore.

What does my smoking crack have to do with my correct opinion? I'm not a fan of Nashville. I know it's an unpopular opinion here.
You are going to have to give me the basis of this stupid opinion.
First, I do acknowledge it has many positives. I love hot chicken, there are cool neighborhoods (I particularly like 12 South), there's enough outdoor stuff to do, and it has some sports stuff that I like. Oh also nude karaoke at the place in Printer's Alley. I was drunk the first time I was there and didn't understand that I didn't need to be nude to sing karaoke, it was more that I wouldn't be allowed to sing karaoke, which is why I didn't go in.
The reasons I don't like Nashville is that I don't find it all that aesthetically pleasing - it doesn't have the natural geography of some of the places on the list (or some off it), the skyline isn't particularly interesting in my opinion. It's way too crowded in Nashville, which I suppose is what happens when you build infrastructure for like 300k people and now you have like 800k people plus have become a premiere destination for bachelor parties and things like that.
I'm not a fan of country music, especially from like the mid90s to today (I like I guess what i'd call classic country just fine), so it really permeates a lot of what you do in Nashville. I don't care for Broadway either. I prefer the music in Memphis.
Some of it is my personal stubbornness - every time I'm planning a group trip, the option of Nashville comes up and I have to loudly argue against it just because I've been there so many times.
There are some personal reasons - my best friend moved moved to Nashville from Western PA in 2009 and, but for a brief sojourn back in 2014 back to Western PA, has made Nashville his home. Him and his wife like it there and just built a house (technically Murfreesboro, they started in Franklin area and have consistently moved further south to Spring Hill and now M'boro). So I'm sad that it made it much harder to see my friend and has put some distance between us (mostly just the distance caused by actual distance - I just don't see him as much).
does Boston include Somerville and Cambridge or is it just limited to Boston proper and its neighborhoods like Allston and Brighton
Anything inside 128
Most cities aren't split up the way Boston is. In most of the rest of the country - Cambridge, Somerville, Chelsea, Everett, Brookline, and some others would be in Boston proper.

Of the cities I've been to, Boston was probably my favorite. Really love LA as well. Not going to say New York is overrated, it's very grande, but just never found the charm like other people have. Charlotte getting way too much hate.
RIP San Francisco, Dallas, Jacksonville, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Austin, Orlando, San Diego, Asheville, Memphis, etc; y'all should've tried being the premiere city in your own state
Also RIP Indianapolis, St Louis, Cleveland, Birmingham, Little Rock, Boise, Albuquerque, Milwaukee, Kansas City, etc; y'all should've tried being interesting
Asheville is way better than Charlotte. In fact Charlotte might be the worst city here. I haven’t been to most of them.
yeaaaaaah i asked Teddy to not do Charlotte for the NC selection :/ but blah blah population size or something
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
Exactly! How on earth is Charlotte considered North Carolina's "premiere city" over Asheville?
Charlotte has 10 times the population
Yeah Asheville has way more character and visitor appeal. But it's tiny in comparison to Charlotte or the Triangle.
yeah but RDU should've been the selection here instead of charlotte
i went to school 25 mins from charlotte. i hardly ever visited the city, despite that proximity, until i was banging someone who lived there. that should speak volumes.

I've been to 18 of the 20 cities (not Honolulu or Portland, though Portland will be rectified as my inlaws live in Seattle, so we'll get there at some point).
I think these cities are broadly in "good" and "bad" categories, but you can find good stuff in all of the "bad" cities:
Good - NYC, LA, Seattle, Denver, Philly, New Orleans, Chicago, Minneapolis Bad - Nashville sucks, Charlotte, Miami, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Boston, Atlanta, Houston

1. Pittsburgh is the premiere city in its state, Pennsylvania can't help but have 2 Top 3 cities in the country, we're the birthplace of America baby.
2. Memphis is way better than Nashville.
3. Kansas City is definitely an interesting city.
I think Teddy is just jealous eating Alabama BBQ that he doesn't get Memphis pork ribs or KC burnt ends.
1. Meh
2. Memphis is probably my least favorite city I've ever been to, that place fucking sucks.
3. Alabama BBQ is vastly superior to Memphis sandpaper or KC candy
Raleigh is almost half million by itself, Durham up around 350k. were these not considered big enough for some reason? just curious what the measure of size was to be qualifiable here.

how is that the best combo in the country? lol
yeah it ain't shit compared to Zydeco/Avondale Brewing/Oak Mountain

1. Have you ever been to Pittsburgh or Philly? 2. Some people just don't get Memphis, that's OK. 3. Alabama BBQ is fine, though below Memphis and KC. I'm certainly going to be eating Alabama BBQ when I go to Auburn in September.

only the Philly airport, which is why I said meh, don't really have an opinion there

I’ve been to all of these (though I was in high school for Honolulu). Called a few of them home even.
Hot Takes: - Portland is leaps and bounds better than Seattle. - I used to be a Philly fan till the “attendants” at the Roots Picnic started selling squares of toilet paper to women to use the bathroom. - I just got back from Baltimore and start to miss it every time I leave. - Raleigh/Triangle and Asheville over Charlotte. It’s truly a forgettable city.

it's more that no one cares about those places/they're not iconic at all.
