Fuck some Chicago hate. I got gold level access to the city when I was engaged to someone up there. I had wonderful food, drinks, sights, walks and times.
Y'all wanna talk dope Mexican? Come on over to Pilsen or Little Village sometime, it's good shit. I only recently realized how spoiled I was growing up with it.
Also, the history of immigration to Chicago is fucking fascinating.
But I'll save the "this is why Chicago is awesome" spiel for later.
Sure, this city's fucked up, but I love it anyway.
Dope everything - Italian, Greek, random Central EU, any and all Latin, Halal, Kosher, vegetarian, steakhouses, tapas, museums, block after block of streets to walk. Lincoln Park, Gold Coast. River North and West Loop were coming up fast when I was visiting regularly 09/10. Miles of lakefront. Shit I didn’t even care if it was 15 degrees and sleeting and I was waiting on an el-train. I didn’t even mind the one day I was there and it was literally 1 degree above zero. Of course all the 80+ days were better for me. But I’m not bitching
Never realized that the US census doesn't recognize Hispanic as a racial group. Anyone more educated in this area know why that is?
The Hispanic diaspora encompasses a ton of wildly different ethnic groups - some of which have little to do with each other.
Example: Would you put an indigenous Mexican in the same racial group as an Argentine of German-Italian descent?
Hmmm I guess I didn't appreciate how much ground the term covers. Still seems surprising that the US census doesn't recognize that or some subset of it as a major group. Especially because there is generally such a strong sense of identity there. Would an Argentine of German-Italian descent consider themselves Hispanic or white?
