Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
The only names I know this year are Simon Joyner, Matt Espy, and Macie Stewart. Simon has been around forever and a day. It pairs well with Terry Allen, imo. I haven’t heard Macie, I don’t think, but know she’s played with Ken Vandermark. Espy is the drummer for Dead Rider. Gonna do a deep dive later today.
I'm really impressed with this year's lineup at the Pilot Light. This may be the first year that I spend a significant amount of time at that venue... particularly interested in seeing Tim Glick and Proteins of Magic.
(Kali) Malone & (Stephen ) O’Malley will appear together at Big Ears 2023 performing new work for pipe organ. We are doubly excited that Malone will also present a second performance of her electronic work on Saturday during the Big Ears weekend.

The announcement from last night:
The focal point of the gathering was an announcement by Ashley which underscores the fact that while the Festival itself is a major event in the spring, the organization is now developing and presenting year-round programming. He told the story of his years-long quest to bring Yo Yo Ma to Big Ears. It culminated in an hour-and-a-half zoom meeting between Ashley and Yo Yo Ma and then a gathering of a small group of musicians, park service officials, a world-class chef, story-tellers, members of the Cherokee tribe and others for great music, conversation, and food, “for no really clear purpose.”
A few weeks later Yo Yo Ma’s assistant called to say that they wanted to replicate that event in the mountain on a larger scale in Knoxville. Big Ears will produce the event May 25 – 27 all around the city, culminating on the World’s Fair Park on May 26. At that event, Yo Yo Ma will be joined by all-star guests including Rhianna Giddens, Chris Thile, Edgar Myer, and others. It is a part of Yo Yo Ma’s “Our Common Nature” initiative and will be called “Our Common Nature: An Appalachian Celebration.” Tickets for the Friday event go on sale this Friday (2/3).

Looks like I probably have to back out this year, which is a huge bummer. Making it up for a couple nights of Chicago Wilco the weekend before to make up for it. Selling my pass at early bird pricing through the exchange if anyone knows of someone looking.

Sucks but understandable. I was thinking of trying to go to the Bang On A Can “festival” in Brooklyn but ultimately decided to keep it as is.
I just got an email from Lyte asking if I wanted to sell my pass so maybe that’s an option, too?

I miss the Tuesday / Thursday updates. It was something to look forward to.
Last year was my first trip to Big Ears. I have a question for those that have been more frequently. It seemed to me that access to the artists was way more limited than I would have expected (as in non-existent). Many of the smaller artists are the type I would have expected to have interacted with the audience a little more. Maybe an appearance at a merch table - which were also mostly absent. I noticed a couple of acts set up merch at Mill & Mine but that was about it. Is this the normal for Big Ears or maybe more of a post-Covid thing? There were a couple of acts I have promoted numerous times in the past and was looking forward to saying hello. Was just surprised the artists seemed so sequestered.

Not the point of your post but it leads into it, I promise: They tend to have a big area for merch. It’s been in a few locations but with Jackson Terminal being on the venues list, I’d suspect this is the hub for all things merch related. You will see bands hocking stuff at Mill + Mine and occasionally The Standard. There was even Ryley Walker selling Grateful Dead bootlegs at the Square Room.
I’m in no way of knowing if BE takes a cut of the money made (though I suspect they don’t) but it’s an easier way to get your merch on without having to be at every show to get something.
You will see bands hanging but it’s fewer and far between. Last year was particularly harsh with the return after lockdown. It seemed like most bands kept to themselves. That said, if you keep your eyes open, you’ll see people for sure.

I think that's pretty normal for Big Ears. They do have some interviews/discussions with artists, but I don't recall a time where artists would be hanging out at a merch booth. I've been pretty lucky, though, and have been able to meet quite a few of the artists at the hotel I was staying at and at the airport. I also remember Jim Jarmusch standing behind me at a show at the KMA (but I was too shy to bug him).

With all of these new artists, I updated my Big Ears playlist. Currently sitting at 37 "must see" names in my spreadsheet, but since I've never made it to more than 25 shows per fest, I cap my playlist to that number.
I’m on a cruise in two weeks and I’m expecting the schedule to drop then because obviously.
Nice! I never thought I'd be the cruise "type," but once I went I was hooked.
Plus you're double lucky... you know the first schedule drop is going to change in ways that hurts your soul. Better to make your picks all in one swoop at the end.
