Just noticed this tidbit on the artist page:
The Knoxville performance of Exploding Star Orchestra will feature the following musicians: Rob Mazurek, Damon Locks, Craig Taborn, Angelica Sanchez, Tomeka Reid, Chad Taylor, Gerald Cleaver, and Mary Halvorson.
Assuming Halvorson is taking over the guitar duties from JP. Still stoked on this set. The new single is fire.
I miss the Tuesday / Thursday updates. It was something to look forward to.
Last year was my first trip to Big Ears. I have a question for those that have been more frequently. It seemed to me that access to the artists was way more limited than I would have expected (as in non-existent). Many of the smaller artists are the type I would have expected to have interacted with the audience a little more. Maybe an appearance at a merch table - which were also mostly absent. I noticed a couple of acts set up merch at Mill & Mine but that was about it. Is this the normal for Big Ears or maybe more of a post-Covid thing? There were a couple of acts I have promoted numerous times in the past and was looking forward to saying hello. Was just surprised the artists seemed so sequestered.
I think that's pretty normal for Big Ears. They do have some interviews/discussions with artists, but I don't recall a time where artists would be hanging out at a merch booth. I've been pretty lucky, though, and have been able to meet quite a few of the artists at the hotel I was staying at and at the airport. I also remember Jim Jarmusch standing behind me at a show at the KMA (but I was too shy to bug him).
after bothering to think about it for more than a minute, it is probably mostly related to how they reset the venues between sets.

Couple schedule updates: most things still seem locked in. A few weird overlaps that will need to be fixed at The Standard and Jig & Reel. Still seems like some big gaps for the programming at Southern Rail Station, and Sunday seems oddly thin. Exploding Star Orchestra will be the late set at Knoxville Civic on Thursday. Not sure I'll do another big pass through the source code with the official drop next week. Always worth remembering that there's a ton of time for them to shuffle things.
At this point, my worst conflicts: Grouper vs. Makaya McCraven Exploding Star Orchestra vs Vijay Iyer vs. Los Lobos vs. Kali Malone (what the fuck???) Aftab/Ismaily/Iyer vs. Joe Rainey Los Lobos (Friday) vs. Iron & Wine vs. Moor Mother Mayan Space Station vs. Bad Plus Oneohtrix Point Never vs. Wadada Leo Smith vs. Caroline

I really think my biggest conflict is 700 Bliss vs Liturgy vs Kali.
Kali is playing another set so it’s really 700 Bliss or Liturgy (who I just saw). I’d feel silly though saying they needed to book more metal and not being there. I may end up splitting sets, which I just hate doing.

I feel like the metal sets, being so few and far between, always get booked for 'primo' timeslots, so guaranteed double booking

I feel like you could even book them in the closet at the Pilot Light and it still wouldn’t pack out.
