I'm a teacher and this festival is ALWAYS the middle weekend of my spring break, but these dates would mean I'd need to leave the Sunday. Better than not going and I know a lot of folks do it, but still a tough pill to swallow.

Sunday’s are actually always pretty light, imo. I realize this year was way different with Zorn given residence in the Bijou but normally it easier to go if needed.
steveternal usually shows up Thursday, drives home, disappears for two days and re-emerges late Saturday for the festivities. I’m always in awe of that.

Encouraging to see Bjork announcing some festival sets for the fall (Primaveras in SA, potentially Desert Daze). Would be an absolute slam dunk booking for the festival demographic and a personal bucket list set for me

I love it. The problem is I’m not sure where they could put her to play as I’m sure everyone would try to be in that venue. This happened when Massive Attack announced a tour right around BE. It made so much sense but I couldn’t figure out where they’d even play.
She apparently did a secret dj set at Le Guess Who? a few years ago that went over well.
YAY! Downtown again? I’m calling in favors for next year, for sure. Getting free lodging would 100% help in insuring I’m there again.
It's interesting, but every year the most "reasonably priced" downtown hotel shifts. It's probably related to when they realize the event is being held and actually update their prices. This early in the game, the Hyatt next to the Tennessee Theater has the best price, so I grabbed that. Kinda surprised, because I think they're much better than a couple of the other hotels booking now, which were more expensive.
And you KNOW I'd love to give you free lodging... but I am likely to be traveling with my wife again. Not sure how she'd feel about that If she decides to drop out, everyone's welcome to crash at my place!
Got the Hyatt booked the first day they could sell rooms, and that took some discussions with folks at the hotline to pinpoint. Walking from the best western to old city was something our crew agreed should be avoided next year.

As an Orthodox Christian priest, late March is always within Lent, which means some additional church services and other obligations to schedule around. So, I'd be super happy if they ever moved the festival dates to another time of year (add to that, rockin' a freaky festival is not the most complimentary to a period of spiritual reflection and stillness).
But as it is, I'm willing to drive 4 hours round-trip three times over the weekend in order to be part of this magical thing with y'all. Got 2023 on my calendar already. 😎
The festival could see another increase in ticket sales in 2023 if organizers' plans to add additional venues comes to fruition. But that's not the priority, Capps said.
While 36.4 mil is absolutely wonderful, I’m afraid I’m gonna get priced out this year.

In the list of consequences and fallout many people are concerned about, with regard to the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, this is obviously near the bottom. Nevertheless, as many of those who fall on the "pro-choice" side are talking about removing their $$$ and participation from states w/ bans (from consumers to artists to businesses), I wonder what, if any, fallout will happen w/ Big Ears (given that TN is a "trigger ban" state).
Given AC's love and commitment to Knoxville, I don't imagine the festival would be moved. But I do believe (without any actual supporting evidence) that the political leanings of those who attend and participate in this festival are more liberal than, say, the CMA Music Festival. Will we see a lighter audience? Artists who refuse to perform in TN?
To be clear, I really don't want to start a political discussion here about Pro-Choice vs. Pro-Life (please), but I am curious to hear how you think the ban in TN might (or might not) impact Big Ears 2023.

Obviously it's far too early to tell but I can definitely see some artists passing on states that have outright banned abortion in the immediate aftermath. As for attendees, I think the curation/uniqueness of the festival/demographics of the attendees will insulate it. Knoxville being a blue city in a red county/state will help as well.
Anti-choice is more accurate tbh and the crux of this whole argument.

Not sure who this is but seems like it might be the first tease of a new artist for next year given the wording? Do they normally start that up this early?
Tyshawn has played at least once before. It very well could be an early early tease but I’m not really expecting anything till next month. They’re becoming more active on Socials though so maybe sooner.

Ok. I think you’re right.
I’m 99% positive William Parker hasn’t played BE before.
Yuck it up but anytime somebody says “sleeping bags allowed”, that’s a win in my book.
I was telling a friend about Big Ears, and from my memory which can be off, a show where drone music was playing with light up honeycombs and everyone laying on beanbags/blankets.
Big Ears 2023 returns Thursday, March 30 thru Sunday, April 2, and we will soon unveil much of the lineup for another unforgettable festival weekend. As next year comes together, this quick journey through last year’s festival provides us with inspiration and more than a little anticipation. Enjoy! Details about 2023 coming soon.
