If this leak ends up being legit, I may pass on it. It’s not that I think it’s bad. It’s actually quite good for my tastes. The biggest problem I have is it has a lack of “WOW factor” that previous years have had. It’s like a big name or two from that.
I can’t see the need for any of these bands playing a larger venue than the Tennessee. Sure, they could add that stuff later but I can’t drop $300 to $500 on hope.

That's where I was at this morning. Previously, my "Must See" column was reserved for artists that fell into that "WOW" zone... But after sitting down and listening to many of these artists back to back, the level of talent was just so good... that I re-purposed it I'm in. But I hear you. A David Sylvian or a Brian Eno... I'd love to have a name or two like that on the bill.

I mean it’s still possible this was an a really good mock or an early poster. There’s some graphic design nitpicking I have that I’ll save for later if it’s real. The gist is looks like a Canva poster vs a Photoshop poster.
That said, it has both William Parker and Bela Fleck on there which was teased prior to the teasing. Totally leading me to believe it’s the real thing though.
It’s solid. There’s truly something for everyone. I’m just not sold on it which is a me problem not a Big Ears problem.

I don't think this festival has a big enough following for people to try to do convincing fake mocks tbh. I'd be surprised if the poster isn't this or something very close to it
Although it is missing Beth Orton. Also kinda odd how just the last names are used for some of the Zorn stuff in the middle section

It’s just little things like that. “TICKETS ON SALE NOW” has me off put, as well. Donors get dibs on Monday. Previous ticket holders on Tuesday and general admission on Wednesday. Technically, it’s right but not really.
The Beth thing got to me, too.
The logo is what is really bothering me though lol The name has been cut off on some of the bottom letters. If this is legit, they need to fix that before Monday.
It has so many names that I’ve seen in the social media drops, that’s it’s hard to believe, to me, that this isn’t some kind of preliminary mock up by the festival. The only real issue I have with it is that there aren’t any names on here that justify a 2500 person room like the civic auditorium. Maybe those are names they’ll release after the diehards get they’re tickets on Monday and Tuesday, but it still strikes me as odd. But I would happily buy my premier pass based on this lineup alone. I would be spending a lot of time at the Zorn sets. He seemed to really love the Bijou this year.

loved the fest itself last year and I would spend the money on the lineup but the logistics of needing to have a car or spend $$$$$ staying downtown is such a headache. Logistically flying to le guess who even 2 months out makes more sense for me
Then there we go. Without Beth on there this is probably an early poster. Fingers crossed we get a few more names come Monday. Doubtful they will be huge names but a few nonetheless.

I've been thinking about what artists would really bring that "WOW Factor" (™ garageland) for me. One of the key (but not required) criteria is that I haven't seen them before. I'm older and go to a lot of shows, so that list of established artists I haven't seen before keeps getting smaller (or they retire/die before I get to see them).
With that said here are my top 30 WOW Factor artists that would be perfect for Big Ears (yes, some bands are long gone, but reunions are a thing!) Alphabetized, because I just can't rank them.
* = I've seen them before, but only a few times (or it's been a lonnnnng time since I've seen them)
Amon Düül II The Apartments Art of Noise Bark Psychosis * Battles (Atlas Lineup) Birdsongs of the Mesozoic * Björk Boards of Canada Brian Eno (saw him in 2009 w/ Jon Hassel, but it was a non-musical "conversation") Cocteau Twins Cranes Cul de Sac David Sylvian * Detektivbyrån The Durutti Column Einstürzende Neubauten Floating Points Flying Saucer Attack Gentle Giant Grace Jones * Grizzly Bear Henry Cow * His Name Is Alive Hugo Largo Iannis Xenakis * Jandek Jean-Michel Jarre John Cale * Laibach La Monte Young The Last Shadow Puppets * Magma Mission of Burma Mojave 3 Moonshake NEU! Oingo Boingo Planet P Project Robert Wyatt Ron Geesin Ryuichi Sakamoto Spacemen 3 * Squarepusher Stars of the Lid Van der Graaff Generator XTC

Another potential roadblock: airfare. I know it's a little early, but I usually buy around this time... and the cheapest main cabin seats I'm seeing right now are over $850 round trip. The flights that correspond with the time I want to take are over $1200

Have you checked Atlanta, Charlotte, or Nashville? I totally understand the ease of flying into Knoxville but it’s always been so pricey that I ended up driving. I’m betting one of those would be cheaper to fly into and just rent a car. All the downtown hotels I’ve stayed at charges for parking though.
Also, Dave Maynar and alawre were telling me they may turn the garages into pay garages by then. So be aware of that situation if you do.
After going through a lot of the line up and talks with my wife, I guess I’m in after all. I’d have too much FOMO missing a year to sit one out.
E: and obviously set a Google Flights alert and just be patient. I’m noticing prices come down a little the past few weeks and sure they will more in the future.

I live about two hours west of Knoxville, outside Asheville. I drive to Atlanta and Charlotte for flights anywhere. I recommend looking at Nashville. My cousin flew in for a funeral this past week in central Kentucky, and it was cheaper to fly to nashville and rent a car.

Thanks for the alt-airport/drive recommendations! I will look into that closer to the event, but a quick glance (again, it's early), didn't have a big savings vs. the pain and cost of driving. The joys of living in the upper-midwest. In any case, I noticed that the price of my flight was cut in half if I left on Tuesday vs. Monday. Even with an extra night of a hotel, that is still cheaper than leaving on Monday. If I do go, I might take advantage of that and actually spend a day exploring Knoxville outside of the Big Ears fence!
I also need to admit that there are plenty of ways to make this event cost effective, but I'm super whiny and have gotten used to "luxury" (direct flight, downtown hotel, VIP tix, pedicures and chakra balancing sessions during the performances, etc.). So, as usual, most of my negativity is my own doing. I'm also a little disappointed that, at this point, my usual MN crew (4 others, including my wife) are not likely to attend this year. They're also missing the "wow factor" + the increased costs in travel/lodging were enough to say, "I'll check in again for 2024." I attended 2016 alone and still had a great time, so it's not a deal breaker (plus I tend to run into people I know from home, met at the fest / inforoo), but it's adding to the "meh"

I’ve gone solo more often than not. I hate traveling by myself but the idea of going to see what I want, when I want has gotten me into a bunch of pretty spectacular shows.
With Inforoo around, you’re never really alone at sets. Looking at your must see’s, I’ll be at more than a few of those. Japanese folk? Guitar assault? Improv free form skronk? Yes, yes, and yes, please. You get to eat where and when you want to and create your own pace.
My vote is if your choice is solo vs not going if your with friends, then go. You’ll be happy you did.

I know I've been posting a lot this weekend; sorry for that So one more can't hurt, right? Unless the real announcement differs from what we've seen, I think I've put together a convincing case to attend via Spotify. No John Zorn links, but that's because he doesn't have a lot out there. I've been working on this all weekend. Smash that "like" button and hit "subscribe!" (ok, there is no like or subscribe, but I've seen enough YouTube videos to know what makes the $$$!)

At least you’re being productive. I’m going back and forth in my head trying to figure out if Beth Orton is gonna be on the lineup tomorrow or they couldn’t get the contract signed in time. 😂😂
Lineup is up on the website. No change from the leak.
...other than a couple of interesting wording changes (i.e. Christian McBride is no longer calling out New Jawn, Tarbaby dropped the call out of Orrin Evans and added "Ft. David Murray", etc.). They also got rid of the logo you called out Most importantly: "EVEN MORE TO COME..." (!!)
