David Murray is a pretty big deal for me so that was nice. If you go artist by artist you’ll notice “New Jawn” is still there but they took the wording off the poster.
So in “What If”, I’m wondering if they’ll give Zorn the Civic Auditorium for his bash. There really isn’t anything that feels different from this than previous lineups, size wise.

The one name I didn't recognize (so I didn't rank) was David Moore. The site is linking him up with Steve Gunn, but also noted that he is "the man behind the long-running ambient project Bing & Ruth." B&R were on my repeats-wish-list, so I'm really happy to see that clarification!

14 Must See’s (because 10 isn’t enough):
William Parker performs Mayan Space Station Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet John Zorn Painkiller Ricki Lee Jones Grouper Ibeyi caroline Tarbaby (featuring David Murray) 700 Bliss FUJIIIIIIIITA Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul Pino Pallidino & Blake Mills Tarta Relena Ichiko Aoba
That’s enough to justify me buying Premier, I think.

Based on the artist bios they have on the website, sounds like they'll have a collaborative album out in spring of 2023 so I'd imagine their set will be heavy on that music

My brother is looking at his schedule but tentatively in for year 2 of this. No real 'holy shit' bookings like Annette Peacock last year but solid top to bottom and I've yet to find an act on here I don't like
Feels like a bit of repetition to book Andrew Bird AND Iron & Wine AND Calexico right up top though. One or two different indie names (something like Perfume Genius or Weyes Blood or something?) there might give those top lines a bit more pop for me. Feel like the 2022 names were a little more exciting in that regard (AnCo, Yves, etc.)
Most anticipated sets without doing any more research into the lineup would be Charles Lloyd and Charlotte/Bolis but I'm sure there's a bunch of great stuff I've yet to get to. After experiencing the grandeur of that New Masada Quartet set last year gonna be tough not to just camp out and do every Zorn set though lol. I've never heard of them but my brother is stoked for the Jack Quartet doing the Catherine Lamb piece

Yeah, with the exception of Charles Lloyd, I see very little on here that will win out over me going to every Zorn set. Really wish the girl next to me that recorded that entire Electric Masada set would have emailed me. I just have to make do with the 30 minutes of it that is on YouTube from the balcony.

Does anyone have a picture of what the schedule times and venues have been like in the past? Just trying to get an idea of how hard it is to navigate venues and shows. Is VIP worth it for this festival or are there shows you will be shut out of?

I poked around and couldn’t find an old schedule or map online.
While the schedule is important, you have to factor in the travel time to each venue. I tend to split it up into two groups. The theaters (Tennessee and Bijou) and churches (and now the Civic Auditorium) in one group. The other is the Mill and Mine, the Standard, Boyd’s Jig + Reel, Pilot Light and now the Old City Performing Art Space. The KMA and Tennessee Auditorium are in the middle of these. You’re looking at a 15/20 minute walk from one end to the other. I’ve personally never figured out how to do the walk and getting into a show early.
I’ve gone GA every year and the only time I ever worry about shows are the Bijou and Church shows. Sometimes the Standard if it’s a big act. If it’s making sure you’re in, I’d suggest the Premier vs Sonic. It’ll save you a few hundred and while you won’t get in early to shows, you’ll get in.

I don’t think sonic is worth the extra $300, but if you want the secret shows, that’s how you get them. If you have premier, you’re unlikely to get shut out. The last two Zorn sets on Sunday this past fest is a prime example. I had the same seats for each show with premier, while GA folks who got in to the first show couldn’t get into the second. Honestly, a lot of the ga folks who were in line during the first show probably didn’t get into the second show. As for the venues, it’s pretty walkable and there’s the shuttle during the day. There’s so much stuff that you’re unlikely to see everything you want, but you can get a lot with planning.

I looked for a shuttle last year but never saw one, aside from a trolley with no people on it. Was that the shuttle?
Also, there are those scooters on the sidewalk to move around on if you're up for it. We took a wrong turn and ended up in the middle of an 8-lane road though, so I think the Mrs. will never be getting on one of those again.

Yes, that was them. We got one driver to go completely off course because we were the only crew who used the shuttle his whole shift, according to him. Dropped off at the door of mill and mine

Lmao That sucks but it’s one of the reasons I’ll never get on one.
I had a kid deliver a pizza on one in Raleigh. He stopped too fast, ate shit and wrecked the food. He actually got a replacement but I felt horrible he wasted 45 minutes on me. I tipped like 50% that night.
Any tips on how to best find and catch that thing? It sounds severely underutilized.
The app had the map with the stops. The issue was that some of the shuttle people didn’t know what the route was. They’d skip stops and I had to tell them where to go. It’s great but the volunteers didn’t always know what to do to help the drivers

We never did find the shuttle last year but still only got shut out of one or two things while going GA and cutting things pretty tight (Frisell trio, Zorn Chaos Magick). I think if you plan even a little bit GA is workable to avoid missing things

Usually this question isn't asked until the 4th stage...
The 7 Stages Towards Big Ears Schedule Acceptance & Festival Bliss
1. The artists are announced; you make a list of your "must see" shows and emotionally believe you will see ALL of them.
2. Schedule is published, conflicts become evident: you scream, cry, eat ice cream, and eventually become at peace with the sacrifices you need to make.
3. The schedule is changed; repeat phase 2. Time passes.
4. You realize that your schedule has some unreasonable distance vs. time vs. capacity constraints (i.e. you're not going to be able to walk from St Johns to the Mill & Mine in 5 mins); after more tears, some artists are scratched off the list. Eventually, you become at peace with the sacrifices you need to make. Time passes.
5. Oh. That's right. You're going to need to eat. You scratch out a few more artists. Time Passes.
6. Secret shows are announced; you adjust your plan, once again.
7. The event ends and you can't believe you saw as many brilliant shows as you did; plans are immediately made for next year.

I'm working on getting my playlist finalized and am struggling to find songs for the artists below. I know some of them just don't have much stuff on Spotify but if there's any there that obviously do and I'm missing it let me know!
Tyshawn Sorey; Love in Exile; Marc Ribot & the Jazz-Bins; Edgar Meyer Trios; Eliane Radigue; Annea Lockwood; Steve Reich String Quartets; all John Zorn projects; Zoh Amba; Gatos do Sul; Steve Gunn & David Moore

the weekend ends, you realize you spent 99% of it at mill and mine standing around on the patio

I love this lineup. Just an absolute home run.
More Zorn, more Arooj, four of my favorite bassists (Palladino, Ismaily, Laswell, Dunn) doing cool shit, James Blood, Cubanos Postizos. Incredible. It feels like Capps revisited the weirdest of the aughts Bonnaroo run.
Did I mention Bill Laswell?! He’s in really rough shape lately, but I’m delighted to see him getting more show checks. I scrolled the list of names on his GoFundMe (“You gotta give…”) and it really gave me joy to see how many artists I love care about this man as much as I do. A Painkiller set is probably designed to compensate his current physical limitations more than the Praxis shows were though.
I’m also looking forward to experiencing this vicariously through you all. Our baby girl is due in December (we’re almost certain she was conceived in Knoxville this year), so we’re sitting this one out. Eyes to 2024!
