Tuesday's tweet from Coachella thanking Blink for playing W1 seemed like a confirmation they wouldn't be playing W2, so maybe they were blindsided yesterday after all?
Even if they assumed he was dropping after his set on Sunday it's not exactly easy to find an available headliner with less than a weeks notice. As others have said the only reason The Weeknd worked last year was because he used SHM production setup.
Understood. And this is not amateurs leading who only have 2 days and only now started calling in for replacements. I would be disappointed if they do not have a long list/short list who committed (before they had Frank signed to this) to step in if and when Frank drops out.
Who in there right minds would keep a plan B like that when contracts are signed and everything. Imagine having that much confidence in one of your headliners. Should they keep a plan B list for all of their headliners, or just for Frank. And if so, how would a contract like that even look like and who would even agree that? "Hey, we'll give you a contract to headline Coachella.. just in case, Frank doesn't want to do it anymore".

As someone mentioned with the SZA backup situation only being up to a certain point.…maybe this will be a learning experience to either tighten up contract wording or having even more last-minute contingency plans available go forward. Something tells me, despite this fiasco, Paul T certainly won’t stop taking risks to get premier acts.
That being said, let’s just book The Strokes and release the lineup.

I’m just remembering. Weezer is playing a show nearby Monday.
They certainly seem to fit the bill of “even worse” than slotting blink 182 in (not debating if their music is worse…but certainly as an act that already played and isn’t as prolific of a “get”). And I definitely hope this is not it.
Going forward every year it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s an arena tour that just has a weird 2 week gap and they’re getting paid whatever millions to be a backup retainer in case of a drop
Interpol & The Walkmen 11.23 I Am Morbid/Suffocation 11.26 King Diamond 11.29 Sadistic Intent/Massacre 11.30 70K Tons Of Metal 2025 Hell's Heroes 2025 Sick New World 2025 Maryland Deathfest 2025

Or they could just book more reliable headliners. This happens much more to Coachella than any other festival.

My first reaction was also "damn, they really should just keep a backup on retainer," but they've managed to book Ariana Grande, Harry Styles, and The Weeknd in short notice situations. Obviously this is an even tighter window, but they'll figure it out. There's been a lot of talk about how GV/PT are crazy for taking big swings on risky headliners, but it's always worked out just fine. And those big swings are what keep this festival elite. PT would probably still rather have the only Frank performance in 6 years (and counting) than book the kind of safe top lines you see at ACL/Lolla/Bonnaroo.
I'm posting this to a Bonnaroo message board, and I still had to Google the lineup to remember who's headlining this year. Nobody is ever forgetting who headlined Coachella 2023.

Doesn’t it come with the territory of trying to be this premiere festival that books people no one else gets though?
Every other lineup this year seems like they’re some headliner iteration of each other. Coachella swung for a home run, and still got us a triple with multiple RBI’s.
Imo, business strategy-wise going forward, I think Paul should still be bold, but have backups on retainer. Insurance is the right move here I think.

Odesza is getting bumped from the Odds portion of 1999.Odds to being the Sunday headliner and they’re bringing Blink back for Friday afternoon Sahara slot

Counterpoint: part of what makes Coachella great is that they don’t just book the same headliners every festival is booking. Leave boring lineups to the various big city fests and give me something interesting. Shit, even a headliner dropping out and a scramble for a replacement is more interesting that ODESZA and Foo Fighters and whoever else is playing every single festival.
no, i am super serious. but pls note i am not a huge fan or anything, listened to maybe 3 or 4 records of their, and like nightmare the most, by far.
word, I'll have to revisit it. I saw them on that tour but haven't listened to the album since
yeah it's way better than I remember it being, besides the obvious difference in vocals even Larry Farnsworth couldn't tell the difference between that last track and late-model Iron Maiden

I didn't say book the same headliners as every other festival. There's a middle ground between doing that and trying to book someone like Kanye West almost every year.
