Counterpoint: part of what makes Coachella great is that they don’t just book the same headliners every festival is booking. Leave boring lineups to the various big city fests and give me something interesting. Shit, even a headliner dropping out and a scramble for a replacement is more interesting that ODESZA and Foo Fighters and whoever else is playing every single festival.
I didn't say book the same headliners as every other festivals. There's a middle ground between doing that and trying to book someone like Kanye West year.
I think I get what you are saying (and I've been guilty of seeing it like this myself). The old model was to book 1-2 touring headliners and then one rare act. That's basically the same format they had this year so while more forward thinking it's not THAT different of a model.
They gave Frank the spotlight and he dropped the ball. There's no one else to blame besides Frank. They didn't HAVE to give him the platform after all.

Sure, I’ve railed against the repeated Kanye bookings too, that was insanity from PT. Frank I think was a risk worth taking. Otherwise it’s mostly been bad luck or stuff they couldn’t anticipate (covid, pregnancies, injuries, festival tragedy).

Welp I’m officially getting restless. We’re not heading out to Morongo until 7pm but still can’t believe there’s no set times. I understand the situation, but still. Productivity is at an all time low over here.
For what. The festival happened. If the festival is going to cover themselves over anything of the sort theyll maybe do a partial credit for 2024 and thats it.
There's been a lot of talk about how GV/PT are crazy for taking big swings on risky headliners, but it's always worked out just fine. And those big swings are what keep this festival elite.
This is so obvious that's it's unfortunate you needed to type it out. Imagine the scenario where no fests took big swings. Safety first!
As someone mentioned with the SZA backup situation only being up to a certain point.…maybe this will be a learning experience to either tighten up contract wording or having even more last-minute contingency plans available go forward. Something tells me, despite this fiasco, Paul T certainly won’t stop taking risks to get premier acts.
That being said, let’s just book The Strokes and release the lineup.
or just stop booking such flaky assholes
How to assess this exactly tho? Jai Paul could’ve ended up the same way for all we know, but a risk was taken and it was a success. It comes with the territory of being a premier festival. Insurance solves the issues.

undercard = ok to book some flaky assholes. Headliner = book someone with a reliable track record
I'm posting this to a Bonnaroo message board, and I still had to Google the lineup to remember who's headlining this year. Nobody is ever forgetting who headlined Coachella 2023.
Rob Kellas (TPDTV) some thirthy minutes into their Coachella vlog: "I still have never heard a Bad Bunny song".

Friends flight keeps getting delayed, stuck at LAX until he arrives. Ready to get some in n out, hit the road and set up camp hopefully before sundown. Anyone from weekend one know how much iced coffee was in the campgrounds and in the fest?

I think they had two or three stands in the campgrounds, almost always had a crazy line. They also sold prepackaged cold brews in the general store.

Ask Glastonbury. Their last "risk" was Stormzy.
And that’s why Glastonbury doesn’t come close to Coachella when it comes to revenue. I get that most revenue goes to charities, but earnings still don’t come close to Coachella even if they wanted to keep it as profit.
Risks make money and Coachella won’t stop any time soon. Losing a headliner still puts them well above the rest.
Last time Coachella posted their revenue was 2017 and they set a record. They’ve only grown and upped ticket prices since then.

The coffee tent in the campgrounds was far and away the busiest tent each morning, like I would safely say an hour wait even starting at 8AM. Do yourself a favor and buy a jug of cold brew and throw it in your cooler.
Oh! Shoutout to whoever recommended the Trill burger place in Indio Central for food value. Burger, fries, and drink was $25, which is pretty decent for the fest. Also in Indio Central is Cena's vegan burritos and nachos, both were $20 but very hefty and filling. They also never had a line.
