1A. James Blake 1B. The Chemical Brothers 3. Jamie Xx 4. Bicep 5. Caribou
HM: Romy
Bit of a cop out to go 1a 1b, for James and The Chemical Brothers but James Blake music has meant alot to me over these last few years and it was incredible to see it live, but The Chemical Brothers were genuinely one of a kind and kind of sets the bar for Electronic Music shows for me going forward.
Wanted to shout out Romy because I had seen people saying after some of her other festival sets this year that she wasn't anything special, but I had a great time at her set and thought she killed it.
Another quick thought is that the sound in the warehouse was kinda fucked for most of Day 1 and since I spent most of my day in there it was definitely a bummer. I think it impacted Fred and Pinkpantheress' sets the most. Day 2 I spent more time on the mainstage and my experience was definitely better for it.
I dont think I have ever seen an inforoo response to a festival with the sort of unanmimous praise that this Chem Bros set is getting
It was truly that good.
As a huge fan of theirs for over a decade now, I'm so proud of the overwhelmingly positive sentiment and crowd size they were able to get at Portola. I don't think they came close to selling out their 2019 California dates, so I hope this convinces them to play the states more often.
Also, their show is tailor-made for festivals where they can take full advantage of the huge production and sound. Portola was leagues better than their Bill Graham and Shrine Expo Hall shows, IMO.

The 2010 shows were amazing. Still incredible they fit the show into the Fox Oakland. And to think they did the Portola set on the Outdoor Theatre. ( thats the same one, they just trucked it north ) So lets imagine if they could put em on the main again with the screens and beefed up PA

A lot of this is reinforcing my belief that if Coachella booked them, A) Weekend 2 would be packed after the buzz, and B) they’d have a mini career resurgence in the states from the attention. I can’t believe they haven’t played in 10+ years.

they also played in Denver on Friday and were literally giving away tickets on AXS to get people to show up.

Packed? No. Bigger than week 1? Yes.
Yeah this is fair. I think it’d be a solid crowd I guess is more what I’m saying. And the buzz would be huge.
And yeah, I know denver didn’t sell well. My take is that it would’ve sold better if it were after a coachella set.
2-Bicep 3-James Blake 4-Fatboy Slim 5-Jungle 6-Channel Tres (had to include this so 6 it is)
Waited a while to let it set in but now that I'm watching that lovely Reddit poster's video of the whole set, yeah, Chem Bros definitely was the best show I've ever seen. I don't have as much longtime experience as many of you (only 5 Chella's/1 Prima etc) but man. Past favorites like Soulwax and Underworld got blown out of the water. The only thing that could possibly maybe top what I saw at Portola is the robots
Thinking about it more as I'm watching this Chem Bros set, oddly the most similar thing I've seen that can even closely compare to this wasn't even another electronic act but rather that Sia set in 2016. That one was magical too. I pray I see something again that comes close to those sets. Maybe Kraftwerk or something
This lineup is excellent; I think if ODESZA is the headliner next year, there would probably be a few more ODESZA-adjacent acts on the bill (maybe Elderbrook, Golden Features, The Knocks, ford., Gilligan Moss, Devault)
This is already a buy but would also love it if M.I.A. got her return set too
