They almost seem too old school indie rock for what Boston Calling books now, post-Dessner. I've been hoping for Guided By Voices at Boston Calling for *years*, but it hasn't happened yet and I doubt that it will.
Dino, Jr. is a Massachusetts band, and they've shown a willingness to book artists with local and regional ties whom they probably wouldn't have booked if they were from Iowa.
GBV is playing House of Blues on the 26th
They also played SK last year
Yep, there's a Dino, Jr./GBV mini-tour doing three dates hosted by Eugene Mirman this month.
unrelated to Paramore, this Cali Roots fest just announced most of their lineup, which is in Monterey the same weekend as BC. Not stylistically very similar to BC's general vibe, but there are definitely a few people on here that I wouldn't have been shocked to see on the BC lineup who are now most likely ruled out
There's always been some overlap with Bottle Rock and (before it went under) Sasquatch, so I wouldn't rule anyone out, possibly except for acts playing the west coast on Saturday.
Top 10 Acts That Should, Under No Circumstances, Headline Boston Calling In 2023:
In reverse order...
10) Kid Rock
9) Post Malone
8) Tucker Carlson
7) Travis Scott
6) Any band containing at least one member with an outstanding warrant in Massachusetts, because they'll find a reason to cancel at the last minute. Bank on it.
Anyone taking bets on this guy deleting his account with how hard he’s rallied against Paramore if they are indeed headlining this thing lol
HA!! Never.
I checked out a few songs by Paramore last night, and I wasn't particularly impressed. Their music seems so calculated, as if it was designed to be as suitable as possible for use in car commercials where the target demographic of the ad is 21-35 year olds. What I didn't hear was an ounce of heart and soul; I didn't get the feeling that they meant a single word or note of it.
Misery Business was pleasant enough, and Ain't It Fun was close to that, but it all seemed so paint-by-numbers and color within the lines. Their new single was so imitative of Billie Eilish-style pop. There's nothing wrong with broadening the sound of your music, but it always sounds so cheesy when an artist simply starts doing whatever's popular right now. It reminded me of that album where Jewel did a dance pop thing. There's nothing wrong with making dance pop if that's what you really want to do, but art of any kind is at its best when you follow your muse and create what's in your heart.
Paramore makes very acceptable music, and I'll let Robyn H. weigh in on that...
The biggest problem with Paramore appearing in Boston Calling's top line is that if the festival wants to get one band that plays melodic rock and roll into the top line, Paramore is taking a spot that could have otherwise gone to The Cure, The Killers, Green Day, Stevie Nicks, or Florence, with the other two nights featuring one heavier band like Metallica or NIN and a rap/hip hop/pop artist.
It's not that they play terrible music, it's that someone who plays better music (and who'd move more tickets) won't be playing that night.

Guarantee Paramore could move more tickets than Killers and Florence but cool opinion dude.

Sure, the fact that both Killers and Florence recently played the Garden means that their fans who'd pay to see their own headlining dates might be satisfied for awhile, but far more people know and like Mr. Brightside and Dog Days than anything Paramore has ever done. Every great Boston Calling headliner would be a great TD Garden headliner, but not every great TD Garden headliner would be a great Boston Calling headliner.
Also, there's a distinct possibility that Paramore has overestimated their popularity and they'll be playing to a lot of empty sections on their arena tour.

Why do you enjoy routinely embarrassing yourself like this? lol Like I’ve never seen this level of being unable to accept taking an L in my life. You have been wrong about Paramore every time you talk about them.
3/3 Tyler, Kali Uchis, Vince Staples, Teezo Touchdown 3/4 Amine 3/14 Tame Impala 5/18 Freddie Gibbs and Zack Fox 5/25-5/27 Boston Calling 8/18 Julien Baker, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen

1. Luckily music festivals can change their booking style from one year to the next; there is not one formula. Hell, just in recent memory BC went from TOP/Travis Scott/Tame as headliners to RATM/RHCP/Foos the very next year. BC will book whoever they damn well please (aka who they think will sell tickets).
2. I trust the multi-million-dollar tour backed by multi-billion-dollar corporations with enough data, analytics & marketing power to blow your socks off knows what its doing. These guys know more about turning an ROI than anyone on this forum ever will.

Paramore is a slam dunk booking for them honestly. Especially because theyre probably cheaper than anyone who headlined last year, sell a ton of tickets, and free up more of the budget for a huge top 2 and fleshed out undercard. Really excited to see where they go with this lineup
Looks like Genesis Owusu is the 2nd opener for the first part of the Paramore tour (Bloc Party being the other and then Foals and The Linda Lindas for the 2nd half of the tour). Do you think both would be at BC (assuming a Sunday headline for Paramore)? Would love to have Genesis and his crazy energy.

The demand for the Paramore tickets in other markets is going to be overwhelming from what it sounds so don't expect much empty sections of the arena for their tour. Heard there was tons of empty sections at Florence and Killers from people who went but hey my grandma knows Dog Days Are Over so they would be a better headliner.
Glad we got Paramore for BC so I don't have to deal with the ticketmaster headache getting tickets especially since there might be demand pricing. Bloc Party and Genesis will be awesome too assume they will both be a lock.

Anybody think with Paramore booking they'd get other wwwy type bands on the undercard. They should try to get Pierce The Veil since the demand for their show at MGM is insane. Could also see them bringing back Pvris. Also maybe even 1975 since they were a 2020 band, they would be a good red before Paramore on Green

I heard there were some spicy takes in here, so I rushed over to see, and I am not disappointed.
I don't particularly love Paramore, either, and the whole pop-punk/emo wave was after my time enough that it wasn't a huge part of my life, but it's absolutely bonkers to say the band wouldn't be a winning booking for any festival in the coming year. Just real galaxy brain stuff. I'm impressed.

Curious if you thought the same about MCR when they announced their big tour and thought they were just some joke. Or is it just the misogyny we all see so clearly now.
