So, exactly how and when did they get big? Throughout the last decade, they've been playing 3,500 seat venues in Boston and closed Blue in 2018, and acts that close Blue or Red usually headline at those sized venues.
They didn't have a Kate Bush moment in a wildly popular TV series or movie, no acting/showrunning crossover like Donald Glover, HW hasn't judged a reality singing competition on U.S. TV, nobody in the band dated Pete Davidson or beefed with Kanye, and if they haven't released an album since 2017 or 2018, it's not like they've been racking up new hits lately.
The younger siblings and nieces and nephews of Paramore fans since the beginning are listening to Billie Eilish and other pop artists now, and their older siblings and parents are listening pre-2000 indie rock, jam bands, Americana, or whatever they enjoyed when they were young
Avril Lavigne had much more ubiquitous hits than Paramore, and she closed Blue this year. Paramore may have done very well this year headlining at two mostly punk pop emo festivals, but you wouldn't necessarily take whomever's headlining Newport Folk, Rolling Loud, or Electric Daisy Carnival and book them to headline Boston Calling, either
You know who'd be a better choice to headline than Paramore and is even more relevant and a bigger draw right now? Olivia Rodrigo. She manages to bring rock and pop together in a way that sounds much fresher than stereotypical punk pop emo and her fanbase is as rabid as it gets.
They played dcu center in 2013 and sold it out. You have no idea what you're talking about
Setlist.fm lists nothing but smaller venues for Boston shows. It's as reliable a source of truth as anything short of a paid Pollstar subscription. (Plus, a lot of DCU shows have been half-arena shows where they didn't use the full capacity of the building. That may or may not have been the case here.)
Yes Florence was bigger than Paramore at one point, I don’t think anyone would disagree with that, but it’s pretty clear that Paramore is more relevant right now

Those are the venues she was playing on her debut album tour. If her second album is on the way next year, it makes sense that she'd be moving up in venue size. BTW, Anthem has variable capacity of 2,500 - 6,000 and Radio City seats just over 6K. She did two nights at each venue, with some larger amphitheaters peppered into her last tour. This was hardly a club or small ballroom tour from start to finish.

Cool I was there it was sold out and full of screaming girls who are all older now, still love Paramore and now have full time jobs with excess cash to spend at a music festival. Again to sum up what the other guy said pop punk is having a moment and guess who influenced all these artists? Lol Billie Eilish brought Paramore out at coachalla you don't think thats a "moment" Just take the L dude
I’ll summarize for you: pop punk is having a moment right now
Thank you. That's the first concrete reason anyone has given here as to why anyone might consider them to be a Boston Calling-level headliner. I can see how the combination of the MCR reunion, Mark Hoppus' recovery + Tom DeLonge returning to blink-182, and WWWY serving as a focal point might be the rising tide that lifts all boats, and I suppose that Paramore is big enough and active enough at the right time to be near the front of the pack to benefit from that moment. (In hindsight, this probably wasn't the best year for Fall Out Boy to focus upon the European run of the Hella Mega tour, with punk pop having that moment stateside.)
It's just odd, though, after booking artists who've headlined Fenway Park and Gillette Stadium, that they'd want to book someone so new to the arena circuit, especially after the editions that didn't happen for two years and the top line turmoil of 2022. Between the cancellations and the (sadly usual) weather, this last Boston Calling didn't seem like the triumphant return that we all were hoping for. Little to none of it was the fault of the promoters -- there's not much that you can do about injury, illness, and death impacting your lineup -- but it's not unreasonable that a lot of regular Boston Calling attendees are hoping that they knock it out of the park with their 2023 lineup.

According to the DCU spec sheet, seating capacity for concerts there ranges from just under 10K to just over 14.5K. That's a step above Agganis and a step below TD Garden.

Influencing an artist who goes on to great heights doesn't necessarily make you as popular at the artist you've influenced. If that was the case, The Replacements would have been headlining arenas on their reunion tour in 2014 (Billie Joe Armstrong acknowledged their influence upon his music by playing in the band on a bunch of their dates.)
If influencing an artist made you as popular as the artists you influenced, the MC5, the Stooges, Shuggie Otis, and the Velvet Underground all would have been arena headliners.
Getting acknowledgment from artists you've influenced may motivate some of their fans to check out your music, but it doesn't necessarily result in a huge and immediate spike in ticket sales and music purchases.
i still can't get over my man saying he'd rather have tucker carlson headline than paramore
Dude, you're from Texas. Greg Abbott is your governor and Ted Cruz is your senator. I'd be surprised if you weren't thrilled to see Tucker Carlson in a festival lineup.

Well, there's a bit of the old "Pot Kettle Black" in someone from a state that ranks near the bottom of everything, including education, calling anyone stupid.
