nothing concrete, just people throwing out names. The best info we have is who isn’t playing rather than who is at the moment
Yeah, given who we know isn't playing the list of potential (likely) headliners seems smaller than usual. Really thankful that Muse isn't playing this though
There are also acts that haven't released their 2023 US tour schedule that could be in play as well (I'm looking at you The Cure!!).
I'd be happy if we got 70% of the "Possible" artists listed in the first post. While not Metallica size as far as potential headliners, a Pearl Jam, Lizzo, Paramore top 3 would be appealing to a wide spectrum of fans and you could spend more on the undercard (i.e LCD Soundsystem, My Morning Jacket, etc). Or swap Paramore (move to close Red) for a larger headliner on that day (assume Sunday performance at BC) and you're good to go.
I can't remember who posted earlier up-thread that they spoke to someone involved with BC and they said they were excited for 2023's festival, but I would love to know if that's in comparison to this year, previous years, or just overall.

I really doubt LCD would be a sub
or even MMJ for Boston Calling
MMJ would definitely sub here, theyre not too big in Boston and when they headlined last time it was a much smaller fest. LCD on the other hand is def headline or bust. i dont see them taking any lower. i dont see them getting booked here either though

i doubt LCD would sign up to do anything but headline, but they couldn't sell out their string of Roadrunner shows this past spring so i dont think they're headlining here. they also kinda hate big shows which is why they keep doing multi-night runs at smaller venues. i love them, but they'd be a "bad"/underwhelming headliner. that being said, if they were to sign on as the fourth or fifth name on the lineup, i'd be incredibly excited.
I think (at least as far as i can tell) that MMJ is smaller than LCD and definitely wouldn't headline here. They'd be in that Goose spot closing Blue, which it seems like most people suspect Billy Strings has already locked in for 2023.

It gets boring looking at LCD Soundsystem on lineup posters, but it does not get boring witnessing them slay in the moment.
oh yeah, to clarify, i meant the reception to the announcement would be that it was a bad or underwhelming choice, which is mostly because i think they're "too small" to headline a major festival these days. but not the actual show itself, which would be awesome because it always is and they're amazing

The Cure would be phenomenal, didn't realize they said they have plans to tour the US in 2023. Would love to see them at BC
My fear is that Boston Calling will assume that they've got their melodic rock and roll bases covered in the top line with Paramore and specifically won't book a band like The Cure, opting instead for rap, pop, or metal in the other two spots.
(I wouldn't mind it, though, if the metal band turned out to be System of a Down, who haven't played Boston in over 20 years and haven't played Massachusetts in 10. They've been on my bucket list for a long time.)

MMJ has definitely taken a step down in popularity in Boston. I was so surprised when they didn't come close to selling out the 5K capacity pavilion a couple of months ago. According to the seating chart on Ticketmaster, there appeared to be around 1-2K unsold seats within a day or two of the show, as opposed to filling the Orpheum for two nights in the fall of 2015. (Capacity-wise, two Orpheum shows roughly equal one pavilion show.)
I chalk this up to a couple of things. After playing Boston three times in 2015, they then skipped the city for seven years. Sure, they had no way to know that a pandemic would come along and wind up keeping them out of a major market for much longer than they planned, but "out of sight, out of mind" was the end result. They may have lost some momentum locally. (It seems like so many bands influenced by Jim James' songwriting and vocal style have surpassed them in popularity, like Fleet Foxes, Goose, and Lord Huron. I hear a lot of the gentler side of MMJ in those artists, if not the One Big Holiday/Mahgeetah rocking side.)
I can't speak for anyone else on this, but I've lost some interest in them in the last couple of years, and haven't even listened to their last two albums yet.
They'd be perfectly slotted as a Blue or Red closer doing a 75 min. set.

I'm surprised The Cure have never played a Boston venue larger than Agganis, they sold that place out in seconds in 2016. I'd love to see them again as long as BC gives them an extra long headline slot.
The Cure was never really my thing, but sure i guess it would be cool to see them. I felt the same way about Metallica and NIN going into this year and ended up really really liking both sets.
That being said, i'd still rather have one of Rage, Strokes, Chili Peppers, or Pearl Jam. Assuming Paramore is headlining one night, i don't think they'd have MCR or Green Day, but i suppose it's possible since there was a lot of genre-similar headliners in 2020 and 2022. I'm still not totally ruling out Foo Fighters being back on the road next year, though it's probably unlikely. How have The Black Keys never played this thing? My dream pick in this "rock headliner" spot is Radiohead but that's not happening any time soon (or ever.)
Edit: kinda forgot about System Of A Down being back (mainly because i don't really like them) but they're headlining this new "Sick New World" single-day Vegas festival on May 13th, and haven't played in Massachusetts in a decade or so. i'd say they're in the running
I work(ed? Probably not going to continue next season) at Leader Bank Pavilion and when seeing the MMJ show my two main thoughts were "I thought they were popular enough to fill this venue" and "they would be a great blue stage closer"

So what overlap do people see with Sick New World. System of a Down would be a great third headliner, so Paramore/Strokes/System of A Down. Think they would fit the mold since my grandma LOVES chop suey.
Would love Death Grips to play not sure where they would be billed though, ho99o9 would be cool too. Also maybe give Fiddlehead a slot, they are from Boston too.

id def enjoy this top 3, SOAD would be pretty unique and unexpected

I would love Fiddlehead, HEALTH, Ministry (haven't seen them since 1992 Lolla (yes, I'm a bit on the older side)), Mr Bungle, Sisters of Mercy (although I've read that they sound like crap these days), Deftones, or System of a Down. I think the only overlap that we may get is 100 gecs, though.

I'm not from the area but isn't the Tweeter Center (whatever it's branded these days) bigger than Agganis if you count the lawn?

Agganis is about a third of the size of Mansfield
Mansfield = Great Woods, Tweeter Center, cable company whatever it is now

Yeah, the crowds at MMJ shows in Boston are unusually small.
They've played at the Orpheum, maybe like 5-6 years ago. Biggest was the Agganis NYE show in 2012.

It definitely is and tbh I always forget about that place. They've played there a lot but the last few tours have all been at Agganis
There's been three times where I had tickets for Death Grips, and it got canceled. Still haven't seen them yet.
i was lucky enough to see them at a coheadline w Ministry at the Palladium. I normally hate that venue and hate venturing out there but it couldnt have been more perfect for them, just pure raw energy. I left after their set and didnt see Ministry but that was all i needed. Would love to see them play either Roadrunner or close blue here.

Like The Strokes, it's the "Haven't played town in years" exception which makes them great headliners for Boston Calling. Neither band would be worth booking if they had done the Garden or Xfinity center within the last five years, but it's been ages for both of them.
i hope it isnt as much of a buttrock lineup this year but even so, if we get something similar to 2022 i wouldnt be opposed. had a blast this year despite a lackluster bottom 2 lines. Best case would be a return to 2017 and 2018 style booking. those were just beautiful
Are you literally claiming that more people know Misery Business than know Dog Days or Mr. Brightside? Seriously?
You're the one who's wrong on that point.
Mr Brightside is easily one of the biggest songs of all time so I won’t dispute that but Misery Business has been a bigger song than anything from Florence and I love Flo.
We wanted Rage Against The Machine. We get rage against Florence + The Machine.
