while making this I listened to a bunch of the stuff I haven't heard before and man, it was pretty rough. Especially Friday's undercard, it might be worse than last year's Friday undercard and that's saying something
also I will say this mock schedule is very optimistic with the conflicts, I can't have any real expectations for them not to put the good acts against each other

i really dont think they'll have blue stage closers opposite headliners, they'll be opposite red stage closers. so the timing is a little screwy. and like i mentioned before i think id swap the national and niall. otherwise this looks fairly realistic.
How would an expansion work? At the back of the soccer field, there's a sharp inline right next to the foot path, so where would you put extra people?
actually, I’m not even sure if they need to expand it, but at the very least booking acts that can fill that space with people is a good start. Goose was so empty closing blue last year, they need to be putting someone there that can attract an audience

Yep - listened to some as well and there's no variation.
Hey, sorry you missed this all female indie pop band (The Beaches) on Friday, why not try this all female indie pop band (The Aces) on Saturday. They sound alike, you'd almost think you're seeing the same band. We even put them at the same spot in the lineup to make it easier for you.
Heard you like bandits, so we're giving you a choice - Q-Tip or Blue Light. (OK, that's just a joke on the names, nothing more)
Oh, you like electro/synthpop? Let me introduce you to Chelsea Cutler, Zolita, Leon, Neemz, 070 Shake and Fletcher.
Last year's Friday undercard looks like a genius lineup compared to this. Backseat Lovers, Paris Texas, and Grandson put on great performances even if you aren't a fan of the music. Oliver Tree, though...oof.
I would agree there is some painfully similar artists across the few I have listened to, but at least off their Spotify numbers (which I get isn’t the best indicator) they are a bit bigger then I had expected
that coachella lineup makes me feel 1,000 years old and makes me feel significantly less bad about our lineup
It’s definitely a vibe and I generally understand why people are pumped, it will no doubt be a hell of a weekend, but just not my tastes. Would definitely pick Bonnaroo over it

the bonnaroo lineup is wayyyy better. sure there's a bunch of stuff i like on the coachella lineup, but there's always going to be because there's like a million bands there. overall i just dont get it. i've aged out apparently.

Yes and no - yes, the age thing, but no, because there are a few undercard acts that fit right into Boston Calling's wheelhouse, or what I thought was their wheelhouse.
Gorillaz, as mentioned above, would be a better headliner vs The Lumineers (cost or relationship with LN for this headliner?)
I can understand why EDM/Electronic acts are not usually represented at BC - no indoor/tent space and due to the sound ordinance, there isn't a possible later evening start for an electronic act to really showcase a light show, but The Chemical Brothers or Underworld would be a great get.
Not sure why BC pulled away from rap/hip-hop this year, but I would love to have had Pusha T and/or Saba. Growing up in VA, the VA Beach music scene was nuts with Clipse/Pusha T, Missy Elliot, Timbaland, Pharrell Williams/N.E.R.D./The Neptunes
Wet Leg, Sudan Archives, the Breeders (MA connection), Alex G, Weyes Blood, Ethel Cain would be great for BC (Sudan Archives unfortunately had her set canceled due to the rain).
But yeah, I think I've aged out too. None of the headliners do anything for me (and I like Frank Ocean).
It's almost like a music festival for 21 year old instagram models isn't tailoring their lineup to the music sensibilities of washed mid-30s white dudes from the northeast

Maren Morris might pull out of Boston Calling because she’s so disappointed at the moment and she’s a country star and she can play at some country music festivals instead of some rock and pop ones.

that's the problem, they're trying for both but aren't succeeding for either
lol that Coachella lineup is the best north american lineup ive ever seen. totally shits on every past boston calling lineup and most roo lineups. The more bostons music scene shifts the more i’m realizing this may not be the city for me

Yeah, I think if you aren’t super big on EDM or Pop Music it’s gonna leave you a bit wanting for something you a genuinely invested in. But that’s kinda the Coachella vibe so it totally makes sense

I'm happy you're happy with the Coachella lineup, but i don't think it's really Boston's fault that the Boston Calling lineup doesnt have more of that style music. The owners/organizers apparently decided to make it more of a rock/indie festival. I don't think it's indicative of the city. Boston gets plenty of these Coachella artists that you probably love when they tour the country, they just aren't incorporated into the 1 big festival here.
I wish the BC lineup was a bit more genre-diverse for sure, but Coachella has leaned SO hard into Gen Z music that i'll just never ever connect with, which upsets me because I think it means i'll never get to check it off my bucket list. Like, looking at just the headliner and first full line each day, i dont think i've ever actively listened to a single song by Bad Bunny, Burna Boy, Becky G, Metro Boomin, Blackpink, Rosalia, Suicideboys, The Kid Laroi, Labrinth, Underworld, Kali Uchis, Fisher+Chris Lake, A Boogie, or Jai Paul. That's 14 of the 25 "biggest" names. And of the remaining 11, i really would only be excited about seeing maybe 4 or 5 of them.

you've made the right call for about half of those acts but Underworld and Jai Paul are pretty niche and extremely rare electronic bookings

I don't know, Dance music acts consistently undersell in Boston even if they are big names, or play at Big Night Live when they headline festivals in other cities. Latin artists of various genres who play arenas in other cities often play the Wang theater here. For every rap or electronic artist that gets a roadrunner show there's two that skip Boston entirely. The closest thing we had to a legitimate electronic festival was shut down by the fucking cops the *day before*. Im not at all surprised about the BC lineup because the city has never shown respect for music that isn't band-based rock in my lifetime. I'm not surprised there are almost no artists of color either frankly given the booking of only rock and excluding anything that has elements of disco, rap, and club music.
