lol that Coachella lineup is the best north american lineup ive ever seen. totally shits on every past boston calling lineup and most roo lineups. The more bostons music scene shifts the more i’m realizing this may not be the city for me
Since you're more attentive to this sort of thing than I am: what is Boston's scene?
Edit: obviously EDM isn't as big up here

a lot of the acts in the bottom two lines are, also most artists who play ONCE venues. its mostly rock/punk/emo bands. NICE fest is also a good example. Bostons electronic scene unfortunately is unfortunately just big room EDM at Big Night Live and Middlesex and Infra get some interesting underground acts but only a fraction of what places like Nowadays in NYC does

I'm happy you're happy with the Coachella lineup, but i don't think it's really Boston's fault that the Boston Calling lineup doesnt have more of that style music. The owners/organizers apparently decided to make it more of a rock/indie festival. I don't think it's indicative of the city. Boston gets plenty of these Coachella artists that you probably love when they tour the country, they just aren't incorporated into the 1 big festival here.
I wish the BC lineup was a bit more genre-diverse for sure, but Coachella has leaned SO hard into Gen Z music that i'll just never ever connect with, which upsets me because I think it means i'll never get to check it off my bucket list. Like, looking at just the headliner and first full line each day, i dont think i've ever actively listened to a single song by Bad Bunny, Burna Boy, Becky G, Metro Boomin, Blackpink, Rosalia, Suicideboys, The Kid Laroi, Labrinth, Underworld, Kali Uchis, Fisher+Chris Lake, A Boogie, or Jai Paul. That's 14 of the 25 "biggest" names. And of the remaining 11, i really would only be excited about seeing maybe 4 or 5 of them.
I don't know, Dance music acts consistently undersell in Boston even if they are big names, or play at Big Night Live when they headline festivals in other cities. Latin artists of various genres who play arenas in other cities often play the Wang theater here. For every rap or electronic artist that gets a roadrunner show there's two that skip Boston entirely. The closest thing we had to a legitimate electronic festival was shut down by the fucking cops the *day before*. Im not at all surprised about the BC lineup because the city has never shown respect for music that isn't band-based rock in my lifetime. I'm not surprised there are almost no artists of color either frankly given the booking of only rock and excluding anything that has elements of disco, rap, and club music.
holy shit, i forgot the name but i think i remember that fest. what was it called again? i never knew fucking cops shut it down. bpd is incredibly corrupt and brutal so im not surprised

Also not my scene but a lot of my friends in into the local Heavy Music scene, Converge and Lingua Ignota (from Providence I think though, just an hour away) as examples

Boiler room just last year. I might be using "shut it down" because it still happened at a much worse venue but the cops pulled their permit for ink block at the last fucking minute

And they haven't even dropped any names yet for The Stage at Suffolk Downs. I suspect that almost everyone that any of us wanted to see close Blue or Red, but didn't show up in the lineup, will play there this summer.

the blue stage closers are the best part of this lineup, assuming it’s The National, The Flaming Lips, and King Gizz
Say what you want about the lineup - lack of genre diversity, Saturday, on paper, looking like it shit the bed - but I wonder if budget played a big factor in the lineup. I'm sure Paramore and Lumineers are cheaper than Foo Fighters and probably cheaper than NIN and Metallica last year, but depending on when/if the sale to C3/LN took place (talks and finalized), I imagine there were conversations about the amount of debt C3 would take on or what the 2023 budget should be (reduce the operating budget) prior to the close of the sale and C3 taking over. That might explain the bump in local artists (15 last year - 18 this year) and more seemingly smaller national acts. Also may explain the introduction of the GA+ tier and what seems like a higher VIP/Platinum starting price.
Either way, there are some great performers on Friday and Sunday and I'm sure I will discover new acts that impress me throughout the weekend.

And I'm here to remind you Of the mess you left when you went away It's not fair to deny me Of the cross I bear that you gave to me You, you, you oughta know

here's my theory:
we know that Live Nation is now involved in some way, and I saw some talk about how Live Nation took over the booking at a certain point and onboarded all the Crash Line bookings that had already been made. To me, there's a pretty obvious distinction in what was booked by LN and what was booked before LN took over. The budget stuff all makes sense because they booked the laziest cheapest shit they could find to fill the rest of the undercard. The end result is this mess of a lineup, with a few interesting higher up bookings and a bunch of depressingly boring bookings throughout the undercard.

I think you nailed it. So, the question then becomes, is this what we should expect moving forward or is this a transition year and we can expect something similar to 2017/2018 where buzzy national acts at the time like Pup, Lucy Dacus, Hiss Golden Messenger, Zola Jesus, Big Thief, etc are playing at 3PM vs the local acts (though some are good) and, as you perfectly stated, "the laziest cheapest shit they could find."
Lets hope for the former and not the latter. Boston Calling needs an identity and it doesn't need to be expensive headliners and a scrap heap of an undercard.
Of course, the first thing you notice when you see the poster is the top six billed performers and to say that I wasn't happy about those six names is an immense understatement.
The Foo Fighters are probably the only artist I'm excited about seeing among the six. I've never really been a big fan and don't anticipate streaming any of their albums before the festival, but I watched the webcast of the London tribute show and they were great. I'll probably wind up enjoying Alanis Morissette a lot more than I anticipated (although I may opt for Noah Kahan if they conflict.)
I actually don't know the YYY's fairly well; they're not the 00's NYC band I had hoped to see on the poster.
As for The Lumineers, the only "Hey Ho" I want to hear at Boston Calling would be coming from the Zombie Ramones.
I'm not a QOTSA fan at all. I'll take a band that takes its cues from Lennon & McCartney over blues-derived riff-o-rama any day of the week.
I'd actually rather see Paramore than at least two of the other top six, which tells you what I think about the top six in general.
On the other hand...
Forgetting about where everyone is on the poster for a minute, tell me that I'm going to be seeing The National, The Flaming Lips, and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and the lineup seems like a win to me. Throw in The Beaches, Bleachers, Maren Morris, The Walkmen, and The Linda Lindas, and that's all a plus.
However, there's going to be a huge clusterduck on Sunday. Nobody's going to be able to see all of King Gizzard, Bleachers, Maren Morris, The Walkmen, and The Linda Lindas, between direct conflicts and time spent walking across the grounds.
The biggest surprise for me is that they're bringing back artists who played last year, mostly locals.
The thing to keep in mind here is that a lot of the artists we may have individually and collectively hoped to see in the top few lines may wind up filling out the calendar at The Stage at Suffolk Downs.
I'm probably going to go for regular GA here. I don't think that the GA+ delivers that much more value for the cost, and I'd need to like the poster a lot more to spring for VIP.
My biggest question here is whether the presence of the top two names each day in larger font and set apart from the rest of the the day's performers means that there won't be unopposed headliners and that each of those two artists will be performing at the same time. Any number of stage realignments could make this possible, especially use of the stadium
I think the artists rebooked from last year were all ones who ended up getting canceled or half sets from the rain on saturday (celisse, ali mcguirk and coral moons).
I suspect that the lineup might look a lot better to a lot of us if the artists on Sunday's undercard were spread out throughout the festival. If we had just seen an old school Boston Calling poster which didn't even list the specific days, we might be raving about the lineup (not yet aware that Sunday would be so stacked that there would be no way of seeing everybody interesting. Except for 070 Shake, I have some interest, ranging from good to off the charts, in seeing everyone from Bleachers at #3 through Brutus at #11 that day, which obviously isn't going to happen.)
Also, echoing what @mfdoomlikedbcooper posted, we can't underestimate the psychological impact of the ugliest festival poster and site design known to man upon our perceptions of the lineup. It's so bad. ("Yeah, I love that band...but not in that font.")

interesting tidbit, redditor said they were told: “no music will overlap with the headliners ever.” by an email when they asked whether gizz and qotsa were overlapping. so blue will be finished before 7:30 each night i think. guess its a benefit of them opting for dual headliners

Pretty curious the wording on that question/response and if they truly consider that second line "Headliners". Or maybe that means they are doing opposing headliners this year? I cant imagine they are gonna shut down the blue that early.
These guys must still be stun locked from when they had Chance and Sigur Ros overlap

on one hand i’m happy to be able to potentially see all of Gizz, Paramore and qotsa but that sounds like a nightmare for overcrowding

Forget about the site and poster design, when headliners run unopposed, there's really only one headliner...whomever is closing the evening.
Unless the person explicitly said that the rule applied each day to the second billed act, you really can't consider them to be headliners.
Also, Goose and Metallica overlapped by ten minutes last year, so what they told you was an exaggeration.

This was apparently the text from the email exchange, certainly seems to hint to the top two being considered headliners and being unopposed:
Q: Hi! I’m wondering if:
1. will the headliners play unopposed? 2. will the headliners play at the same time (ex: Paramore & Queens of the Stoneage play at the same time, so it’s only possible to see one of them).
A: 1) Yes, no music will overlap with the headliners ever. 2) This seems like the same question as above, the headlining acts will not overlap.

Wouldn't that mean that Queens of the Stone Age close Red and Paramore close Green? Doesn't mean that the Blue closer isn't playing at the same time as Red closer. So, if the 1st act on the 2nd line is the Blue closer (The National, Noah Kahan, Bleachers), then they would play at the same time as the Red Stage closer (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Alanis, QotSA).
But looking at the 2022 poster, that logic (3rd name is Blue closer) is thrown out the window. Avril was 4th (if you include the headliner), King Gizz was 3rd, and Goose was 5th. Either way, I still think Blue closer will conflict with Red closer.

Yeah, the way I’m reading this is HL#1 would be closing out the Green and HL#2 would be closing out the Red, but if “No music will overlap with the headliners” and both acts are considered headliners, it doesn’t sound like there would be counter programming on the Blue during the HL#2 set on the Red

You're probably right, if that means that I can see The National and Yeah Yeah Yeahs on Friday and King Gizz and QotSA on Sunday, then no complaints here.
I haven't received my presale code text yet. Has anyone recceived it already?
I just received the code being sent to rollovers via email, not text. There's a special link to buy at 9 am for the rollovers. It has a personalized URL, so there's no way to share it here.
