Ticket prices already went up. GA up $20 per ticket and GA+ up $30 per ticket. Guess the pre-sale sold out.
i saw that. ugh i really wanna see yyys i hope prices drop before. $100 even on stubhub would do it for me
I think you are gonna be left wanting if you are waiting for a $80 drop of the current face + fees plus what ever else is lost by the seller going through Stubhub. Plus that’s probably the most likely day to sell out, especially if this holds as the Foo Fighters first show back on tour
I just don’t see secondary prices cratering as much this year, I could see someone taking a bit of a loss on their $299 3 day ticket, which would look good in Apr when BC is asking for 350 + fees, but still
Negotiate a 2 festival contract with The Lumineers that lowers the per headliner expense to less than separately paying for The Lumineers at 1 (Shaky Knees) and The Strokes at the other (Boston Calling). 2023 edition of BC is a cost cutting exercise.
sure but in theory they should already have paid for at least part of the booking fee for the Strokes, and the tour rooting looked like it worked fine for the Saturday, where they were booked last year.
To me, it feels like the YYY booking was a second choice "00's NYC indie rock" booking.
Yup- "Boston Calling is produced by Boston Calling Events LLC (BCE), which is owned in part by Boston-based Crash Line Productions and Austin, TX based C3 Presents" Formal press release here
I wonder if Crash Line is still listed due to the timing of the close of the acquisition and there were already finalized negotiations done, or if it truly is a joint ownership.
There's a good chance that Live Nation/C3 only bought MSG's stake in the festival, which I recall reading was a slight majority ownership. (BTW, that was a terrible press release. It read like ad copy, while press releases are supposed to read more like news articles, so that print and online publications can run the press release "as is" as a news article.)
I'm wondering if this opens the door to new synergies, with a concert promotion group that runs a lot of local venues now in partnership with Crash Line. (MSG owns a few venues in Boston, but they don't book the shows for them.) Maybe we see a bunch of Boston Calling artists drop local headlining dates at MGM, HoB, LB Pavilion, etc. right after the festival.
I'm just hoping that Bowery Boston drops the first group of shows at SaSD very soon. Maybe they've been waiting for BC and IBD to announce first, and a lot of their names could go a long way to assuage any disappointment people might have over who didn't show up in the recent festival announcements.
The reason that we see the top six artists all bolded on the poster and website as headliners is because after having booked RHCP, Metallica, Foo Fighters, RATM, and NIN in the past few years, a top line including both Lumineers and Paramore would have seemed like a step down in size. By bumping up the second billed act each day to top billing, too, that may offset any perception of downgrading the lineup.
It also gives you a poster where three out of six top billed acts are female fronted, rather than one out of three.
Just a tip of the cap to the quality of the conversation in the Boston Calling threads here. So many of the takes in Reddit's Boston Calling community are so very bad. Regardless of whomever the festival books, there are plenty of the usual "not enough diversity in the lineup" posts, both in terms of the demographic composition of the performers and the genres presented. Someone actually used the "white guys with guitars" cliche, which literally doesn't apply to half the lineup, especially if you exclude acts like YYY and Paramore from that assessment. The worst take was someone who criticized the lack of musical diversity in the lineup compared to Governors Ball, which has a lot less rock in its lineup than Boston Calling has pop and rap.
Plus, a lot of the diversity posts conveniently ignore all of the Latin, Asian, Arabic, and LGBTQ+ performers in the lineup, preferring to define diversity quite narrowly.

Overall, this year's lineup has a lot of female fronted or solo female artists, but I agree with your last point. I also think the top 2 bolded each day is to hide the rather weak undercard (Purely subjective, but in year's past I've looked up artists that I didn't know and enjoyed a lot of them. That's not the case this year.)

I do have the say on the diversity point that they completely failed there. Even if it is cool that they grab a couple diverse acts, none of them have any kind of prominent billing. The headliners and top line of every day combined has 1 person of color on it. That is an absolute embarrassment
If you’re booking the 2024 lineup, who’s 3 undercard acts you’d grab right now? Gimme Yves Tumor, Nu Genea, Hatchie
Like those 3.
Not sure who is releasing albums at the end of this year/early 2024, but give me Young Fathers, U.S. Girls, and Wednesday. If we were to do older acts/reunions, throw in Drop Nineteens and Slowdive.
Ok, obviously hard to do just 3 - but throw in Little Simz as well.

If by top line, you're including the top six artists, that's at least two (Karen O and Pat Smear). There could be someone in Alanis Morissette's band who brings that number up to three.
The catch is that if they're leaning more towards various types of rock, as well as pop, as the main focus of the festival, they're aren't a lot of artists of color who could fill that spot. Tina Turner's retired and whenever Rihanna gets back on the road, she's likely going to play football stadiums again. There are a ton of Black artists playing various types of rock and folk, and they've done a good job of booking them at Boston Calling, but it's neither the festival's fault nor that of the artists that they aren't hugely popular and higher up on the poster. When I look at this year's lineup, I see every effort made to include minority performers, while staying within the parameters of the types of music that Boston Calling wants to present.
I tried to give some saturday artists a chance like Noah Kahan, Mt. Joy and Fletcher but goddamn that day is the most boring, white bread, cookie cutter day theyve ever had. and most of Friday suffers from the same problem aside from the top 3.
Sunday eclipses the other two by far in terms of sheer quality and quantity of unique and interesting bookings. out of all the acts ive listened to playing Sunday, the only ones i’m not interested in seeing are Bleachers, Juice, Ali Mcguirk and Workman Song. I just wish i could understand the mindset of the talent bookers this year because theyve never had a daily lineup this uneven in the history of the fest

The frontman of Workman Song could be Hozier's stunt double. They look that much alike, probably due to Workman Song Guy showing his barber a photo of Hozier and saying, "I want my hair and beard to look exactly like this."
I was doing a mini-dive into some of the Sunday undercard artists, and the day is so strong that it's almost as if Boston Calling was trolling us by giving us too much good music in the middle of the lineup. There's not going to be any way to see all of The Walkmen, The Linda Lindas, Wunderhorse, Genesis Owusu, and Brutus. (For everyone who's been complaining on Reddit about musical diversity and lamenting the lack of rap and R&B at Boston Calling, Genesis Owusu is playing exactly what they want to hear. Apparently, though, he's not a big enough name brand to quell the complaints.)
I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that I'm not going to be able to see Maren Morris, who should be going head to head with King Gizzard, but I'd rather see her with The Highwomen, anyway.
I suspect that while King Gizzard and Bleachers won't actually overlap, it will be one of those situations where you've got 0-5 minutes to get from one end of the grounds to the other between their sets.
The lineup is so good that day that's it's almost as if they're trolling us with Sunday's conflicts, in light of the much weaker undercards on Friday and Saturday.
I know that we're still months away from the schedule drop, but I kind of want to rip off the band-aid now, see what the conflicts are and then plan my listening accordingly.

I figured out how to avoid scheduling conflicts this year. Some of the artists can join forces and play a single set together. Imagine the possibilities:

What's most disappointing to me is the lack of depth on the lineup. Really falls off on the bottom half of each day. Usually I'll go through and discover a few new artists on the middle/bottom lines but I really haven't found anything on here.
Anyway, got tickets for Fri & Sat so looking forward to it either way.

its just so incredibly boring. I was hoping at least for a smidge of electronic music or something super cool like Pavement higher up on the bill. but nothing
Yeah, I'd like to see the schedule, too. If Foos, YYYs or The National overlap, I'll be pissed. Friday has the weakest undercard for my tastes- but- I've recently heard good songs by Talk and Boston's GA-20 on satellite, Philly and Pittsburgh radio. Can any Boston-area folks shed light on other good local bands on the lineup?
Other thoughts: - Maybe one reason the undercard looks weak is because they display 2 headliners each day? - I previously knew only one song by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but I really like their latest album and am looking forward to seeing them live. If you're on the fence, here's a recent festival set to watch while we wait:

Well, that may be due to the fact that the last five or six acts listed each day are the same local bands playing in clubs and at free outdoor summer concert series around the Boston area. A lot of festivals take this approach and no one from out of town recognizes a single name on the bottom half or third of the poster.
If you could swap Boston Calling's Friday lineup with this one (keeping the same local artists at the bottom of the BC poster for that day to keep the number of performers relatively even), would you do it?
I'm more interested in seeing Foo Fighters than any of the other five headliners and I really like The National, but I'd definitely make the trade.

I'd love to have Angel Olsen there, but no, I wouldn't swap lineup for lineup. Especially looking forward to The National and LEON that day.

I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere in this thread, haven't gone through it all, but I'm looking at going Saturday/Sunday and am wondering what we think schedule conflicts will look like.
I love Boston (haven't been in 10 years) and really just want to see Yoshimi (since Roo didn't book it - dumb) and then Gizzard/QOTSA on Sunday and my wife would want to see Lumineers/Alanis.
