I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere in this thread, haven't gone through it all, but I'm looking at going Saturday/Sunday and am wondering what we think schedule conflicts will look like.
I love Boston (haven't been in 10 years) and really just want to see Yoshimi (since Roo didn't book it - dumb) and then Gizzard/QOTSA on Sunday and my wife would want to see Lumineers/Alanis.
Thanks!
so theres 3 stages, red, green and blue. green is the main stage, red is similar and they alternate acts throughout the day with the headliner closing the green stage and the 2nd name on the days closes red. During this, the blue stage, which is about a 10 minute walk from the red and green stages has acts playing there that conflict with both red and green acts. however, they almost never conflict with a headliner and havent since 2017

Assuming, though, that only the top billed artist each day will perform unopposed, I'd guess that The Flaming Lips will probably conflict with Mt. Joy and King Gizzard will most likely conflict with Maren Morris, judging from their positions in the lineup. The likely QotSA conflict is Bleachers. Boston Calling hasn't always followed the precise poster order in the schedule, however. Goose turned out to be the Blue Stage closer on Sunday last year, although they were a few spots down from that on the poster. Alanis Morissette will probably conflict with Noah Kahan. You'll probably be able to see her and the Lumineers, but you'll need to make your way from one end of the grounds to the other, because I can't imagine that they're not running Mt. Joy -> Noah Kahan -> The Lumineers on the twin Green and Red Stages next to each other, and wrapping up the day on Blue with The Flaming Lips -> Alanis Morissette, with her set ending within a few minutes of The Lumineers start time.
My fear is that Gizz is going to close Blue and get that extra set time (1:15 vs 1 hr - similar to what they had originally in 2022) and that will conflict with QotSA closing Red.
I wouldn't be surprised if The Flaming Lips close Blue. They are doing Yoshimi in its entirety. That album runs just over 47 minutes. You add any extended jams, conversations, Wayne Coyne rolling around the crowd in his bubble, and it could go well over an hour.
I really don’t see how they’re dealing with QOTSA vs Gizz without Gizz subbing Green which would suck hard
No, QotSA could be headlining Blue with Gizz right before them. With Paramore headlining, you could do a straight run of the rock artists alternating on Red/Green with the more pop oriented artists on Blue, or do the reverse, and it works either way.
The likely conflict is between Bleachers and QotSA, with Gizz on before QotSA, whether that's at one end of the grounds or the other.

TFL aren't closing Blue. It makes more sense for Alanis Morissette to close Blue, because it would be ridiculous to have anything other than a Mt. Joy to Noah Kahan to The Lumineers run on Green/Red, given the stylistic fit.
What no one's considering is that maybe the twin headliners on the poster each day, which they've never done before, is meant to signify who's closing the day at each end of the grounds.
Nice to see them debunk the "not enough women in the lineup" myth here, but they lean into the "not enough overall diversity" BS, which isn't true either once you look into the artists and discover that *many* of them have Asian, Black, Latin, and LGBTQ members.

we ask this every year but when was the last time the second highest act on a day didn't close red? Alanis on red into Lumineers works fine, Flaming Lips vs Alanis sucks since it's the only 2 interesting acts on the day but it also is fine stylistically

Accidentally thought the Shaky Knees thread was this one cause of the title and got excited with the announcement there would be more acts added tomorrow for Shaky Knees. Anyone know if Boston Calling adds any additional acts or is the lineup set once they release it?

they've never added anything new, only replacements for dropouts

But why not put the day closing run of three very folky acts at the same end of the grounds? It doesn't make sense not to do that.
And what makes you think that it's Flaming Lips vs. Alanis? It's likely Noah Kahan vs. Alanis, judging from the poster order. The day most likely to break that order is Friday, with Niall Horan closing Blue and National -> YYY -> Foos on Green/Red.

Noah Kahan makes far more sense playing the same stage as The Lumineers rather than across the grounds. Have you seen BC's social media? Everyone getting a Saturday ticket is getting one for Lumineers, Noah, and Mt. Joy

Yes, I'm suggesting that it's likely that the day will end with Mt. Joy -> Noah Kahan -> Lumineers on Green/Red, with The Flaming Lips -> Alanis Morissette on Blue. No guarantee that they're doing this, but it makes the most sense.

this lineup just makes me feel so sad. why did they have to take it in such a boring direction
I don't consider a lineup with Foo Fighters, The National, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, The Flaming Lips, Bleachers, The Walkmen, Wunderhorse, The Linda Lindas, The Beaches, and Genesis Uwusu to be boring. I haven't heard much of Celisse or Joy Oladokun, but both have been getting rave reviews.
The biggest problem with the lineup is the day to day imbalance, with a stacked Sunday undercard, and weaker daily lineups on Fri and Sat.
More nuanced reply: After the 2020 and 2022 posters, only Foo Fighters seem as huge among the 2023 top six as were listed on those recent posters. I'm sure that, like Sunday last year with Metallica, the Foo Fighters will move a ton of one-day tickets. But neither The Lumineers nor Paramore seem as big as FF, RHCP, Metallica, or NIN. (While they are as popular as The Strokes, The Strokes are only a great Boston Calling headliner if it's their first local show since 2006. Once they've returned after that, they're no longer a bucket list band for local fans.)
Swap Mumford & Sons for The Lumineers and Green Day or Blink-182 for Paramore (all of whom are on the road this year) and they'd be selling more tickets.

I just wish this fest still booked Coachella headliners and subs like 2017-2019.
If it were more in that style, I think something like:
Foo Fighters - Gorillaz - The Strokes Paramore - Yeah Yeah Yeahs - QOTSA Boygenius - The National - Blondie Charli XCX - Pusha T - Remi Wolf
would have been far more plausible but instead we got a mix of LN fodder and a handful of interesting acts scattered throughout. Its just so much smaller than it was before
i know ive bellyached a lot abt this lineup but damn its frustrating to see the talent pool available and end up with this monstrosity
I do like this year's lineup a lot more than what we actually got last year (after COVID-19 and/or an outstanding warrant took out the two artists I was most excited to see.)
I loved Goose, liked Glass Animals a lot, and reasonably enjoyed Japanese Breakfast (Granted, I sat out Saturday due to the weather). The only thing special about Friday was being at a music festival again. Barring cancellations and/or the now-usual "day absolutely ruined by weather of biblical proportions," I expect to hear a lot more good-to-great music this year than last.
So hopefully this puts a fire under C3/LN/Crash Line/whoever to right the ship a bit for 2024. I'm still of the belief that outside of the top 4/5 on Friday/Saturday (and all of Sunday), the lineup was built with an eye towards low cost acts to reap a quick profit during a transition year and that next year will be back to what we love about the festival. Hell, one of the acts on Friday is playing Bamboozle which is flaunting it's no big $ headliner/acts as its calling card!
If Suffolk Downs proves to be a great spot to pull in events like this and possible future festivals, then management will have to step it up to remain relevant.
Here's another "wouldja trade lineups" hypothetical. Sure, I *really* want to see King Gizzard, but if they don't play a one-hour set at Boston Calling, maybe they wind up playing somewhere else in town for 3-6 hours this year.
Whether it's an outstanding warrant or something else altogether, I'm completely convinced that The Strokes have decided to never play Boston again for some reason, and that no one in the band actually had COVID last year. How does a NYC band go 17 years and counting without playing the second-closest major metropolitan area, which is only four hours by tour bus from your home base?

Could just be that they don't like Boston crowds. Jack White hasn't played in Philadelphia since 2006 for that reason iirc
