They've always done a good job of figuring out who's on the rise, and booking them before they became really big. Back before they booked anyone who was a present arena or ballpark headliner, they managed to book Lorde, Childish Gambino, and 21 Pilots at the same edition before any of them were arena headliners.
in retrospect sept 2014 was really amazing, Neutral Milk Hotel, Lorde, Gambino, Future Islands, Sky Ferreira, Nas x Roots, Replacements etc. I only went friday but i really wish i did the weekend
I loved that year. Still gutted about Volcano Choir

I can't believe that I walked out on The National a half hour into their set that year. I just hadn't *gotten* them yet; that would take a while to kick in. In 2018, I made sure that I didn't miss a minute of their Red Stage set.

Other than the two Homecoming sets, that might be my favorite set by them ever
Just a reminder that Alanis Morissette is at Boston Calling this weekend and she's good!
She better be if i'm going to skip Yoshimi for her!
My least favorite conflict of the weekend. I've got to do Flaming Lips again, having seen the original Yoshimi tour at the Royale, and there's a strong visual component to their live shows. Best use of props since Spinal Tap recreated Stonehenge onstage.
In a throwback to the Kevita kombucha booth at the first couple of Harvard editions, Jersey Mike's will be giving away free subs or samples at a kiosk this weekend. Danny DeVito not included.
yeah flips and alanis dont make saturday worth it enpugh for me with the rest of that lineup. esp considering you can only see one of those artists
I've been listening to Noah Kahan's Stick Season in the last few days and really like it. He's gone from "Why bother?" to "Must see" very quickly.
I'm actually looking forward to Kahan's set. Really loving Stick Season and he just released a live video of him doing Jason Isbell's "If We Were Vampires" with Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers, so I hope that happens on Saturday.
I honestly just hope they go a bit more genre diverse next year. i understand they’ll want to keep this americana/indie folk trend going with how well saturday sold but i’d like them to throw a bone to those of us who preferred the pre pandemic lineups lol

One interesting aspect for me this weekend will be everyone's setlists. A few artists are just starting their tour so I'm not sure what to expect from their sets which kind of sucks on one hand, but also makes it more intriguing.
This will be Alanis's first date on her upcoming tour and I'm sure it'll be great regardless but the order will be different and/or have new additions. The National have only done a couple of shows on their new leg since thier new album dropped, and those have been in the same cities so they've switched up their songs quite a bit so far. So who knows what to expect from them. Should be interesting tho.

Are the Lumineers really that popular now? Or is it Alanis? That is not the day I'd figure would be sold out. I was tempted to come up for Sunday, but that schedule at the end of the night is awful. I would have wanted to see Walkmen-KG-QOTSA. All three essentially conflicting was a bummer.

if they weren’t playing BC they would be playing Fenway
Sunday is kind of baffling in that they have both Gizz and Walkmen who are pretty big draws for non-headliners, playing their first Boston shows in years, and nothing really similar to either of them on their day that justifies spending $150 (and I LOVE gizz).
It's probably too unrealistic to expect that next year would have some windmill scene rep like Squid or BCNR, some bands who were great at previous callings like Osees and Shame, maaaaybe some stuff like Covet and Model/Actriz. The Interrupters would be a great Blue closer too

I'm one of the few fans of them around these parts and still don't know how they're as big as they are considering their genre/style.

Throw in Wunderhorse, The Linda Lindas, and Brutus, and you have an interesting run of guitar rock leading to Gizz and The Walkmen. They're not exactly the same, but nobody's like King Gizzard and The Walkmen play that prototypical NYC 00's guitar rock, and how many other bands are there besides The Strokes and Interpol which do that?
The idea is to have enough things which are compatible enough with each other that the pieces all fit together, without subjecting people to eight hours of music that sounds almost exactly alike. Pop fans can also work their way through 070 Shake, Bleachers, Maren Morris, and Paramore, and get a day they'll like, but one full of artists that tilt the pop in various directions, whether country, R&B, or rock.
basically a confirmation it will remain rock focused for the time being. hopefully its more of a shaky type lineup next year
I'll wave the flag for the idea that if you only have two stages active at a time, you can't be as genre diverse as Bonnaroo, Lolla, ACL, or Coachella. You wind up with dead zones where people might have 2-3 hours without anything they'd like to see.
Also, sometimes you get genre diversity, but if it's not in the form of well-known performers at the top of the poster, people say it's not there. 070 Shake and Genesis Owusu do very interesting things under the general umbrella of R&B, but since they're not huge stars, they're not entering the conversation. But they're there.

Xfinity Center or TD Garden, sure, but they'd need a strong #2 to draw well at Fenway.
Also Noah Kahan completely sold out xfinity center in September. hes def moving a lot of tix for sat
According to the Consequence article, he recently moved to Watertown, which makes sense since it's tough for an internationally touring musician to live too far from a major airport. Even getting to NYC for a Fallon appearance is a major trek from rural Vermont.
This also likely means that over the course of a year, he'll probably show up onstage as a special guest during someone's encore or do a guest spot at Passim, when he's in town. (I've seen Peter Wolf do this too many times, turning Springsteen and Costello encores into blues covers spotlights.)
I better run into Noah Kahan on my daily dunks run or I’m canceling him
Noah Kahan in a backwards green Red Sox hat and a Gronkowski jersey yelling at the people behind the counter at Anna's Taqueria because they told him he can't smoke in there
