just wanted to reiterate that none of this matters because they’re probably just running the killers or twenty one pilots back
they havent repeated a headliner at the new site yet fwiw. ones they have brought back from past editions were either demoted or subs again like ODESZA
Well Nine Inch Nails was a repeat technically, hehehehe
buddy Boston Calling is a small regional festival, people don't really "travel" for it. Paramore is a fine booking for them because there are probably plenty of people who live within two hours of Boston who are likely to go to Boston Calling anyway who would say "oh paramore is playing, that's neat/fine/cool." A fest like BC doesn't book acts to try and entice people from 7 hours away.
Agreed, it's not primarily a destination festival, and maybe some of us here (like myself) overestimate the number of people who do travel to Boston Calling because a bunch of people who care enough about music festivals to spend time on a message board about them probably aren't representative of festival goers as a whole.
Paramore would be a fine booking as a Blue or Red closer, but whether you're looking to move tickets to area residents or attract people from afar, the bigger the name, the better. If you want to share a headliner with Adjacent, Green Day is the better choice because more people know and like Green Day than know and like Paramore.

I'm assuming King Gizz is coming back as a blue headliner, hopefully BC can get some other up and coming bands in that scene like that like Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Tropical Fuck Storm or Acid Dad

A Tropical Fuck Storm into King Gizz blue stage lineup would be *chef's kiss*. Maybe King Gizz could start their set with Satanic Slumber Party with TFS.
I think we can count on 1, if not all, of the following being on the undercard:
Jockstrap Sorry Dry Cleaning Just Mustard
Jockstrap, Just Mustard, and Sorry have east coast dates in November that exclude Boston, but hit NYC, Philly, DC, Toronto. Dry Cleaning has east coast dates at the end of January/start of February with no Boston show, but NYC, Philly, and DC.
All 4 have been on the hype train over the last few years and all have recent releases.

I bet we get idles and that’s it
Yes, there's a strong chance for Idles, but why don't you think any of the above will be there? Knowledge or guessing?
they don’t book bands like that anymore, since aaron dessner left the booking team i wouldnt expect anything like that
That makes sense.
like id love that to happen dont get me wrong but its best to temper your expectations with this fest. if it were pre 2019 BC i’d say that makes them seem pretty likely but now its a crapshoot. I could potentially see them booking like black midi though, because they sell out shows here

Could be misremembering but they never booked bands like that to begin with. I think something like Tropical Fuck Storm was always a bit out there for BC.

You're probably right. I thought with past lineups that included Shame, Thee Oh Sees, and Deerhoof, that those artists wouldn't be too out of place from what we've had before.

Hmm interesting point and Osees were actually post-Dessner I think. I do think bands like them and Deerhoof have been going at it for years and as a result are more likely to be booked. I'd love to see more weird acts at BC.

dessner left after 2019, 2020 and 2022 are the only post dessner lineups we’ve seen

I'd make the argument that Superorganism is more out there than Tropical Fuck Storm and they were booked in 2019. I don't think there's any reason why they wouldn't get booked.
what i meant from my earlier comment is thati don’t see acts like Jockstrap, Dry Cleaning or Just Mustard getting booked. a psych rock band like TFS i could see considering we’ve gotten OSees and Pond

Did not know Dessner stayed on for that long, I assumed he left once they moved locations. Thanks for the info! Personally think TFS are more out there than other bands mentioned but I'd love to be wrong because they fucking rock and would melt some faces at BC. Very stoked to see them next January locally.
If you want to share a headliner with Adjacent, Green Day is the better choice because more people know and like Green Day than know and like Paramore.
Green Day is probably three times the cost and is coming off a lot of U.S. dates the past few years.
But Green Day hits the sweet spot for a multi-genre festival headliner: an artist that not only has a dedicated fan base, but has also achieved the sort of broad popularity and a large number of casual fans for whom their name on the top line will sell tickets. (By the time Boston Calling rolls around, it will have been almost two years since their last Boston show, too.)
This thread has turned into a really awful movie that you cant stop watching. I feel 10x dumber every tine i read this thread but for some reason continue to do so.
To follow up on a few of the recent comments...
1) Green Day isn't playing Adjacent 2) Chili Peppers were the only act to play on the main stage after Paramore at ACL.
We've reached the point of this argument where we are just making things up on the go to help try and make our point, nice.
1) So, I was mistaken about the other act in the Adjacent top line, that doesn't invalidate my point that, if you want to book a punk pop act in the top line, Green Day (who are already showing up in 2023 festival lineups on top) would be a better headliner than Paramore.
2) True, they were the 2nd from the last act up on the main stage, but in the 3rd last time slot of the day, with Marcus Mumford, Goose, and Zhu all playing on various stages after Paramore wrapped up, and Kacey Musgraves playing opposite RHCP. (Maybe the reason they outdrew the Chili Peppers is that more people wanted to see Musgraves than wanted to see Robert Glasper or James Blake, who were opposite Paramore on weekend two, with a similar dynamic on weekend one, only with 6lack instead of Blake during the first weekend. Musgraves is now an arena headliner in her own right.)
To get off of the burning train real quick, I have a couple of questions for you BC vets.
1. When would we expect the Early Bird sale to start? I purchased this year's tickets on November 9th of last year. So, can we expect similar timeframe?
2. My daughter and I had GA tickets for this year's festival and didn't have any issues getting close or close enough to the stages, outside of Sunday for Modest Mouse/Glass Animals/Weezer as the grounds were packed for Metallica. For those who had VIP tickets, do you feel they were worth it with the expanded VIP areas?
In all fairness to burning trains, they can help you get to Boston Calling.

Disq is getting a ton of buzz now. Heard one song, really liked it, planning on checking out more of their music.
They either just played or are just about to play Brighton Music Hall, but Boston Calling often books artists who aren't near the top of the poster within months of a Boston club show.

Yep, like both of their albums, but I'm out of the loop in terms of what BC's thoughts are with smaller artists and the proximity clause.
