After a strong start, I feel like my excitement has been tempered quite a bit as of late. In terms of acts that I would pay to see on tour, and haven’t seen at Newport before, I feel like Orville Peck might be the only on that list. Sad that Newport wasn’t able to grab boygenius after having 6-ish sets from the three of them over the last 5 years. Even the to be announced acts of Son Volt, Nickel Creek, and John Oates don’t move the needle much for me.
That said, I’m excited to dive more into some of the smaller announced acts. I’ve enjoyed getting back into Aimee’s Save Me. And I still expect Newport to deliver by the end of the announcement cycle.
I'm pretty excited so far. I'd pay (and have a bunch of times) to see Orville Peck, Maggie Rogers, Bartees Strange, and Goose out on their own tours. And i've been curious about Billy Strings, Caamp, and The Beths. If I can't add anyone else to that list in the next month or so, then yeah I'll be a little worried. But it feels like a great start to me (though i agree that boygenius being out is a big bummer.)
im happy for Goose, Billy Strings, Bartees, Maggie Rogers, and Jupiter & Okwess, but the only one of those I haven't seen at least once in the last year (or won't have seen by the time NFF rolls aroud) is Bartees. Just hoping for some more unique stuff that isn't "random artist with an acoustic guitar that nobody has heard of"
Is it really that hard to book new and relevant acts? I’m not being sarcastic, I am genuinely curious. Since COVID I feel the number of repeat acts keeps going up every year.

They could use some more genre bending. So far this year feels like they're really sticking close to the lines of folk, country, bluegrass, and jam bands... other years they go outside the box with artists like Sylvan Esso, Japanese Breakfast, The Linda Lindas, and Dinosaur Jr. Those are the types of artists that really keep the festival fresh and exciting. Not that I don't want to see the genres I previously mentioned, I wouldn't be going to Newport Folk Festival if I didn't like folk... but there has to be more variety.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
It’s both a blessing and a curse that Newport has booked so well through the 2010s and into the early 2020s that many (maybe most?) popular folk acts willing and wishing to play Newport have been booked in recent years.

Maggie Rogers, Goose, Jupiter & Okwess, and Bartees Strange are all sort of on the outskirts of folk.
But I do agree with you. I’m still hoping for Sleater Kinney, The Front Bottoms, Gaslight Anthem, and/or Bibio as left field, but still fits, bookings. (We already missed out on acoustic Dropkick Murphys performing Woodie Guthrie 😔)

Related to this, Iron & Wine announced a show in DC on 07/30, so he could be in play this year too.
Correction: He added more dates, he won't be at Newport

There are a few “legacy” acts that I’m surprised Newport has never booked before even though they regularly tour and still put out new music:
Belle and Sebastian, Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver, Local Natives, Sigur Ros, Beirut, Kings of Convenience, Bombay Bicycle Club, Ben Howard, Guster, Dispatch quickly come to mind
Some of these acts still can’t be as out of reach as they may have been 10 years ago.

Sigur Ros rarely tours and when they do, it sells out super fast. Grizzly Bear broke up (though they were actually supposed to play in 2017 but couldn’t due to one of the band members having a kid or something like that). Most of the rest I have little interest in, save for Bon Iver (which is the most consistent whiff year to year by this fest).

Speaking of legacy acts, Los Lobos will by in NY on 07/28 and so far have the rest of the weekend off. I think they would be great counter-programming on the Quad against Goose or Billy Strings. If the NFF wiki is accurate, they haven't played since 1988

So bummed that Boygenius is out 😔
Your list overlaps quite a bit with mine. I was really hoping NFF might grab Pavement this year. (I mean, they have a song called “Folk Jam.”) Looks like they’re out though based on tour. (In Iceland the same weekend.)
