i dont even know what "sad guitar girls" you people are talking about
Saturday alone had Lucy Dacus, Skullcrusher, Madi Diaz, Clairo, and a very stripped back Hurray For the Riff Raff. I enjoy all of them and would prefer that music over Newport Country Fest - but I imagine this is what he meant.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
There was plenty of loud and upbeat stuff to offset the sad guitar girls last year - Sylvan Esso and The Roots were back to back and provided the most energy I've ever seen at Newport. This year has very little energy. Those hot days will feel a lot hotter.
This is the biggest thing for me I’ve noticed with this years lineup. Even the soul acts this year are more introspective than get you on the dance floor.

eh, I dunno. Seems about the same in that regard to me. It's more that a lot of the acts announced are just boring.
i get it now. a woman playing a guitar is a sad guitar girl.
No, a woman playing a guitar, singing sad lyrics, and using mildly emo riffs is a “sad guitar girl”.
There’s also a popular Spotify playlist: “Sad Girl Starter Pack.” Which is why I used the name. Not in any attempt to be diminishing to their craft. (There was also “sad dad” music last year.) I quite like all of those artists.

yeah no i get that, but people like Lucy Dacus and Clairo don't play anything even remotely approaching an "emo" riff - just seemed like people were listing all the female acts from last year's lineup.

Night Shift is a better emo song than actual emo bands are putting out nowadays.

really hope they knock it out of the park with the last handful of names because this is the weakest lineup ive ever seen

Yeah I'm really curious what direction they'll go in for the headliners. It's probably worth penciling in Soccer Mommy on Friday and Molly Tuttle either Fri/Sat. So we still have some small/mid names to be announced too.

its just kind of exhausting how every year there are good/exciting acts that are touring that would fall well within what this fest can/could do, and you just know going in they're not getting any of them

I agree that it’s been a pretty underwhelming week (or two) of announcements. I’m still looking forward to going, but I was really hoping to see a little more variety (blues and soul, really any energy at all)

My apologies to Larry, maybe you were right 😆
It would be great if they invited back Durand Jones, his new solo album is top notch
