Batiste doesn't do much for me but the announcement does give me hope that the last three announcements will continue the trend of big names. The Carm connection is a bit of a stretch and them playing Beach Road could rule them out but Bon Iver is still potentially possible. Fleet Foxes co-headlining on tour with MMJ could make them contenders to play again too. Assuming FJM shows up to play with Lana - he could get a set of his own... especially since the last time he was there was just to play a Pickens show.
Not expecting that to happen but that would be ideal for me.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Any one of Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, and FJM would make me really happy. Seems like FJM is the most likely.
The fact that Josh Ritter has a show in Boston tonight makes me think he’s tomorrow’s announcement. Would explain why it comes after the headliners.
I'll be there, so I'll let you all know if he spills the beans about it during the show. Should be a good one — Amythyst Kiah is opening. I think the only time Josh has ever played Newport was 2009?
Also, it's been exactly 10 years since Feist played at Newport, and she has an appropriate gap in her schedule. Her show in Boston the other night was absolutely incredible. Certainly not something replicable at an outdoor festival, but she has other summer festival dates lined up, so it wouldn't be surprising for her to return to Newport this year.
I’m really hoping one of the remaining sets is either Electric Mayhem or Daisy Jones & the Six (or Blake Mills & Friends performing Daisy Jones & the Six), and the uniqueness of the set is what’s keeping it as a final announcement.

Just saw her in DC and couldn’t agree more. An unbelievable show

Do people really want to listen to mediocre Fleetwood Mac rip-offs sung by actors for an hour and a half?

I don't think anybody thinks that would be a headliner. It would be a 50 minute midday set... and yes, I would see it due to the uniqueness of the set. They've said they want to play one time only at a festival. It would be cool to see their only performance.
I do agree on the quality of the music though. I read the book a year or two ago and thought the lyrics of the songs were awful. Seeing the show, Blake Mills and Madison Cunningham did the most they could to make that music sound good but for the most part the lyrics still brought the songs down. There were a couple goodish songs though.

Doesn’t this describe a handful of acts that Newport likes to book? As for the actors, we’ve had John C Reilly, Ed Helms, Cheech and Chong, etc. As for the Fleetwood Mac ripoffs, Dawes plays almost every other year. (And is loved by many.)
I’m not asking for either to be a headliner, but I think they’d make for fun and unique sets - and if it’s not your thing, you can check someone else out at the time. The songs from Daisy Jones are catchy as hell. Blake wrote them to be pop songs, and he did a great job doing so.

Calling Dawes a Fleetwood Mac ripoff is just disingenuous. And so wrong. It’s fine if you dont like them, but they sound nothing like FM. The hate for them is weird. Dawes is so good. As for Daisy Jones, the songs are pretty good, much better than anything Lana del ray has done. The show was bad, but the songs weren’t

Dawes is one of my favorite bands. But the influence of laurel canyon folk rock on their sound, especially early in their career, is massive. When I first watched/listened to Daisy Jones and the Six, I kept thinking “this song could have been written for Dawes” (just with cheesier lyrics, because Dawes do shine lyrically). Probably why I enjoyed the music from the show so much.

What? If you think the music in Daisy Jones and the Six is better than Lana, are you even listening? Lana's new album is a masterpiece - emotionally, thematically, and lyrically comparable to Sufjan's Carrie and Lowell. Daisy Jones and the Six is comparable to The Head and the Heart, Ballroom Thieves, or Lake Street Dive. They were aiming for Fleetwood Mac and fell drastically short.

Thats fair. You always seem to have really good taste. I just dont get the Lana Del Ray thing. AT ALL. But i tend to gravitate towards music/instruments/bands more than vocalists or lyrics. Does she play an instrument? Not trying to slight her. Honestly don’t know. Think Sufjan is a genius. Plays 20 plus instruments. Still one of the best shows ive ever seen the night before he filmed his ACL TV spot. Im a huge Blake Mills fan, so i gave the Daisy Jones songs way more of a chance than they probably deserved.
Hes touring with Stevie Nicks, who was on the 2020 bill before it got cancelled. (She could still be announced too.) Hes playing in NYC the week of. Would not be out of the question for Sweet.

Okay give me Stevie and Billy. I think we're getting big names next week no matter who it is.

She was on the 2020 bill? I did not know that.
She was gonna play with Deer Tick for their final Blues Cafe shows. We had Robert Ellis down for my 50th Birthday in 2020. He spilled the beans. Dave Grohl was gonna come too. It was gonna be pretty grand. Thanks Covid.
