i guess the only saving grace is that this thing was sold out before Kahan even got announced, so it's not like people bought tickets to see him, but still i feel like he's way more popular than any artist they've had in a similar spot

The closest I can think of is Maren Morris. But I’m not sure people were itching to catch their first glimpse of Maren Morris at that time and her music is a little outside the taste of most Newport attendees.

Scheduling is awful (especially that Noah slot) and Sunday looks to be like the most anemic day at Newport in a long time. Can’t believe they weren’t able to replace Orville Peck with something at least remotely close or interesting to what he would have brought to the Fort.

Father John Misty played that spot in 2016 when he was suddenly extremely popular. Edward Sharpe also had a massive crowd in the same time slot on the following day. Though it's hard to compare any of these artists to Noah Kahan because the specific sort of TikTok-fueled virality he has received is still such a new thing. I personally would have put him on the main stage, but I'm not bothered about it.
Maybe they’ll ban the blankets in the Quad. That would be a good idea. Since everyone just hogs up real estate all day there anyways.
Edit: Also let’s not forget the same group of folks that line up at the gate and throw clothes all over the front row at the Quad….and reserve spots all day long…the worst kind of people.

If they just flipped Noah and Nickel Creek, I would think that would clean it up.

Im only going Friday (if I can snag a ticket) My schedule is:

Im only going Friday (if I can snag a ticket) My schedule is:
Ron Gallo 11:00-11:40 (harbor)
The Beth’s 12:15-1:05 (Quad)
TBA 1:50-2:50 (Fort)
Go to Mdou at Quad if TBA is bad till 2:20
Maybe skip TSS for Heavy Heavy spot
Thee Sacred Souls 2:50-3:40 (Quad)
The Heavy Heavy 3:45-4:40 (Harbor)
Maggie Rogers/camp for MMJ 4:55 (Fort)
There are seats under the Harbor and Quad tents, so it's usually a good idea to show up pretty early to those sets if you want a seat/shade. It's always pretty easy to get a good standing spot at the Fort, though I would imagine there will be a solid crowd for Maggie/MMJ.

No stages are a true nightmare. The worst stage at Newport is still often leagues better than the worst stage at any major music festival.
Harbor and Quad are in tents and have rows of chairs in each tent. Unfortunately they don’t clear the seats out between each act so it can be very difficult to get a seat because people camp in what is sometimes the only respite from the sun or rain you’ll find at the Fort. You’ll also find people in the front row snoozing during an artist, which I find problematic, and wish other than some reserved handicapped seats that they would clear out seats after each act.
The sight lines for Harbor and Quad can be difficult if you can’t get a seat or some of the limited standing room in the shade under the tent. Looking from a sunny spot into a shaded tent is difficult. But it’s doable.
There’s a screen on the Quad stage which makes up for limited sightlines. There is not a screen for the Harbor stage. But the acts on the Harbor stage tend to draw smaller crowds so it’s less needed.
The Fort Stage is the biggest stage. No tents. No seats. There is a pit for standing room attendees at the front of the stage and it’s rarely full other than for the biggest and most popular acts. Most people set up their own chairs or blankets around the standing room area and take over the field in front of the stage. There’s one screen on the right side of the stage. But for the most part the sound and sightlines are good from anywhere in the field up until you run into the water.
The only other problem is that there’s a narrow tunnel between the Harbor/Fort Stages and the Quad Stage. It’s actually a bit unsafe when Newport books acts like Noah in the Quad because of the traffic in the tunnel. The Quad also has fewer accommodations so food lines, beer lines, and portapotty lines can be jam packed during the most popular sets.

Awesome, thanks for the heads up. Is the pit a line system?
Awesome, thanks for the heads up. Is the pit a line system?
Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but no, I do not believe that there is. The pit is big enough to accommodate most people who want to be in it for most acts. The only acts I can really remember seeing the pit at capacity for were Mumford and Sons, Paul Simon (but only after it was sort of obvious Paul Simon was coming out), Joni Mitchell, and Dolly Parton. I’m sure there have been others… maybe Roger Waters? But it’s rare. And when it happens it’s usually after a few minutes of the band having taken the stage and a lull in any competing stages.
If you want in the pit for sure, just get there as soon as the previous act is ending. Or get into the pit for the previous act. They don’t clear it out. If you want up close into the front rows, get into the pit for a previous act. (Although for smaller acts, sometimes you can go up in between sets and still get into the first few rows.)
Remember… most people are here to just sit back and relax and catch some good tunes. They’re happy watching from their seats.
Honestly one of my favorite things about Newport is you can come and go into the pit as you like. The artist teases your favorite song? Run up into the pit. Want to dance for 10 minutes to a bluegrass or brass band that’s on the Fort Stage? Run up into the pit for a few minutes. Getting tired of standing or dancing? Retreat back to your seats.

I think I can safely echo this. Last year, I was able to make my way up front for The National not too long before their set time. For the potential surprises, I’d advise trying to get into the pit a little earlier.

It’s very pleasant. It’s why while we may bicker about the lineup or the schedule, we all come back year after year. It’s hard to find a more pleasant festival. You will see some amazing acts in a way that you can best enjoy. You can choose to get up close and personal or sit back and relax.
It’s also why I’m personally upset that Noah was booked for Quad. Quad and Harbor don’t offer the same flexibility for popular acts that Fort does. Which usually isn’t a problem for 80-90% of the acts on those stages; but the few that are more popular than what’s enjoyable on those stages are where I start to feel like I’m more at a Bonnaroo (distant and disconnected) than at Newport (personal, up close, and intimate). But don’t let that scare you; Harbor and Quad are still very enjoyable stages for most acts that play them, and when you catch a more intimate act, you’ll be happy if you land seats there. I still remember landing seats to see Phoebe Bridgers on the Harbor Stage and it’s one of my most memorable concert moments.

The ease of walking right up into the pit even a song or two into the headliner is the absolute best part about this festival.
Being locked out of a decent spot at the other two stages unless you camp there all day is the absolute worst part.

Well this sounds pleasant
Pleasant is the exact best word to describe it. The music is fine - there's always a couple acts I'm truly looking forward to along with plenty i couldn't give a fig about - but it's a nice atmosphere and you're on the water and as long as there's no storms, it's great. We've been renting the same house in Newport for years now, we always book it for the week(s) around the fest so worse case scenario, if we can't get tickets to any particular day we just have another beach day or whatever.

I would love to see more seating/shade for both the Harbor and the Quad, but I recognize that the space is limited. I don't think they should clear the seats between each set. If they did that, then there would be a queue or just a mob waiting for one artist to end so they can get seats for the next artist. You would spend 1/3 of your day waiting in line for an artist to end in order to get to see your preferred artist from a seat. I appreciate that you can choose to forego seeing an artist that you would prefer to see in order to retain seats/shade. I have often found that I sat through an artist that I didn't have an appreciation for in order to have seats for the artist before and after that artist. Have often had eye opening experiences in this way. That being said, I have never slept in a seat during a set.
I do think the seats skew towards older people. Noticed that dynamic on a really hot day last year. The Harbor stage seating was probably 80% over 45 years of age on that day. I don't think they all were seated there because it was their favorite band, but rather they needed the shade.
Neko Case is going to be the interviewee on the Sheroes podcast recording at the foundation stage. I expect that means she'll be popping up at various stages. Maybe she'll fill one of those TBA slots? I guess she won't have her band with her, so probably not.

Big Neko fan! I doubt she’d be the Fort TBA. If she were the Harbor TBA, not sure why they wouldn’t just outright announce her. Maybe she’ll be this years Natalie Merchant and be all over the place.
Anyone ever stay at motel 6. I’m going by myself for one night, so trying to find the most “affordable”
The one in Eau Claire, WI was the worst stay I think I've ever had and regularly used to stay at Red Roof Inns, Quality Inns, Travel Lodges, Charles River Inn, and places like that. My aunt booked it and four of us drove out to Eaux Claires. I remember there being just an awful smell in the halls, like urine and old people and probably mold. I'm pretty certain there were blood stains on the curtains. There were regularly children running up and down the hallway unsupervised. The bathtub/shower did not drain. I can't remember all the details, but just saying to myself that I would never stay in a Motel 6 again or let my aunt book a place to stay again (this was amended, unfortunately, due to Radiohead in Philly the last night of the tour, and the place was also rough and had a broken elevator).

Never stayed at the one near Newport though...
Lol this is my fear. I should specify, the one in Newport.

I stayed there once and I'd rather sleep in my car in the Walmart parking lot than stay there again.
It was a while ago so I don't really remember everything but I know it smelled terrible, the sheets felt gritty, and the ceiling in the bathroom was literally leaking blood in front of the toilet.
