Bummed to see so many of you get shutout yesterday. The app was a mess for me to, initially gave me the not in range message for two minutes then refreshed and 3 days still said remind me but I pressed it and added me to waitlist but after that gave me a two day for Friday and Saturday. It just can’t handle the traffic for that demand to operate without causing frustration.

The app really was a mess. I felt like I got my Saturday-Sunday two day pass out of pure luck because I hit the “Remind Me” button at 1pm and it took me to the checkout page. The button should’ve changed to “Buy Now” immediately at 1 to avoid confusion

Ok I take back what I said, sounds like there were a bunch of shenanigans.

Maybe the member presales are another reason to go with Dice? Might be easier to have that 3-day purchase window with the individual codes with them than another platform. That way, it also doesn’t get infiltrated with bots.
"You look like you're listening to every note." - Lady to me during LCD's "final" show 2023: Mar 29 - Guster Apr 6 - Postmodern Jukebox Apr 26 - Father John Misty May 14 - Taylor Swift (Philly) May 17 - Robert Plant and Alison Krauss July 12 - moe. July 16 - CAKE (Portland, ME) July 28-30 - Newport Folk (#12!) Dec 8-9 - Goosemas!
You cannot convince me that Dice sold that many tickets in under a minute….is that even technologically possible?
10,000 isn’t a lot of web traffic. Your typical arena show sells 3-4x as many tickets. And an on sale for an arena tour is selling 40,000 tickets for 15+ venues at the same time. The waitlist itself could have been used strategically to reduce the number of purchases being made at a single moment - many people who got onto the waitlist were offered tickets shortly after. (Which is actually a really smart way to manage traffic.)

what arenas fit 30k+?
Arena shows fit 15-20,000. Stadium shows fit 30,000+. The point still stands.

I love Caamp but since I don't have tickets and am feeling negative... this feels weird for a first announcement. They've been there like 3 out of the last 4 festivals or something. Doesn't really move the needle.

So does Newport always release the lineup in incremental announcements? Last year I think the final announcements went up pretty close to the actual festival date. I've never been and want to go one of these years but just seems odd that it sells out before any full lineup release.

This is the most sensible take IMHO.
I'm not opposed to conspiracy theories of NFF controlling the release of tickets, but I need a compelling argument for me to believe that. What's the end-goal of doing something like that for a festival that is already guaranteed to sell out in literal minutes? Seems like wasted energy to me.
While this approach can be frustrating, I have not seen an alternative suggested that is in any way better aside from a true lottery style. The ZB tour approach doesn't really change anything (aside from the general lottery aspect) because in those lotteries you typically can choose from multiple dates/locations but this is a one-off event. The ZB approach really just increases the potential ticket pool you're in the running for and so a single event has no way of changing that.
Areas For Potential Change?
While I enjoy the unannounced lineup aspect, it has to be acknowledged that it causes an increased sense of potential FOMO and thus and increased initial demand (notice how tickets were still available on dice resale the week of the festival last year)
ETA: However, I must acknowledge that there is potential that an announced lineup could cause the same issue just from a different group of potential attendees.
Display your position in the wait list. While this won't solve the underlying issues of scarcity, it would be nice to see where I am in the wait-list in order to make some more educated decisions about travel arrangements. Also, it would likely help clean that list up a bit. My friend and I are both on the list and we are only trying to get 3 tickets total, but we have no iea which one of us is closer to the front of the queue so we'll both just sit in there and potentially cause more delays as tickets start to trickle onto the resale.

I was thinking about this post-announcement and it makes a lot of sense to me. Because there is quite a bit of anger about the ticket buying process, they may have thought it would be best to announce someone generally well-liked with the Newport crowd, but not someone who would cause more inflammation for those who are still upset about yesterday.

Love em too, makes the shutout yesterday sting, but definitely and odd first announcement. I know they skipped last year, so figured they'd show this year.

I was talking to my wife about this last night. I really think foundation / memberships are the cause of a lot of the drama. Good for me, because I can afford the foundation membership and we'll go anyway. A lot of others don't have that ability, so is it really part of this fest's goals to throw a party for a lot of the same people year over year?
I think the membership will eventually go away and be replaced w the foundation membership only.

Yeah, same. I'm trying to remind myself that tickets were available on the resale even the week before the fest, but this is also the first year we decided to splurge and get an actually nice lodging and thus had to put down a (relatively) hefty deposit. Maybe we'll wind up on our kayaks out in the harbor.

The cleaning up the list part is a really good point

Here's the initial lineup for the Cambridge Folk Fest, same weekend as Newport. The only overlap artists from what people had on their bingo cards was Ibibio Sound Machine and William Prince.
Dermot Kennedy would've been really cool for Newport. He's probably a little too popular now, though. That being said, surprised he's that far down on the Fuji Rock poster.
