what's holding folk up? early Bob Dylan? "don't think twice" is absolutely incredible but long can one song keep a genre viable in survivor?
Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon (with and without Garfunkel), Woody Guthrie, Odetta, Pete Seeger, Donovan, Leonard Cohen, Crosby Stills & Nash, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam, Emmylou Harris, Loudon Wainwright, Dar Williams, Richard Shindell, Ani DiFranco, Steve Earle, Judy Collins…
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

So basically a bunch of OLD people.
Gregory Alan Isakov, Mountain Man, Bonny Light Horseman, Yola, Amythyst Kia, Rhiannon Giddens, Our Native Daughters, Fleet Foxes, Joanna Newsom, Laura Marling, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Sufjan Stevens (he dips in a bunch of genres, but yeah, a lot of his work is folk), Anais Mitchell, Iron & Wine, Molly Tuttle...
And, of course, I'm not really venturing that far into folk rock, which I have to assume falls under this category given what else is on the list!

All this folk/early Dylan talk puts me in mind of one of the (for me, anyway) most memorable scenes in Don't Look Back, and one of the greatest dickhead flexes of all time.
Donovan was so hyped to meet Dylan, who at that point was already a star. A lot of the British press had been comparing Donovan to Dylan, which pissed Dylan, who notoriously had an ego about this sort of thing, off. So, they meet, and Donovan's all excited to play for this artist he admires so much, and he whips out "To Sing For You," which is a perfectly lovely song, if kind of straight down the pipe. Dylan then takes the guitar and hits him with "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," a fucking all-time masterpiece. You can kind of almost see Donovan's soul leave his body.

"indie" and "alternative" are both kind of bullshit genres. lots of good music in both but the parameters of the genres are more chronological than qualitative.
alternative is basically "cool" music that came out from 1986-2000 and indie is basically "cool" music that came out 2000-present.

I'm on alternative for this reason. Kill the fake genres that mean nothing before the real ones. Save inforoo from the cringe of letting "indie" make the top 5.
not to critique teddy beefs but i've always consider the genre to be "jamband" rather than just jam. then again i didn't know people regularly referred to RHCP as "the red hots" so what do i know.
my favorite band is a jamband and the whole jamband scene is a significant part of my identity for better or worse, but i will not put up a fight to save it.
