I had a weird journey with the Grateful Dead. I think my first exposure to them was the Touch of Grey video, which, weirdly, got major airplay on MTV in 1987.
From there, I more or less didn't care about them until freshman or sophomore year of high school, when everyone in my class got the same damn Skeletons From the Closet greatest hits record from the BMG CD club. Everybody got super-into wearing tie dye and that stupid dancing bear for about 15 minutes. That said, I do love some of the songs on that disc:
That was the vast majority of my exposure to them up until about five years ago, when the bassist in my band basically pushed me into a deep dive on them, and I discovered a lot of stuff that I really dug. The fact that I'd started smoking weed in the intervening decades probably helped.
One of my happiest accident moments as a DJ was being able to seamlessly transition that last track into "Fight the Power" by Public Enemy.
So, yeah, I like the Dead, Goose, and even Phish enough to not vote Jam at this particular time.

Funk is great because of you ever find a young new band that describes their music as “funk” you can be confident they suck without having to listen to them.

Probs not gonna score any cool points for saying this but Turkuaz and Khruangbin are really good recent funk bands that are great live. And I don't like Goose that much but someone already pointed out that they do funk and they're one of Inforoo's most favorite bands (along with Khruangbin).
Jam is straight & hyperpop is gay. I don’t make the rules.
I tried so hard but I can't listen to this whole thing - which isn't on you - I know the band itself is very BIPOC adjacent and my issues with jam include the lack of fans of color but I can't do this episode. Sorry just being honest with you
