Especially with all this talk of alternative going, since I think it was established a few rounds ago that emo falls under that umbrella.
Emo and scene could be lumped into anything you want from punk to alternative to buttrock to p-a shit.
Why the folk hate? Folk is more than just jingly jangly strumming and vocal harmonizing. It's the base for World and is interpreted differently in every culture (Irish Folk, Romanian Folk, etc.). There was a time in music history following the great depression where folk singers were carrying the banner for labor rights and got lumped in with McCarthy's Red Scare. They owned it because they picked the side of the working class. Pete Seeger was a big part of that as of course was Woodie Guthrie. Whereas the bulk of modern country until the last several years has been all God Bless the USA proto-MAGA shit, folk comes from the far left side of mid 20th Century Politics. Also Peter, Paul & Mary > Toby Keith
when i think of folk i'm thinking primarily of the american tradition of folk music, i.e. woody guthrie, rather than world music. i know that isn't the literal definition but i think it's the definition most people think of, somebody on an acoustic guitar in a venue that doesn't serve alcohol.
there is good folk music, it's just the genre i'm the least likely to listen to of the remaining list.
Check out the Classical thread here where we all pretend to listen to classical music!
Oh damn, it made it to 2 pages and only half the posts are “I don’t really listen to classical can someone give me recs?” Great stuff.
Your argument against classical is that people would pretending to listen to it whilst there are several genres where I'm sure nobody really gives a fuck about (see funk, soul, r&b, country..) but go off lmao. Maybe 3post1jack1 should make some more threads for those aswell so we can all pretend to care aswell.

But you also have to take into account all of folk's various offshoots. For example, there's a very heavy folk influence in this track, despite it not necessarily falling squarely under the "folk" umbrella:

This message board is based around a music festival that regularly books numerous artists who play those genres of music. People here listen to way more funk and R&B than classical. Breathtakingly dumb argument.
But I’ll make you a deal, the five people who have posted in the classical thread don’t have to vote for it.

Check the edited post you quoted. While it's the every-man definition to view it through an American lens, folk is much broader and is essentially of and from the people. Plus Leo Kotke was one of the greatest 12 string guitarists in history when viewed from an American perspective. Like Prine, he was an exceptional story teller along with being able to play.

edit: also how would you even know? It's not like people here brag about that they listen to Parliament Funkadelic, Sly & The Family Stone or artists like Michael Jackson, Janelle Monae, old Beyoncé, Janet and Aaliyah music etc.

what i like best about this is the riff, which you can trace directly to the earliest purveyors of american folk music because they also used guitars.
In classical's favor, the apex and most ambitious era of rock was early 1970's progressive which drew heavily from classical because of the level of musicianship. Educated and talented musicians pushing the boundaries of what could be achieved in a rock format as it begun to mature? More please. From Genesis to King Crimson to Yes and particularly ELP who often performed works of classical live - sometimes collaborating with 20th Century composers - rock kicked it up a few notches. Maybe people scream "excess" or "gratuitous" but that misses the broader point that not everyone is satisfied taking a trip to 3 chord city with a 4/4 beat, a couple stanzas, a chorus hook compressed in to 3:25 seconds. Some people expect more.

One other thing on this - Phish is your favorite band. Folk is part of what Phish is.

point taken, workingmans and american beauty are super folksy and awesome.

Just think about which genre is the most likely to have stormed the capital on January 6th.
Hilarious that the two genres that jump to mind here are country and classical (Hitler didn't choose jazz as the soundtrack of the Third Reich, after all).

I'm going Techno, I wish their had been a category that was just electronic. I love electronic music, but I feel like a lot of the stuff I listen to doesn't fall into house or techno, but to me its more than ambient.
he/they '12 - Firefly '13 - Firefly, Made In America '14 - Firefly, Made In America '15 - Mountain Jam (Sunday), Firefly, Pitchfork, Made In America '16 - Boston Calling, Firefly, Osheaga, Made In America, Roots Picnic NYC '17 - Boston Calling, Gov Ball, Firefly (Sunday), Pitchfork, Day For Night '18 - Boston Calling, Mountain Jam, Osheaga '19 - Form, Firefly (Sunday) '22 - Boston Calling, Firefly '24 - Solid Sound, Soundside
Anywho, country should probably go. The only ones holding it together are prolly Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt, George Strait, John Prine, Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson.. and Kacey Musgraves, I guess. Who's to dissappointed atm anyways so. Eh.

Anyway, classical is fine. I even rather like ambient adjacent classical like Frahm. I’m mostly busting on it because it’s fun to see yet another trademark Bing meltdown.
But it’s clearly the remaining genre that people are least into here, and probably has been since day 1. Time for it to go.

is it though? i don't think of phish as being folk at all.

Dude, the Now Playing thread literally exists.
Yeah, I see people constantly posting those artists lmfao.
