here's some kickass soul/r&b that is all pretty recent that I think people around here do/would care about.
Also Frank Ocean is r&b, an artist thats beloved on this board by all, also FKA twigs, Ravyn Lenae, SZA, Kelela,
Imo, alternative r&b is way different than the classic 80/90's r&b. Besides, depends on what kind of album you're listening off of Frank. CO is alt r&b, Blonde is art pop. So is most of Twigs' work. Kelela aswell.

Angelo Moore is kind of dark skinned. Frank should have talked with him.

Artists aren't bound by one genre tho.
i’m aware, and it wasnt specified under the OP which r&b it was referring to. i’m just saying more people listen to r&b than they may even realize

thats also fair, im more going by rym and wiki descriptors of genre than anything. art pop is a better descriptor for his music than r&b and i wasnt aware of his disdain for that being a genre descriptor for his music.

can someone summarize this for me so I don’t have to later? Thanks
Secret rounds are the Tower of Babel of Survivor threads. We all have no idea what to argue about, so the thread fractures and people just start talking about whatever's on their mind.
can someone summarize this for me so I don’t have to later? Thanks
Remember when Hell had frozen over? > The cold still burns underneath my skin > The water is rising all around me > And there is nothing left I can give > All these tears I've shed > I saw the wildfire spread > You said you cheated death > But Heaven was in my head > They say "the good die young" > No use in saying "what is done is done" 'cause it's not enough > And when the night gives way > It's like a brand new doomsday > What will be will be > Every river flows into the sea, but it's never enough > And when the night gives way > It's like a brand new doomsday > No matter what they say > It's like a brand new doomsday > The embers still glow when I'm sober > The gold in the flame burns brighter now > I have to rebuild, now it's over > Maybe now I'm lost, I can live > Souls don't break, they bend > But I sometimes forget > I have to do this for you > And the only way out is through > Yeah, death is an open door > Words the prophets said > Still swimming through my head > Now there's no stars left in the sky > 'Cause this well will never run dry > What if I completely forget? > What if I never accept? > 'Cause when you fade away > It's like a brand new doomsday > Yeah > They say "the good die young" > No use in saying "what is done is done" 'cause it's not enough > And when the night gives way > It's like a brand new doomsday > What will be will be > Every river flows into the sea, but it's never enough > And when the night gives way > It's like a brand new doomsday > No matter what they say > It's like a brand new doomsday

I love what punk stands for and all, but the music itself just hasn't ever done much for me. I'd like to change my mind so someone give me the goods
Here are five different types of songs from five different modern acts that can all be classified as “punk” or punk-adjacent. These songs have messages about the fears of aging and death, intensely personal struggles, and the lack of kindness in our modern world. The shit says something. The IDLES song is a pro-immigration singalong. If you look at the lead singer the guy is near tears at the end of that Glastonbury performance.
I feel like folk music was the first, at least here in the states, where it was okay to have an overt message or take a stance. Punk took that mold and added an element of bluntness and “fuck you” that I appreciate. It made it okay to be pissed off and wild in music, for better or for worse. You can see the influence of that across music of all genres. Punk is no longer in the forefront of popular culture or anything, but it’s still going strong.
Indie and alternative need to go. They are radio formats, not genres.
Hard disagree...at least, with that logic. Semantically, in general conversation, sure, but for the purposes of this poll, those are both subgenres, primarily of rock, but also (in indie's case) for some pop. Like, if, in this poll, indie and alternative aren't genres, where do you put bands like Death Cab For Cutie, the Lemonheads, etc. (IN THE TRASH HEYO! Just heading that one off the pass).
Arguing that they should go because they suck/you don't like sad bois/girls with guitars/whatever makes total sense to me. Arguing that they should go because well actually they're not genres, I dunno.
if blonde was made by like Alex G no one would call it R&B
I don’t know much about Alex G. There are white guys that sound like r&b though. With Frank, I it’s just the way he sings, he either got that from church or listening to r&b or both.

Not sure that this is relevant, the original 30 options don't necessarily need to cover the entirety of recorded music.
I would feel stronger about this if there was a straight Rock option, but I think indie and alternative are suspect as genres. Saying you listen to indie is just taste signalling (I like rock/r&b/folk/country, but the GOOD kind), and while alternative may have once been useful as a descriptor, it was co-opted almost immediately. Most of the artists who have dominated "alternative" charts and radio formats are pretty clearly buttrock and not really an alternative to anything.
