Went back and used AOTY to check through Pitchfork’s scores for the year (https://www.albumoftheyear.org/ratings/1-pitchfork-highest-rated/2023/1) and again it was another year where there weren’t a lot of super high scoring albums and not a lot of 8+ scores that went to bands that could feasibly headline. boygenius is as reasonable a headliner as any other option at this point tbh.

I swore I saw something about Julien saying boygenius going on a break and I'm mad I can't find it because it's all I ever want to respond with when I see them getting suggested in *every* fest thread lol

And people won't consider the possibility of Phoebe Bridgers solo (though honestly that might be out of reach for pitchfork). No indication that she has a new album, but there's no indication Boygenius is touring either

Phoebe has said she's done touring Punisher, so she'd need a new album out before she does anything solo. (she closed the Punisher chapter while opening for Taylor Swift)
also I would love to be more creative than boygenius but Pitchfork has not given me a tremendous amount of options. I would love for there to be a Jessie Ware/Caroline Polachek day but even as someone who's usually way more optimistic about who can headline this thing that seems like a huge stretch.
Wild that Jai Paul feels like the most likely of those three
Well headlining Jai would be a choice. I think subbing would be perfectly fine. Lets see where his name ends up on Kilby Court day by day and its at least an indicator.
Seems unlikely. If anything they'll play a couple dates in other parts of the country around the Coachella dates, but I've given up all hope for a Chicago show.

They announced there only US show this year is Coachella so no chance there
Sounds about right. Not sure why Albarn and co are allergic to playing smaller venues in the US? I'm sure there's still plenty of money to be made touring theaters/small sheds throughout the country.
You'd think the recent announced restructuring could play into the future of this festival.
On its face it doesn't make sense for GQ to be running a niche music fest but I also don't really know the current mission of GC is in the year 2024. Perhaps there is currency in being a musical tastemaker.

The festival is separate from the publication. So I doubt this year even is affected. 2025 will be something else. I mean why would they have expanded to a Mexico version if they knew this was coming. If GQ somehow brings in some money and pull to get some bigger names than that is something to be hopeful about.

I wouldn't think that 2024 would get pulled but things can always change fast. Who knows when they started putting money into the Mexico thing and when these other changes came into focus.
But just in general I'm continually amazed that this fest keeps chugging along with all of the shifts in the music world, concert business and it's own corporate structure.
