As in a duet? Or are they announcing two artists today? A duet would be interesting and Andrew Bird being present gives us another Fiona Apple connection... but Madison Cunningham's set was one of the more disappointing sets I've seen at Newport. It wasn't really her fault though to be fair but playing a slow, toned-down set in between Jupiter & Okwess and Remi Wolf didn't work for me.

Who is the initial Fiona connection?
Confused myself there for a second. That's assuming Iron & Wine is announced. It would make sense considering Bartees Strange played both the Gull & Stars mini show and the festival that Iron & Wine will also play this year.
Upcoming Shows: July 19: Noah Kahan/Mt. Joy July 26: Newport Folk Festival August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

On Madison's instagram she said "No spoilers" about the set, and Newport replied "No spoilers". So I think it's gonna be a good one. Could it be Fiona?

Sunday’s really turned around in the past week… they seriously backloaded it. I’d say they have the most talented instrumentalists at this point, even if not necessarily the biggest names.
Fetch the Bolt Cutters released in 2020 and it was rumored that she was going to tour and play Newport that year. Covid caused both to be canceled. Out of all the announcements from 2020, only a handful still haven't played so it feels like they're still trying to re-book those artists - assuming she was one.
Andrew Bird, Mike Viola, and Watkins Family Hour were all supposed to play in 2020 and all have connections to Fiona. Nickel Creek and Mike Viola are going to be on tour with Andrew Bird leading up to the festival this year.
Google tells me Rhiannon Giddens has worked with Fiona on a project. Elvis Costello has played with Fiona - assuming he makes a surprise appearance at Folk.
Iron & Wine played the Gull & Stars show and has a new song with Fiona.
I'm reaching but she's number one on my bucket list so I'm allowed to reach - especially since I called all three headliners last year.

there are a lot more acts with convenient touring schedules then there are slots left.
What are we at:
2 Friday 3 Sunday
yeah i just mean more in that acts like Tyler Childers, Hozier, Noah Kahan, Iron & Wine, Old Crow Medicine Show, the Flaming Lips, etc. all keep getting mentioned and its like, at least a few of these acts that seem extremely possible/probable simply aren't going to be there no matter how likely the tour dates make them seem
plus you have to leave room for surprise headliners Fiona Apple and Beyonce and whoever

Think Iron & Wine, Old Crow Medicine Show and Flaming Lips are hypotheticals.
Hozier makes the most sense since Allison Russell is opening for him during this tour and will be touring together the days around the festival.
Noah Kahan feels “too big” and will be a surprise if anything.
Still think Tenacious D and Monsters of Folk are still on the docket based on social media indications.

eh, Sam Beam playing that even the other night makes me think they're a lock
but yeah my larger point is that there are like 8-9 or more acts that everyone seems to think will/could be there based on tour proximity and obviously that can't happen

Because of the mid lineup and people hoping for anyone but Hozier. (Personally, I’m hoping for Hozier )
Hozier puts on one hell of a show. His new stuff is fantastic live, with his band. I'd be SHOCKED if he's not playing Friday. SHOCKED.
Dude. We get it. You want Hozier. I'd much rather see Noah Kahan or Tyler Childers or any of the super grroups that have been mentioned. I'd be BORED if Hozier is playing Friday. BORED.

When did I say I wanted to see Hozier? He’s been there plenty, but it makes sense that he headlines.
