I think I’m going with the Mt. Joy theory for the unannounced (unless it’s James Bay, who is also playing with Noah Kahan and Mt Joy in Boston). Maybe a stretch, but maybe Nathan’s Rateliff is doing How Long Gone and guesting on Cory Wong’s set? 🤷♀️ I guess he’s headlined for Rateliff before.
Looking at Fenway‘s schedule, The Hives are opening for Foo Fighters next week, and that would be a fun, out-of-left-field booking.
I really hope he stays far away from the Corey Wong set.

That set is gonna fuk!
I can’t wait! One of the top three of the weekend for me. I saw Bella Fleck in the Flecktones at the 2000 festival (Willie and String Cheese too!) stoked to have Victor back in the house!
The thing about most if not all of these possibilities is I don't understand why they wouldn't have been regular lineup announcements
I can wrap my head around not announcing Rateliff because he’d be an assumed headliner and maybe he likes being a surprise and playing the tent. But man do I hope I’m wrong.

the TBA is either a) someone playing locally who can't announce, or b) someone who NFF didn't want to pay the premium to announce them and get the benefit of their advertising.
it's almost certainly "a" based upon the set time. would be really weird if they put a big act on a 3 pm in the Quad.
I’m thinking of all the past years’ unannounced acts - James Taylor, Rateliff, Mumford, Black Pumas, Bleachers (anyone else I’m missing?). I could be wrong, but I don’t think a radius clause was ever an issue for those artists.
Could the Friday set be a Joan Baez tribute/collaboration? It still seems crazy that she is there just to read poetry for 10 minutes.
I really don’t think Joan does more than 4 songs anymore. From what I can tell, she’s done doing full sets. I also think she’ll be someone’s guest and my guess is Dave and Gillian. I’d be shocked if we don’t get 2 Dylan covers from Dave, Gillian and Joan. And then maybe a “Will the circle be unbroken” and maybe 1 more standard.
In 2023 Joan covered Seven Curses and that would be incredible.
My Wild card guess on 3pm Quad is Bob Weir and Wolf bros

Mumford was too big too announce. I believe they were taking a big enough pay cut to play that they didn’t want other festivals calling them up and wondering the disparity in payments.
Black Pumas and Bleachers were Covid year. Both used Newport as a warm up show. (And pretty much admitted it on stage.) There could have been many reasons for not announcing: they didn’t want it on record as an official show back, they didn’t want to or couldn’t commit, etc.
I’m not sure about JT and Rateliff the first time. I thought both had Boston shows, which may have been radius clause? As we know about JT, he’s sometimes called last minute to play so could have just been an unplanned thing.

Four songs is perfect for the 45 minute set. Start with a song from Molly Tuttle, then Alison Russel, then Adrienne Lenker, the Joandoes her own four song set.

if the TBA was Joan Baez then why wouldn't it be announced? makes no sense.
Also as much as I'd love to see ol' Bobby Weir, I highly doubt he's going to spend one of his two weekends off before the Sphere finale run to fly across country and play a 45 minute set at 3 pm

Because it isn't a Joan Baez set really... it is a tribute to Joan Baez. If they announce it as Joan Baez, then people would be dissapointed it isn't just her singing.

there's still no reason why that would be unannounced.

I also struggle to think a Tribute to Joan Baez isn’t on the fort. It’s probably just MJ Lenderman and NR is doing the podcast and guesting with someone

MJ will be playing with Wednesday in the set before the unannounced set, on the same stage. Not sure if that makes it more or less likely that he’d get his own.

This would be the tightest radius clause in history
He shouldn't be allowed to leave the stage during the set change if this is the case. I cannot fathom why they would not have announced this is in advance but like who knows I guess.
The problem with the guessing game is if it's someone big enough to logically keep under wraps the stage/time is kinda small/early. If it's someone appropriate for the slot, it seems curious that it wouldn't just be announced.

this is why the best guess is that it's someone appropriate for the slot who is under a radius clause. Other people in that time slot this year are Elle King and Cory Wong. Last year those slots were Thee Sacred Souls, Hold Steady, Remi Wolf. Someone like Mt. Joy makes a whole lot of sense.

I’m still a believer of that it was supposed to be black keys, they bailed, they bumped up hozier and stopped announcing while they figured out a replacement. I think MJ is just filling an 18th spot. His band is the same band as Wednesday, so it’s an easy fix. Keep the gear up there, keep the schedule the same so there’s less overlap and give them a break between sets. I think beakers right in that they won’t announce it until the pre show sells out, as probably MJ is driving more ticket sales than the podcast is for that show.
I kind of buy the Mt. Joy theory, but I struggle to think that Jay wanted them so bad that he’s doing a long work around for their radius clause instead of just letting them go and getting someone else. Holding back an announcement for someone notable makes sense, Mt. Joy doesn’t deserve this much fuss. But I hear your point about it not being someone big. It’s just weird to me that he wouldn’t just get one of the other 200 3pm quad acts available

Is it possible it's nobody and they are still figuring it out/are planning to book a solo or side act from someone already on the lineup and at the fort??

Maybe, but it’s weird they were able to make replacements pretty quickly for Sunday, so why leave a spot open like that?
