Is it possible it's nobody and they are still figuring it out/are planning to book a solo or side act from someone already on the lineup and at the fort??
No disrespect to MJ, but I think we are essentially saying the same thing. It was no one and they had a built in replacement playing the stage the set before. Easy peasy
I think i'm finally giving up on trying to go to this... Even if i got off the waitlist, the schedule is SUPER annoying. Almost all of the people i want to see/am familiar with overlap, which is a super bummer. (Friday - TBA/Guster/Petey/MUNA/Pumas all in a cluster. Saturday - Orville/TWOD/Craige&Slim/Killer Mike all in a cluster. Sunday - De La/Brittany/Dropkick/Conan all overlap.) It would be a real annoying weekend running back and forth through bottlenecks to try to see 20min of each one. Probably just not meant to be.
Could it be a Lonesome Trio spot and because Ed Helms was announced for the aftershow they decided just to keep it TBA?
I still remember a Newport Folk Facebook story about a week after Molly Tuttle’s announcement stating that we were in for a treat due to a special set featuring Molly. I wonder if she may play a normal set on Friday and then a special cover jamgrass set on Saturday?
In a similar vein, maybe Old Crow? I assume we may see some of them with Dave and Gillian and then again with Ed Helms. Since the last time they played they headlined, maybe to get them on the afternoon at the Quad they left it TBA

Also, as for the cryptic post about Molly Tuttle, on March 23 (the day after Newport officially announced Molly Tuttle for Newport) Newport posted: “Something tells us this summer’s Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway set will be like nothing you’ve seen before” and Molly commented: “Can’t wait!”

Thanks for the reminder and no thanks for the extra schedule anxiety!!!

OCMS could be a radius clause thing, since they’re headlining Rhythm and Roots. Molly Tuttle, however, has shows on Saturday and Sunday.

I knew this was gonna happen too. Naturally all the weak sauce announcements don’t overlap with what I actually want to see LOL.
Maybe they are going to try the Mermaid Avenue set again? Mavis might so up for her 85th (unrelated but she and Tweedy are close) and Billy Bragg is already there.
The time slot and stage fit. Just not sure if Wilco is available ?
Dylan joins Molly Tuttle at the end and then the TBA spot is a Dylan/Baez set.
And then Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen join them.
That got unrealistic very fast LOL.
Bobby on the other hand is free ALL weekend.
OK, more realistically. Joan Baez was originally going to be the surprise that Molly Tuttle was talking about on March 23rd. It gets announced on April 3rd that Baez is doing a poetry reading at a local bookstore so everyone starts to assume that Baez will be at the fest. In order to diffuse the speculation, Newport announces that she will just be doing a poetry reading at the fest which we all agree was odd.
Just like with Paul Simon (who they didn't announce), and Joni Mitchell (who they didn't announce), they don't want to announce Joan Baez because the set is in tribute to her, but not a Joan Baez set.

Only thing is that's a lot of action for the 12:30 slot

funny enough I'm the opposite, the schedule works pretty well and leaves me with way fewer dead spots than most years
If Tenacious D was supposed to be part of the Conan set it looks like you can count that out this year after their tour has been cancelled.
I just looked into the reason, and (I’m just reporting on the situation, not trying to get political here) the reason for it was because Jack Black’s bandmate made a joke about the Trump assassination attempt while there were in Aus. It’s still possible Jack Black could appear alone once the controversy dies down in the next week? Since it's not due to something like illness.

It’s possible, I agree. (If it was intended to be just Jack Black; it wasn’t Jack Black who Newport followed though, but Tenacious D.) But I would think it’s also a little bit in bad taste to cancel your tour for those who bought tickets and made travel arrangements just to see you, only to play a one off set for those who did not.

this is why the best guess is that it's someone appropriate for the slot who is under a radius clause. Other people in that time slot this year are Elle King and Cory Wong. Last year those slots were Thee Sacred Souls, Hold Steady, Remi Wolf. Someone like Mt. Joy makes a whole lot of sense.
Orebolo? Just played Levitate this month.
eh Levitate has passed though, they'd be free to announce i think.
whoever mentioned Rhythm & Roots was probably on to something. plenty of acts there that could play that time slot, doesn't happen for another six weeks, hasn't sold out, etc. lots of reasons why someone on that lineup might not be able to announce an NFF performance in advance.

Ohhh that puts Cosmic Country into play which I think would be a good fit for that time slot as well. (And as I’ve mentioned before, an act I really wanted to see on this year’s lineup.)
Although I’d think a festival after Newport would result in an “Unannounced” rather than a “TBA” but I guess semantics.

yeah i mean TBA could be "to be announced on the day of the show" or whatever.
Daniel Donato fits, schedule wise - show in PA on Friday, then one in NY a week later. OCMS fits too, though I wonder if they're slightly too big for that slot.
