Everything seems locked down for Oppenheimer, Cillian, RDJ, and Da'vine Joy Randolph. It's officially a race between Emma and Lily.
I’ll admit to being a little bummed that the Paul Giamatti dark horse bandwagon hasn’t gathered more steam. I can’t be mad at Cillian Murphy given what he did in Oppenheimer, but Giamatti’s work in The Holdovers, while less showy, is just so great.
finally saw oppenheimer this weekend and thought it was great but I think I'd have holdovers as my #1 still

The Holdovers is so good. Easily rewatchable, too. A lot of Oscar bait movies are one and done, but I've already seen The Holdovers twice in the last month!
I'm genuinely conflicted about my best picture ranking and I think that is just a testament to how good and varied the lineup is this year. The only thing I'm sure about is that Maestro is a turd.
With a week left until Oscars, here's my predictions for who will win and who should win. I’m leaving out a few categories where I haven’t seen enough of the nominees, like best documentary, international film, and animated film.
Best Picture: Who will win: Oppenheimer Who should win: Poor Things
Both these two were in my personal top 5 last year and I’d be happy with either of them winning. I have a feeling that Poor Things might be a bit too “out there” for the Academy and it could affect how much it wins. I don’t think it will get shut out or anything, but I also don’t think it will take a lot of major awards, perhaps slightly because of its content/style. Hope I’m wrong.
Best Director: Who will win: Christopher Nolan Who should win: Yorgos Lanthimos
Again, fine with either, but personally want Lanthimos.
Best Actor: Who will win: Cillian Murphy Who should win: Cillian Murphy
I think it’s a toss up between Murphy and Giamatti and wouldn’t mind either taking it. Slight edge to Murphy for me.
Best Actress: Who will win: Lily Gladstone Who should win: Emma Stone
This is the one that I suspect I’ll be the most disappointed in. Gladstone was good, as were all the nominees here. But really rooting for Stone. As I mentioned before though, I think the Academy can’t wait to pat themselves on the back for giving it to Gladstone.
Best Supporting Actor: Who will win: Robert Downey Jr. Who should win: Sterling Brown
I admit, I’m a little bias cause I met Sterling last year in Costa Rica and got to know him a bit. Such a cool dude. But bias aside, he was great in American Fiction. My second choice would actually be De Niro but don’t think he has a chance since the Oscars seem to have this thing where they won’t give it to people who’ve already been nominated a bunch and won before.
Best Supporting Actress: Who will win: Da’Vine Joy Randolph Who should win: Emily Blunt
Toss up for me. Both were really good but I found Blunt’s character a little more complex and interesting.
Adapted Screenplay: Who will win: Oppenheimer Who should win: Oppenheimer
Original Screenplay: Who will win: The Holdovers Who should win: Anatomy of a Fall
Visual Effects: Who will win: Godzilla Minus One Who should win: Godzilla Minus One
Cinematography: Who will win: Oppenheimer Who should win: Poor Things
Costume Design: Who will win: Barbie Who should win: Killers of the Flower Moon
Production Design: Who will win: Oppenheimer Who should win: Poor Things
Makeup & Hairstyling: Who will win: Poor Things Who should win: Poor Things
Sound: Who will win: Oppenheimer Who should win: Oppenheimer
Original Score: Who will win: Oppenheimer Who should win: Oppenheimer
Original Song: Who will win: “I’m Just Ken” Who should win: “What Was I Made For?”

Idk that I've ever had a strong opinion on this before but it feels kind of insane there aren't Oscars for dance choreography or action choreography/stunt work. I feel like if I made a movie that would be literally the hardest part. To some extent that goes to direction but clearly there are dedicated people in those fields working on movies and on some of the most important scenes as to why people like movies.

The Sags have had a best stunt ensemble award for 15 years and totally glaze over that during their broadcast every year for some reason. Theres been chatter about them adding a couple more oscars and one of them being for stunts. ( for now, casting is being introduced in 2026 ) They do have the technical awards which are given out this weekend but that doesnt even cover stunts, just filming innovations. Im surprised Tom Cruise hasnt been at the forefront of that cause he easily could have gotten a few trophies out of it himself by now.

Yeah, I've seen them discuss stunts getting included. Dancing just as well. The casting one they're introducing is kinda meh to me because acting already gets so much recognition, but big setpieces are such a thing that separates film from TV.
Anyone making a final vote on who wins between Stone and Gladstone? Feels like the only award that’s a real toss up.
I'm saying Gladstone, putting more stock in SAG as a predictor than BAFTAs. I think Adapted Screenplay is up for grabs as well, even Gerwig/Baumbach winning is within the realm of possibility IMO.
I'm pulling for Gladstone. But I think Emma will win. I think it was when Viola Davis was up for The Help she knew she wasn't going to win and she said it is because the Academy likes to reward big, transformstive performances rather than subdued ones.
