Godzilla Minus One was a great movie but you could see the seams a lot more than Guardians js.
I’m a moron when it comes to VFX, but everything I had seen online said The Creator’s effects were really revolutionary and made some big leaps. I haven’t seen Godzilla yet but have heard it’s also wonderful and deserving.
Marvel deserves to be nowhere near a VFX oscar at the moment.

That was the best thing I have ever seen on the Oscars. Slash was fucking SHREDDING. The song may not win the award, but that was the highlight of the show hands-down.
EDITED TO ADD: I am also buzzed on white wine, so forgive the hyperbole.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?

Its weird that it seemed they were going to go over because if the actor categories having the speeches in them for each actor but I guess they were fortunate that some speeches went really quick.

so truly just a great Oscars ceremony all around. we actually watched the whole thing last night live-ish. We started an hour late which gave us plenty of space to fast forward through all the commercials and still were done at 9:45pm CDT. so big fan of the early start time.
kimmell did fine. opening monologue ran a little long, some of the jokes were groaners in a bad way, but all things considered he is a steady hand that kept the show moving. of course after the mulaney field of dreams bit we are all ready for mulaney to have a shot at hosting. having said that one of the benefits of kimmell is it's not all about him, bring mulaney in and it would turn into a bit of the mulaney show, for better or worse.
i really liked the previous winners doing little speeches for the various actor categories. to me, awards shows are first and foremost about seeing famous people being all dressed up and hopefully charming, so this little bit gave us the opportunity to see more famous people being charming. nic cage was great.
the john cena nude bit was legit hilarious, not just "funny for an awards show" but just funny. emily blunt and ryan gosling's barbenheimer rivalry bit was also great. having arnold and devito out there was great. not all of the bits were successful but enough were.
in terms of the awards themselves i am disappointed Killers of the Flower Moon came away with nothing. I would have given it at least Best Production Design. I just watched Poor Things on Saturday so am fresh off of it, really enjoyed everything about it, but to me, i mean, it was just shot on volume right? it didn't try to shy away from it. and while there were some real sets it was pretty much just steampunk. all very cool, i love steampunk! but part of what wow'd me so much about KotFM was the set design. everything felt so real and contributed to the immersion of the movie as a whole, in a much more subtle way than the LOUD colors and energy of Poor Things.
Speaking of Poor Things, it was a great film, and being fresh off of it I wasn't totally shocked when Emma Stone won. I still would have given it to Lily, emma was great in the movie and quite deserving but Lily was better and emma is already hollywood royalty. having said that emma's speech was great, the bit she said about yorgos telling her to "take herself out of it" was some basic postjack real life guiding principle type shit so i liked that.
the "i'm just ken" performance was fantastic and it should have won best song over billie eilish whispering (all respect to billy and phinny they are lovely and talented people, i'm just an elder millenial and don't understand this whisper music thing, and also i think we are about to swing around in the other direction, it's time for music to get fuckin loud again, i don't know what form it's going to take but it's coming, it's gunna be awesome).
good with the inevitable running of the table of oppenheimer. film was great and popular and it was nolan's time.
anyway we had a great time watching the oscars last night!
That In Memorium was so poorly shot. I couldn’t see half the people they were honoring due to the cameras going wide for the dancers & singing.
oh for sure, this is a criticism i forgot in my post. really would prefer the full screen to be the in memoriam. i appreciate the artistry of the dancing but it was unnecessary and a little weird, the focus should be on those we lost this year.
